Translation Party House Rules:

1. Translation Parties are intended to help you make the best subtitle choice for a given anime. Choose which line(s) you liked best by selecting them with the checkbox.

2. If you didn’t like any of the lines, choose the last option — it corresponds to a “N/A” choice.

3. A “>” indicates that another character has begun speaking. If there are three characters in a line comparison, I will indicate the third with a “>>” and so on for more characters.

4. Group order is randomized for each screenshot, every time you refresh the page. The only option that is static is the “N/A” choice, which will always be at the bottom.

5. Your results will be summed up when you click the “Get your results” button.

6. Party hard.

qIIq :: {\i1}Was it the correct decision to not let her fall?
{\i1}No, that was probably a mistake.
{\i1}Why was it a mistake?
{\i1}That was because her body was really,
{\i1}even absurdly, light.
{\i1}That girl, Senjougahara;
{\i1}it was like she didn’t have any weight at all.

Koharubi :: I was right in not avoiding her… wasn’t I?
No, maybe it was a mistake.
Because her body was extremely, and unreasonably, light.
That’s right. For her, Senjougahara,
the thing called weight… did not exist.

gg :: Not ignoring her was the right decision… I think.
No, maybe I’m wrong.
Why, you ask?
Her body is extremely…
Absurdly light…
Correct, you could say that Senjougahara has no such thing as mass.

Aniplex :: {\i1}A better decision than dodging,
{\i1}wasn’t it?
{\i1}No, actually, that might have been a mistake.
{\i1}Because,
{\i1}her body was very… tremendously light.
{\i1}That’s right.
{\i1}This girl, Senjyogahara,
{\i1}had almost no weight, or anything that could be called weight, to speak of.

qIIq :: Well, you know, Senjougahara Hitagi is kind of a strange name; isn’t it amusing?
>Senjougahara is a famous surname.
Oh, um, it’s not that,
what I’m saying is more like, her given name…
>Isn’t Senjougahara’s given name Hitagi?
>Is it really that strange?
>”Hitagi” is construction workers’ slang, isn’t it?

Koharubi :: Besides, don’t you agree that the name {\i1}Senjougahara Hitagi{\i0} is very strange and fascinating?
>Senjougahara… that surname comes from the name of a place.
No, not that.
Rather, I meant her other name…
>Senjougahara’s given name is… Hitagi, correct?
>Is there anything as strange as that?
>”Hitagi” sounds like civil engineering jargon.

gg :: Don’t you think “Senjougahara Hitagi” is a weird and interesting name?
>Senjougahara is a place name.
No, that’s not what I meant…
I’m talking about her first name.
>Senjougahara-san’s first name is Hitagi…
>What’s so weird about that?
>If I recall correctly, “Hitagi” is some civil engineering term.

Aniplex :: Well… and besides,
don’t you think Hitagi Senjyogahara is an unusual and fascinating name?
>Senjyogahara is a geographical name.
Uh… um… That’s not what I meant.
I’m talking about, uh, her first name, you see.

qIIq :: Though I shouldn’t be saying this,
Senjougahara…
>What?
The way she is now,
is much prettier than her former self.
Her existence is
really ephemeral.
>{\i1}Ephemeral existence, huh.

Koharubi :: Maybe it’s inappropriate to say this, but Senjougahara-san…
>What?
…looks more beautiful now than she did in the past.
A fragile existence.
>”A fragile existence”?

gg :: Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but….

qIIq :: Don’t move.
Ah, that’s incorrect.
It’s more like “it’s alright to move, though it’s really dangerous”.
Curiosity is a cockroach-like thing.
Just because it’s a secret you don’t want to share, people gather and crawl on it.
It bothers me so much, I can’t stand it.

Koharubi :: Don’t move.
Ah, I said that wrong.
You’re free to move, but doing so will be very dangerous.
That’s what I meant to say.
Curiosity… such a thing can be compared to cockroaches.
It swarms around the secrets that one doesn’t want others to know.
It’s truly frustrating.

gg :: Don’t move.
Oh, my bad.
I mean, you can move if you want, but it’d be very dangerous.
Curiosity is like a cockroach.
It likes to stumble upon secrets that’re supposed to stay hidden.
It’s pretty damn annoying.

Aniplex :: Don’t move.
Oh, my mistake.
“You can move, but it will be very dangerous,” is what I really should have said.

Talking about crabs, based on location, there were mind crabs, heavy crabs, heavy stone crabs,
and even heavy gods.
The thing is, crabs and gods are connected.

Koharubi :: Omoshi Kani. {\an8}Note: Weight Crab.
>Omoshi Kani?
Yes, it’s a myth from the mountains in the Kyushu region.
According to different areas, Omoshi Kani is also known as Omoishi Kani or Omoshi Gani. {\an8}Note: Heavy Stone God or Emotion God.
Furthermore, Omoishi Kami is another way of saying it.
It’s a pun on kani and kami, which are crab and god.

gg :: Heavy crab.
>Heavy crab?
Yeah, it’s folklore from the mountains of Kyushu.
Depending on the location, its name varies from weighty crab to heavy stone crab.
Or even heavy stone god. That means crabs and gods are connected.

Aniplex :: Weight Crab…
>Weight… Crab?
It’s a myth that originated near the mountains of Kyushu, south Japan.
Depending on the region, it’s known as either a Weight Crab,
or a Mind Crab, a Heavy Stone Crab, or else a Heavy Stone God.
There’s a play on the words “crab (kani)” and “god (kami),” you see.

You didn’t become like this because of someone’s fault. It’s just that your point of view changed.

I’m telling you that I can’t stand victimized faces, little missy.

