Review

Karaoke.

Opening. Good gods, why would you do this to me? WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!

Rating: Terrible.

Insert 1. Not great, but it warms my heart to see Commie put more effort into the karaoke than Doki did.

Insert 2. Fucking cute. Nice insert.

Ending. Well, it could be worse. It could have the OP’s font. Though it’s not good, and was probably slapped together randomly, Commie could have done worse.

Rating: Okay.

Typesetting.

The perfect amount of blur. This is why they call herkz herkz. Actually, I don’t know why they call herkz herkz, nor do I know if this is the proper amount of blur to apply. However, it looks nice and that’s all I care about.

I wasn’t expecting this to be typeset. But thanks for doing it.

I did like all the typesetting.

Other.

That’s kawaii. The text expands even though her voice doesn’t. Commie (herkz?) seems to have their fun with text. But for every time it adds something to the show, there’s another where it doesn’t. Guess which one this is.

Fades are always a nice touch.

Script Quality

Karaoke.

What in the what? Am I reading English?

Main Script.

A what little longer?

Switch the “a” and “just” around.

Why is there a comma here?

When it’s better to turn the subs off, you know you’ve fucked up.

Oh, herkz’s, you shouldn’t have told me’s you edited cuz now I’m gonna make fun of you’s and you’ll’s feel bad.

Sort of how I felt when you and Xythar got me to fire myself from my own group. ;_;

Her… high school days? So why not just make it “High school is almost over.” ?

No student would say “yes” to “Next week a new student will be joining.” Something like “Okay.” would be much better suited to this situation.

What the fuck is this gibberish? This line is fucking terrible and it comes after one of the major emotional climaxes of the episode. Fuck this.

This line is two syllables in Japanese. Much too long in English.

“What do you mean?” should be fine. “What?” could also work, but I’d rather have more words here than fewer.

Why are question marks so difficult to understand? Do you need me to offer a question mark bootcamp for your editors? Jesus fucking fuck.

Good

The highs here weren’t as good as the ones I pointed out in Doki’s script. While I did enjoy CR’s script as handled by Commie, I do feel that it missed many opportunities to stand out like Doki’s did. Even
with Doki’s translation issues, I feel that I had a more “fun” experience with their subs.

This script was much more subtle with its excellence, and while that led to me appreciating the wit of the translator, I couldn’t help but feel that Doki handled a number of the lines in a better manner.

These are some playful translations. I like how both of these examples had two screens linked together by specific phrasing. While the second one was obviously related, the first was not, and this kind of cleverness in a script is a real treat for those who are looking for such things.

I didn’t pay much thought to this line at first, but “whoa” is the correct line to say to a horse. Good job for getting it correct here.

Haters gonna hate, but this conveyed the tone of what she was going for here quite well. “forever alone” isn’t a phrase relegated to 4chan, my sun-starved friends, and the way it’s used here is legitimate.

Great line to use here.

This is the one standout line of the entire release. One isn’t really all that impressive for a translation with the clever lines listed above.

Results

Watchability: Watchable.

Visual grade: B-

Script grade: B-

Overall grade: B-

For whatever reason (TL laziness/switch or gradual apathy on my part), the script began to fail impressing me after the first five minutes. It just didn’t have any of the oomph that a well placed idiom or clever joke could deliver. You can bitch about Doki’s translation errors, but I did have more fun watching their release than Commie’s and that also counts for something.

Assuming Doki gets a TLC on their release, I’d recommend theirs wholeheartedly over Commie’s. For now, it can only be a half-hearted recommendation.

We’ll see what [Sopranos] did with CR’s script when I get around to reviewing theirs.

  1. I didn’t get the joke about child-boyfriend in Doki release, because they didn’t translated previous line as “Do you have a boyfriend?” Well, maybe it’s just me.

    • No, they didn’t catch the joke but I didn’t feel the joke in CR’s script was of enough importance or witty enough to consider something that I felt Doki should have been called out on.

Doki also seems to have translated “math homework” as “flyers” which while a very stupid mistake, doesn’t actually bear MUCH relevance on the script.

Doki’s translation incompetence does mean that if a group manages a B or better I’m going to instantly recommend theirs, because I have trouble rationalizing a recommendation for a group that can’t handle basic shit like in this show. I figured I’d leave these complaints for my final thoughts in a release that managed that score.

  2. What about the other signs? I recall doing more than 5 signs this episode. They may not have been very important but I did take the time to typeset as much as I could.

    • I didn’t notice them while watching yours or Doki’s release, which isn’t a terribly great sign for their relevance. But I went back in and added those signs to the review because you asked politely and effort deserves to be displayed.

  3. I personally hate memes with a passion, but loved the forever alone line. Fit perfectly in that situation. I watched the CR rip as soon as it came out, and aside from the “overwrote the shame” line, I didn’t really care about any of the other errors; I thought it was great. I’d consider Doki, but I’m wary of translation problems and I’m usually fine with CR. I’d honestly rather watch the CR rip and get it a few hours earlier though, as this seems like they didn’t even change the CR script at all. Though, I admit, it is nice to have karaoke.

  4. Hm, you should probably mention on the blackboard sign that they got the teacher’s name wrong (well, looking at HorribleSubs, it looks like CR got it wrong too). It should be Takahashi, not Takai.

    • It’s pretty good. Best show, I dunno, but I can see it easily being in the top ten for 2012 if they keep it going strong.
