This is like when you pass out at a party and wake up with your friend’s dad’s head in between your legs. Time to relive middle school.

<+Akatsukin> I feel like the translation party would be better if we picked which ones suck rather than which ones we like

Your name reminds me of Tokyo Akazukin, Akatsukin. In her honor, I have decided to write this post.

Let's roll~
Let’s roll~

Translation After-the-Party House Guidelines:

0. If you didn’t attend the translation party, you aren’t invited to this one, you line-skipping bastard. Pay your dues.

1. Translation After-the-Parties are intended to help you make the best subtitle choice for a given anime assuming you are under the influence of retardation. Choose which lines you think are terrible. If you don’t know how to select them without me telling you exactly how to do it, you’re way too fucking stupid for this site and life in general. End yourself.

2. If you like all of the lines for a given screenshot, you probably don’t deserve to live, but you can choose the “N/A” option.

3. A “>” indicates that another character has begun speaking. If there are three characters in a line comparison, I will indicate the third with a “>>” and so on for more characters.

4. Group order is randomized for each screenshot, every time you refresh the page. The only option that is static is the “N/A” choice, which will always be at the bottom.

5. Your results will be summed up when you click the “Get your results” button.

6. Clean that vomit and glitter out of your hair; you look like a fucking mess.

Aniplex :: Don’t spit at me. I’ll catch your amateur virginity.
>I admit it. I am indeed a virgin!

gg :: Could you not spit while you talk?
STDs from hookers are contagious.
>Fine I admit it, I’m a virgin!

Koharubi :: Just don’t spit.
Your amateurish virginity will infect me.

Aniplex :: Hanekawa’s good at looking after people, that’s all there is to it.
In her mind, the most pathetic are the most pitiful and unjustly disadvantaged…
That’s the blissful misconception she’s under.
>That certainly is a blissful misconception.
>The most pathetic are merely the most stupid, that’s all.

gg :: You’re wrong, that’s just because Hanekawa is very helpful.
“The most useless person is the most pitiful, they always have unreasonable losses.”
That’s the type of pleasant misunderstanding she has.
>The most useless person is the most foolish. That’s truly a pleasant misunderstanding.

Koharubi :: That’s incorrect.
That’s just because Hanekawa is honestly the type that looks after others.
“The most useless people are pitiful.”
“They will definitely be used.”
She always has such amusing misconceptions.
>That sure is an amusing misconception, isn’t it?
>Even though the most useless people are just the most foolish.

qIIq :: It’s not like that.
I just take care of her.
She is the most hopeless and the most pitiful, so she gets the short end of the stick too much.
You’re just happy about being wrong.
>{\i1}That’s {\i0}truly the bliss of the ignorant.
>Although, the most hopeless one is just the stupidest one.

Aniplex :: But you see, Araragi…
For me to readily put my trust in him…
Until today, I’ve been subjected to deceit numerous times.
So there’s just no way that I can be so optimistic about this.

gg :: But you see, Araragi-kun.
If I trust a person so easily,
I don’t know how many times I would’ve been tricked.
That’s why I can’t think so optimistically no matter what.

Koharubi :: However, Araragi-kun…
If I could believe him that easily, I would have been tricked countless times.
That’s why I can never have such optimistic thoughts.

qIIq :: But you know, Araragi.
I can’t just believe him that blindly; I’ve been tricked many, many times up until now.
And because of that, no matter what you tell me, I can’t think in such an optimistic way.

>It’s all right, you don’t have to show off for me.
>After all, you don’t know a thing about anything else besides that, do you?
Do you know what verbal abuse is?
>Then why don’t you call the verbal police?

gg :: It’s nothing, I’m just good at astronomy and space science.
>There’s no point in acting cool in front of me.
>You probably don’t know anything else apart from that.
Do you know about “verbal abuse”?
>Then call the verbal abuse police.

Koharubi :: It’s nothing.
I’m just familiar with astronomy and cosmology.
>It’s fine.
>There’s no need to act cool in front of me.
>Besides, you don’t know about anything else, do you?
Are you aware of what verbal abuse is?
>You should tell that to the police officer in charge of verbal abuse.

qIIq :: What are you saying? I’m well-versed in astronomy and astronomical science.
>It’s fine.
>You don’t have to be cool in front of me.

Aniplex :: I know Shinobu and the nymphomaniac cat attacked you and the class president…
…out of malice and animosity, but that’s not the case with this crab.
>What do you mean, it’s not the case?
Remember what I said? We’re up against a god here.
In other words, we’re not going to exterminate it…
Rather, we’ll be asking a favor from the god.

gg :: Shinobu-chan and the Perverted Cat attacked you and Class Rep-chan with malicious intentions,
but this crab is different.
>Different?
Didn’t I tell you? It’s a God.
That’s why we’re going to pray to it instead of exterminating it.

