Sorry for the slowness.

Note: Heard there was only one person on the script, so I’m gonna basically address them. It will read a bit differently and that’s the reason.

Visual Review

Karaoke.

Ending. Only the ED aired for this episode.

Typesetting.

Subbed version (top) versus hardsubbed version. There’s no real issue with covering up the Japanese version’s English; it actually makes it look better. Reasonable choice.

Other.

Good old PSN rips.

Script Review

Visuals.

Take that space before C and put it after the r. Basic readability shouldn’t be so hard to manage; I’m sure you guys can handle this in the future.

“I’m thinking of you with more than a hundred words.”

See that fix? Easier than raping babies.

Main Script.

This reads like St. Petersburg is located in Narva. No.

“They’ve surrounded the unit in Narva, a city southwest of St. Petersburg.”

This isn’t a thing. If we are to assume gg is capable of making up new words, it still doesn’t work. The only thing green humanism could mean is humanism with an environmental bent, which makes no fucking sense when applied to this scene… or any scenes in the show, really.

Reads like shit. S’okay, though. Darkie Sage is here to help.

“It’s always this “seppuku” and “kamikaze” garbage from these Elevens. The only reason they live is to die!”

I guess I have heard “failing our responsibilities”, but when that’s immediately preceded by “fails”, the poor word choice becomes an issue.

we will be failing our responsibilities -> our mission will be unsuccessful

is more to the point.

Bit off there.

“We will taste both the anger and blame of the people, Headquarters, and the government. Are you ready to accept that?”

This works in a roundabout way, but it’s best to fly as the crow does.

“Politicians will never implicate themselves in failure.”

Why the fuck is there a comma here? It should be excised along with the TL’s brain.

An ever-serious military general who is insistent on keeping a professional relationship with New CC despite his personal feelings is not going to revert to slang for one line in the entire script.

Inconsistent, distracting tone and phrasing… This was such a shit translation it could only be considered a troll.

gg apologists (sychophants, really) maintain that intentional failure should be seen a success. But I’m afraid I don’t prescribe to that school of almost-thought. Failure is nothing but.

How hard is this to fuck up? TL confirmed for having the skills of a painting.

Title could be italicized or underlined. Emphasis on could be, because nobody really fucking cares.

You don’t talk about someone in the third person when you’re fucking talking to them directly. This ain’t a goddamn monologue.

“So even you have a sense of humor.” See what I did there? It’s called using first-grade English. Super fucking difficult, I know.

I actually dig this. You get the oniichan shit outta the way in a minimally awkward fashion. There’s an argument to be made for capitalizing “brother” in both instances, but depending on writer intent, it could go either way.

“This uniform is my best outfit.”

This word is as Frénch as Green Eyes’s smirk. Get it right.

“She’s also my fiancée.”

Capitalized because Banzai Japan? Come on, I thought we were over this stupid practice. This ain’t a fucking proper noun.

Like… with money? Pretty fucking sure that’s not it.

“Ryou Sayama, as youngsters you still have to pay respect to your elders.”

worth, you worthless shit.

I guess they deserve credit for having only one misspelling in the release.

Watchability: Watchable.

Visual quality: Beyond the shitty raw, there was nothing terribly wrong with gg’s visuals here.

Script grade: B-

Overall grade: B-

I was told this was translated by the gent behind gg’s Binbougami and released unedited. Makes sense because it does need a bit of tender loving, but as-is, not too bad.

An acceptable release overall.

    • Curiously, I’m pretty sure the word was (or is at least cognate to) the original version before the word was bastardised.

Also, no-one refers to their siblings as ‘Brother Daniel’. You either go full wap with ‘nii-san’ or whatever word they used in the audio, or localise it to a Western standard and just say ‘Daniel’. Apart from it being completely alien to natural speech, that particular address is used in reference to priests, so it’s wrong on many levels.

        • Perhaps it does fit better when viewed more contextually, but it still sounds quite stilted to my ears. ‘Dear brother’ definitely is usable in some contexts, but I can’t imagine siblings addressing each other as such in anything but highly formal speech. I would still oppose ‘dear brother Daniel’, given it just doesn’t sound like anything I’ve ever heard, but ‘my dear brother, Daniel’ or ‘Daniel, my dear brother’ sounds alright.

          • It’s a very formal setting. They’re at a ball filled with wealthy, wealthy people and her family is counted among their numbers. Their relationship is also a bit strained, so I interpreted it with an almost bitter taste. Outside of this context it would likely prove too stiff to work, but here I felt it was an interesting way to phrase it that didn’t set off any red flags.

            Edit: She’s also adopted.

  1. >Take that space before C and put it after the r. Basic readability shouldn’t be so hard to manage; I’m sure you guys can handle this in the future.

There is one space after the comma and one space after the word “Commander.” Sorry you’re autistic.

    >This isn’t a thing. If we are to assume gg is capable of making up new words, it still doesn’t work. The only thing green humanism could mean is humanism with an environmental bent, which makes no fucking sense when applied to this scene… or any scenes in the show, really.

“Green” also means new, newbie, etc., you retard.

    >Reads like shit. S’okay, though. Darkie Sage is here to help.
    >“It’s always this “seppuku” and “kamikaze” garbage from these Elevens. The only reason they live is to die!”

“It’s always this?” Are you kidding me? Missing a verb there? “The only reason they live is to die” would be inaccurate. The punchline is that they’re descendants of a race that loves to die. That’s literal.

    >”failing our responsibilities”
    literal

    >“We will taste both the anger and blame of the people, Headquarters, and the government. Are you ready to accept that?”

This misses the original emphasis of receiving blame _on top of_ receiving anger.

    >“Politicians will never implicate themselves in failure.”
Wordy and clunky. Check the length of the Japanese line, it’s a one-liner.

