Summer 2011 Anime Opinions: Ikoku Meiro no Croisee, Kamisama no Memochou, Sacred Seven

I’m calling it – Kamisama is gonna be the anime to watch this season. The others can go back to the drawing board~

Ikoku Meiro no Croisee

Croissant tells the story of a Japanese girl as she comes to France and works in a signmaker’s shop. It’s a heartwarming tale with a gentle backdrop of rustic 19th-century France. The signmaker and the little Japanese girl will bond over the course of the anime and it will be great to see their friendship develop despite their cultural differences.

Okay, now you know what you’re getting into. Is this the kinda show I like? Not at all. But if you like slice-of-life, heartwarming shows, try this one out.

Kamisama no Memochou

If you don't watch this show, you'll break my chopsticks. And by chopsticks, I mean heart. :(
All right. I REALLY loved this show, so let me try to sell it to ya.

This is basically a cross between Gosick, Denpa Onna, and Denpa Teki na Kanojo. Do you know what those three are? Did you like them? If so, stop what you’re doing and download the show. Don’t worry, this post will still be here when you’re done.

If you don’t know what those three are, then here’s the gist:

The Generic Iconic Male Protagonist (hereafter referred to as “the gimp”) comes across an incident with a girl. Through this, he meets several interesting characters and ends up getting dragged into trying to solve the mystery of a missing high school girl.

There’s a tough-talking yakuza, a military nerd, a somewhat-buff dropout, a gigolo, and a NEET detective… The characters are all so interesting and the way they interact is truly a sight to behold. The gimp plays the necessary straight man in all this madness and the resulting concoction is quite delicious.

The show isn’t cookie-cutter and it’s definitely not sugar-coated. There are many directions it could go, but it seems confidently pointed in the right ones. I recommend giving it a shot (watch the whole episode – it’s 45 minutes for episode 1). If it’s not for you, move along. If it is, you’re quite welcome.

Sacred Seven

This show desperately wants to be like Code Geass. The character designs are great, but everyone else is meh. Basic gist is that a brooding dude has secret special powers and he ends up fighting for some organization that is dedicated to stopping evil or someshit like that. Basic, boring, been-there plot. The characters are unlikable and there’s nothing to hook you and make you want to continue watching. You’ve probably seen this before. For those newer to shows like this, go with something like Code Geass, Macross Frontier, or Gundam 00 instead.

There haven’t been many good shows to hang onto in this genre recently. Unfortunately, Sacred Seven continues this trend. Pretty disappointing.

Discuss.

  1. Sacred Seven interests me most. I watched Code Geass but didn’t enjoy it. What other animes fall under this genre and succeed?

    • Taste all depends on the person. Don’t let me be the one to stop you from experiencing a show. Watch it, and if you like it, great. If not, there are always more out there.

If it’s mecha, the three I mentioned are widely considered to be good.

But if it’s something like shounen, which is a direction this might go, I can’t think of anything better than Soul Eater. I’m assuming you’re already familiar with Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto?

Of course, depending on what attracts you to the show in the first place, I might have some better recommendations for you.

  3. Hidan no Aria & Yumekui Merry had teached me not to trust JC Staff, especially when they’re doing light novel adaptation. Let’s see how many episodes it takes before KamiMemo going to suck.
