No, I’m not dead (yet).

Not dead, but no sleep makes the eyes bleed

Basically, I just wanted to let you all know that I do intend to finish off this season’s reviews. The reason why I haven’t been posting very much recently is because my job is extremely time-consuming. More than any job should be. However, I can still finish off this season’s reviews.

So let’s just break this down.

Breaking it down like a mothafucka, yo!

Groups I need to review:

Bakuman S2: SFW-sage, TMD_A-Destiny

Ben-to: Shikkaku, EveTaku

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai: Doki

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai OVA: Complete!

Busou Shinki: Complete!

C3: Cubed x Cursed x Curious: Gimme, UTW

Chibi Devi: Complete!

Chihayafuru: Commie, NyanTaku

Digimon Xross Wars II: WildBunch, OD ((This anime = lowest fucking priority))

Fate/Zero: Hatsuyuki

Guilty Crown: Commie

Gundam AGE: Sage

HunterXHunter: SG, SD&Taka

Kimi to Boku: Sage, CTSS

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon: Hatena

Last Exile S2: N/A. Whine is doing this in a joint with SFW, so there’d be a serious conflict of interest here.

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai: Hiryuu

Maken-ki: Hiryuu, Hatsuyuki

Mashiro-Iro Symphony: Doki-Chihiro, Zenyaku-ACIFT

Mirai Nikki: SS, GotWoot, IB

Morita-san wa Mukuchi II: Shin-gx, Ruri

Persona 4: Ruri, Commie, Hatsuyuki-CTSS

Phi-Brain – Kami no Puzzle: Complete!

Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi S2: Sekai, Sage

Shakugan no Shana S3: Complete!

Shinryaku! Ika Musume: Underwater, AQUA, WhyNot, FFFpeeps

Tamayura ~hitotose~: Oyatsu, Nishi-taku

Un-Go: Commie, Doki

Working’!!: Complete!

So few groups. Lucky me.

Note that if your group is “Liquid Subs”, “SubDesu”, or “Hadena”, you don’t so much count as a fansub as “shit transmitted electronically”. So I’m going to exercise my best judgment and put a hold on any future reviews for these groups until actual fansub groups get a fair shake at getting reviewed. Also, if your group is horribly delayed, no review. Try harder to not be so shit.

For the order of reviews… I am going to prioritize shows which only need one more group to be “completely reviewed” first. After this, I’m going to look at shows which have only 13 episodes this season. Then, it’s by whatever the hell I consider “quality” shows to be.

Sorry for being so bad with getting reviews out on-time. Due to my job, I don’t have a choice in that matter, but things should ease up in the future. Also… Thanksgiving = reviewing. Black Friday = Amazon + reviewing. Thanksgiving weekend = reviewing. Let’s see how much that knocks out. Do expect some delays, because I try to review the more recent releases by groups. This means I’m going to need to catch up on a lot of this season, as well as some much needed sleep…

Sleepy sage :(

~Other Updates~

The review queue is gone temporarily while I work out some kinks with it (read: I didn’t do much with it, so I’m putting it on hiatus for now).

The Review Summary page has also been updated for this season. Recommended groups, lists of groups that need reviews, and group status changes (such as dropping shows) are now (for the most part) properly reflected on the summary page.

To be released tomorrow: Last Exile, sugoi secret OVA, Dantalian batch (Edit: This didn’t happen. I’m working on Valve time.)

Sounds like there won’t be many Fs in the near future.

  2. One thing that you should try is to mark which groups actually copy subs from official source. Although This would be an extremely time-consuming task (and one episode can’t guarantee everything).

    • Time-consuming? Eh, not so much more than anything else I do. I have to see if groups are just re-encode groups that don’t do anything with the scripts before I review anyway.

And yeah, good idea. That’s in the pipeline for next season’s reviews along with karaoke samples (so I don’t have to do a shitty job of describing them and you can see for yourself if you like it or not), linking back to groups’ sites, as well as slightly more conversation on timing/encoding. Nothing major, but improvements nonetheless.