    >Why the fuck is there a comma here? It should be excised along with the TL’s brain.

Do you even listen to the audio? Did you miss that obvious fucking pause in his speech? Oh I forgot, you don’t even into Japanese anyway.

    >An ever-serious military general who is insistent on keeping a professional relationship with New CC despite his personal feelings is not going to revert to slang for one line in the entire script.

Not understanding social interactions and cues is a telltale sign of autism, you know. The word “mattaku” would never be used like that in a professional setting. He’s clearly trying to be more casual than she is.

    >How hard is this to fuck up? TL confirmed for having the skills of a painting.
    Wat

    >You don’t talk about someone in the third person when you’re fucking talking to them directly. This ain’t a goddamn monologue.

It’s called sarcasm, ever hear of it? “Oh even the great Dark Sage is an autist.” Yeah, I’d say that to your face.

    >Capitalized because Banzai Japan? Come on, I thought we were over this stupid practice. This ain’t a fucking proper noun.
    It is.

    >Like… with money? Pretty fucking sure that’s not it.
“Ryou Sayama, as youngsters you still have to pay respect to your elders.”

He uses the literal word for “pay,” as in paying money. Japanese doesn’t use the word “pay” with the word respect like English does. He’s talking about literal payment of penalities, debts. “Pretty fucking sure?” Guess you weren’t sure enough.

    >worth, you worthless shit.
Colloquial and fits the character better. He doesn’t need to use complete, full sentences for you to know what he’s talking about.

So basically all this “review” does is confirm that DS truly doesn’t know Japanese.

    • I’m sure you know Japanese, Light-chan, but you still have a bit to go when it comes to the English language. I’ll have to respond to this in full when I get back to my hotel room, but thanks in advance for the entertainment.

    • All right, let’s play.

      1. I am quite aware you used spaces there when you wrote it. My issue was that you clearly didn’t look at how the line looks in action. Here, let me illustrate the difference for you with pixel counts.

      http://crymore.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/you_are_blind1.jpg

Can you see the disrepancy now? If you can’t read numbers, I guess you’re completely beyond salvation.

      2. I gave you credit in that I assumed you were trying to use the term from an environmentalist standpoint because it almost sounds accurate. But you actually meant “newbie humanism”? Good gods, I’m surprised you didn’t fuck up this release more. Was this script written at a sixth-grade level in Japanese or something?

If you meant “new humanism”, you used a bad fucking term. Assuming you wanted to be clever, “nouveau humanism” would work, but “modern humanism”, or “naive humanism” (can be read two different ways that would fit here, which isn’t a bad option) would also work. “green humanism” does nothing but cloud the intent of the line with a layer of shit phrasing.
      _
      3. If you want to translate your script literally, that’s fine. I know gg’s standards are low, so I guess that’s acceptable from a translation standpoint for them. I suggested a line that a human might speak, but if you’re so determined to resist the temptation of the English language, that’s your prerogative.

But realize that whining about how your subs are great because you did a 1:1 dictionary translation on them isn’t the fast track to success, regardless of how much your cosubbers suck you off for even bothering to attempt a translation.

And if you’ve really never heard the phrase “It’s always this” before, I think you need to spend a bit more time off the boat before deciding you can competently translate a show.
      _
      4. I’m not questioning the accuracy of your translation; I’m saying your translation is shit. If you seriously don’t understand why nobody wants a Google Translation for their subs, then you need to pull your head out of your own ass and find a better way to figure your shit out.

But I guess we were all newfag subbers at one point. If you seriously don’t fucking get it, I can explain it to you here or on IRC. It’s kind of an important concept to get.
      _
      5. Well, let’s see how that looks. “We will taste the anger of the people, Headquarters, and the government, as well as all their blame.” It reads worse and there’s no significant difference between the lines. Why are you so dick hard about this? The order is mostly irrelevant to the meaning, so there’s no point in pushing the difference.
      _
      6. 6 words is wordy? What, did your high school curriculum consist solely of The Very Hungry Caterpillar?
      _
      7. Commas are not used for nongrammatical pauses, dipshit. That’s why we have ellipses. You are seriously so fucking stupid it’s pathetic. Why the hell did you pick an argument with me when you don’t even know the basics of the English language? You don’t get a participation award on this site, so don’t even try if you’re just gonna fuck everything up.
      _
      8. I don’t have a very good Japspeak vocab, but I am pretty good at context and tone. Here, “mattaku” would work just as fine as one of a handful of words/phrases. “My, my…” or “Well…”, for example.

Why doesn’t “Man…” work? Because of the slang component; it’s extremely informal to the point of reading awkwardly there. If you didn’t realize this, perhaps you should spend more time around humans.
      _
      9. A painting itself can’t be skilled. That word doesn’t apply. You can say the artist who painted it was skilled, but the painting can’t carry that adjective.
      _
      10. Do you even understand English, at all? Read my fucking criticism again; you aren’t even addressing my complaint.
      _
      11. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aikido

It follows the same rules as all other martial arts do. Take “karate”, for example. Don’t fucking capitalize it.
      _
      12. I’m sorry. I offered my correction under the assumption your translation was somewhat close to being accurate. Guess I was wrong.

You were trying to say something like “You youngsters should know that you always have to pay back your debts to your elders.” then? If not, your English is further gone than I thought.
      _
      13. It’s not colloquial; you’re literally just cutting the sentence short and playing it off as slang. Goddamn you are dumb.
      _
No wonder there wasn’t an editor on this release. I doubt anyone would have the patience to work with someone as mired in ignorance as you. You didn’t raise one valid goddamn point and have only succeeded at embarrassing yourself.

Pathetic, but thanks for the entertainment. Read my post, learn from it, then come back when you can pass a basic literacy test.