Koharubi :: Don’t be mistaken, miss.
You didn’t become like this as a result of something.
It’s only that the perspective changed a bit.
Perspective?
>What are you trying to say?
I’m saying that your “oh, so pitiful” look makes me unhappy, miss.

You didn’t become like this because of whatever.
It’s just that your point of view changed.
>My point of view? What are you trying to say?
I’m saying I can’t stand you acting all victimized, young lady.

It’s just that your perspective shifted a bit.

    • They had some pretty good lines. When I was coming up with what to include in the TL Party, I assumed I’d be picking out their lines the most, though it looks like I assumed incorrectly.

    Interestingly enough, it was pretty easy to tell which lines were from gg and which were from Aniplex. As a whole, I liked Aniplex’ subs, but they kept making dumb decisions, which made me favor gg. The other two groups were pretty bad.

  3. qIIq 5 times, Koharubi 1 time, gg 8 times, Aniplex 5 times. I’m actually kinda surprised – I’d always been under the impression that qIIq had the most awkward script, so I was surprised they came up so much in the end. Also, my apologies.

    And N/A 5 times.

    Kinda expected. Considering how easy it was to pick out Aniplex and gg most of the time, the anonymization and randomization may not have had the desired effect, but oh well.

    A depressing amount came down to choices between meh and bad, and there were a few where I liked half of one and the other half of the other. :\

    I’ll admit, after doing the first three scenes I skipped over the first two lines for the rest, knowing that they’ll be retarded in some way.

    Reply
    • Are you retarded in some way? Each entry is randomized, just like any good multiple choice test’s answer key. So I’m not sure what you accomplished, except clarifying for the whole internet the invalidity of your opinions…

  6. …After giving a quick look to the options, I’ve realized that I don’t want to watch this show.

    The quality of the translations isn’t the matter here. The dialog is horrendous. Is that how they talk during the entire show? Part of me wishes this is a very-well orchestrated massive trollsub.

      • Regarding “tsundra”, what’s your issue? The portmanteau melds the ‘tsun’ (implication: cold, harsh, unforgiving, hard) fron tsundere with tundra, (permafrosted soil) creating an imaginary character type ‘tsundra’ with absolutely no soft or sweet side. additionally, Araragi clearly SAYS ‘tsundra’, not tundra, further supporting the subbers choice. Especially considering the penchant for dialogue and wordplay in this series, I don’t understand the issue you have here.

        Reply
        • You can’t really say “tu” in Japanese. In fact, the “tsu” sound is romanised as “tu” in Nihon-shiki and if you enter “tu” into any IME you will get the “tsu” character. Also, http://jisho.org/words?jap=tsundora&eng=&dict=edict

          It’s not a portmanteau, it’s just the way they write tundra.

          That being said I still chose the one with “tsundra” because I hated the dialogue flow in the other three a lot more.

          Reply
          • Portmanteau was the wrong word, it has a specific definition with this doesn’t really fit, in the sense that no real combination of separate words is ACTUALLY happening, as you showed with tsu/tu. I am familiar enough with the language to know how Japanese say tundra (but thanks for the info and link regardless, it’s appreciated).
            What I was trying to convey was the reason why I wouldn’t judge the subs negatively just for tsundra, and why it actually has positive connotations for meaning.
            That all aside, I agree with you the editing is best in that one whether it uses tundra or tsundra or tsundora lol.

            Reply
          • I do have a legit question about the language though, if you’ll bear with me. If you say tsu is romanized to tu, are you just referring to specific instances & not a general rule? Some examples would help me understand. Because obviously we don’t romanize the japanese characters for Tsukuba (race circuit) and to Tukuba (or Sukuba, which is how we pronounce it). Are these different written applications of the same phoneme? (kanji/kata versions, kun/onyomi pronunciation, and other finer elements are beyond my current level of skill, TBH) Am I even making sense (I should be in bed hours ago)? Thanks!

            Reply
            • You can write つくば as either “tsukuba” (Hepburn style) or “tukuba” (Nihon-shiki style). English speakers normally use Hepburn style, which is most likely why it’s the style you’re most familiar with. There are many people who use Nihon-shiki however, particularly many native Japanese speakers who would write it as “tukuba” and be valid in doing so. You’ll see a lot of it in places like Japanese website URLs in particular.

              Reply
            • Nihon-shiki will always use “tu” and never use “tsu”.
              Kunrei-shiki (de jure standard in Japan; based on Nihon-shiki) will usually use “tu” and sometimes use “tsu” when there’s a historic precedent.
              Hepburn (de facto standard in English speaking countries and some Japanese government organizations) will use “tsu” usually and “tu” for katakana “トゥ”.

              ISO allows Nihon-shiki and Kunrei-shiki.
              ANSI allows all three.

              Schools often teach Hepburn when they have a focus on using the language and Nihon-/Kunrei-shiki when they have a linguistic focus.

              Reply
              • Many thanks to you both for the valuable insights. You are correct, Hepburn is the romanization style with which I am familiar.

    • The entire point of the show is the over-the-top dialogue. It’s basically a lot of face shots and camera pans as the characters talk. Not a lot of action.

    Near toss-up between gg and Aniplex. Didn’t like three sets from anyone, but that could’ve been the original script too.

    I suspected some of the lines I was picking were from gg, since they seemed more their style, but I misattributed some Aniplex to gg as well.

        Very bizarre conclusion indeed… I listened to the episode raw and compared the 4 choices with the highest priorities being translation accuracy, readability and grammatical correctness, followed by flow, characterization and context. Aniplex seemed to be consistently the best (or at least the one that sucked the least…).

    I wanted to like Aniplex, but they kept making weird choices, or seemingly missing out on the sub-text. gg has the best mix of actually sounding human and not missing detail in my opinion.