The way I score groups needs fixing as well (I’ll be taking some direction from eighthsin’s blog for this. More info later).

      • I think you can concentrate on what you’re good at, which is Edit/QC. Some people take this as serious business.

        The rest, I don’t think it’s a good idea.

Translation is hard to judge. Since there are religious issues in liberal-literal translation issues. Also, you will find something on most group’s release. Everyone makes mistakes. Are those careless mistakes or just suck? I won’t dare to critic translators to get my ass fucked.

The rest aren’t important. No one cares about timing unless they have mistimed line. Encoding is very tricky and it’s not something that can be determined easily. And quality is usually very related to ts access.

        • I don’t think it’s impossible to judge a translation even if you don’t know Japanese.

Put it this way: On one hand, there’s translation style, which everyone has an opinion on and which you can argue till the cows come home. On the other hand, there’s translation accuracy, the finer points of which you can’t judge unless you’re a translator yourself.

On the third hand (because everyone has three hands, right?) there’s that which a reviewer like D_S CAN judge, and it’s pretty straightforward: as a viewer, how effective was the translation to you? After all, the point of a translation is to effectively get the message across to the viewer. Who better to judge than an actual viewer? In fact, it might be BETTER because a translator will mentally fill in gaps in the translation and might not notice some mistakes.

Also, even someone who doesn’t know Japanese can pick up on some mistranslations with experience. For one thing, if the script as a whole makes no sense and you can’t understand the episode, that’s a good sign the TL didn’t do a good job. With experience, though, you can pick up on subtler translation mistakes solely based on the English. I’ve had the experience while TLCing of noticing a mistake not because the audio tipped me off, but because when reading the translation draft, a line sounded strange enough to make me double-check it.

Did I miss a memo where speed now equates to quality? Of course we would all prefer that our group of choice for a given show maintains a fairly prompt release schedule, but when did trying to keep up with weekly speedsubs—in some capacity—become mandatory for “quality” fagsubbin’?

      Reply
      • I’m not talking days behind. I’m talking weeks behind.

It’s indicative of poor leadership and yes, it does speak volumes when a group can’t manage to get a single episode done in three weeks. I’ve been subbing for a while and the common argument — “Oh, they spend their time fixing the subs to make them sugoi and perfect.” — is absolutely bullshit. I know fansubbers. That’s not how shit works.

Though I do prefer quality over speed, it’s ridiculous to assume viewers will wait months for your version when the differences in quality aren’t as pronounced as “watchable vs. unwatchable”.

Unfortunately, I don’t have enough time to play games with groups which are only “stalled”. Getting two episodes of a series out and expecting to be taken as seriously as a group which managed seven in the same timeframe isn’t going to fly when each review takes me two hours and I have maybe the same amount of free time every day after work.

        • Well said, dark_sage.

I was going to reply to null with simply this:

Taking a long ass time with a release will render it obsolete. Especially with other sub groups in play.

In any field where you can get scooped, efficiency (quality + speed) matters.

        • Ah, my mistake here. I was taking the “Try harder not to be so shit.” line out of context. So yeah, I’ll definitely concede that, in the case of reviewing releases of currently airing shows, and currently airing shows in general, it just wouldn’t make sense to include the lolslow groups.

People that intend to fiddle around and procrastinate/stall for weeks at a time probably ought not be working on a TV-sourced raw, when DVD/BD releases are clearly a better place for wasting untold hours fucking around with trivial details that virtually no one will notice anyhow. (see: OCD/compulsive nitpicking simply for the sake of self-gratification.)

  3. Keep it up D_S, I for one love your reviews and you have my full support for this. It’s hard to find quality subs in these days and you’re the best filter that anyone could possibly find to filter out the bad subs from good subs.

Thanks for all the hard work

  4. I’m waiting so much for your review on Bakuman. I realized that TMD_A-destiny subs isn’t good but they have the 480p.