Koharubi :: Shinobu-chan and that nymphomaniac cat attacked you and that class representative out of malice…
But that’s not the case with the crab.
>What do you mean?
Didn’t I say that the opponent is a god?
As such, we are not going to exorcise it.
Starting now, we are going to pray.

qIIq :: Little Shinobu and the Perverted Cat attacked you and Reppy with evil intent and hostility, but
this crab is not like that.
>What do you mean “not like that”?
Didn’t I say? This opponent is a god.
That’s why, you don’t purge it. From now on, we’re going to pray to the god. Humbly.

Aniplex :: Besides, these gods tend to be a pretty lax bunch.
>Lax?
They don’t care about humans on an individual basis.
In fact, as far as the gods are concerned, there’s no difference…
…in age, gender, or weight among the three of us.

gg :: Those Gods are just a sketchy bunch.
>Sketchy?
They don’t really care about humans.
To those Gods, our age, gender, and weight are no different.

Koharubi :: Though, gods are a bunch of careless beings.
>Careless, as in?
They don’t care about the personal problems of humans.
In fact, gods can’t even differentiate between the age, gender, or weight of the three of us.

qIIq :: And gods are a pretty blind bunch.
>Blind?
They don’t care about each individual human.
In reality, our age, sex, or dignity don’t make any difference to gods.

Aniplex :: But I can’t help thinking about it… That if I hadn’t resisted that day,
…at the very least, we wouldn’t have ended up like this.
That what we had wouldn’t have been broken.

gg :: If I didn’t resist back then, at least my family wouldn’t have become like this.
It wouldn’t have become so broken.

Koharubi :: If I hadn’t resisted at that time, maybe my mother wouldn’t have fallen into such a pathetic state.
Then our relationship would not have been broken.

Aniplex :: {\i1}That is to say, when Senjyogahara met that crab, she severed all ties with her mother.{\i}
{\i1}She stopped agonizing over her mother.{\i}
{\i1}She stopped feeling for her. She lost the weight of it all.{\i}

gg :: In other words, when Senjougahara met the crab, she cut the ties between herself and her mother.
It erased her thoughts about her mother as worries.
It stopped her from feeling.
And her weight was taken away from her.

Koharubi :: That is to say, when Senjougahara met the crab,
she cut all ties to her mother so she could stop feeling troubled regarding such matters.
She stopped thinking about those feelings, and therefore lost weight. {Note: More word play. “Omoi” can mean both “weight” and “feelings.”}

qIIq :: {\i1}So, when she met the crab, Senjougahara cut her bonds with her mother.
{\i1}She ceased to worry about her mother.
{\i1}She stopped caring. She lost her dignity. She started deceiving herself.

Aniplex :: – I’m Karen! – I’m Tsukihi!
– You know jungle-gyms, right? – I’ve been to one.
– Isn’t it going too far? – What do you mean?
– “Jungle” is too much. – It’s not really a jungle.
– And “gym”? – It’s not a gym, either.
– They give you a misconception! – What’s the correct name, then?
– How about “iron bar special?” – Now it sounds like a weapon!

gg :: Karen here!
And Tsukihi!
Talking about Jungle Gyms
I’ve talked too!
Isn’t it overtalked?
Overtalked?
Well, Jungle…
It’s not really jungle.
Well, Gym…
It’s not really gym too..
That’s an image manipulation!
So, what name suits it?
Isn’t “Metal bar special” ok?
That seems awful!

Koharubi :: I’m Karen.
I’m Tsukihi.
When you say jungle-gyms nowadays…
I’ve said it before!
Maybe you’ve said too much.
Too much?
What do you mean by “jungle”?
It’s not a jungle.
What about gym?
It’s not a gym either.
That’s false advertisement!
Then can they name it so you can be happy?
Maybe something like “Despair Special”?
That’s seriously sounds pretty bad!

qIIq ::  Karen here!
And Tsukihi!

Aniplex :: – Once again, time for a preview quiz! – Quiz!
– Let’s say you’re a bus driver. – A bus driver?! The very idea!
– Now, three people get on at the first stop. – I’m all aboard with this!
All right, so what’s the bus driver’s name?
That’s abridging the joke too much!
Yes. That is indeed your name.
You wrapped it up like magic!

gg :: So, it’s time for the preview quiz!
Quiz time!
You are a bus driver.
For me to be a bus driver it’s very…
On the first station three people got on.
Got on! Got on!
So, what is the name of the bus driver?
You skipped too much!
Yes, this is your name.
A tricky thing.

Koharubi :: Then once again, let’s start the preview riddle.
Riddle.
You’re a bus driver.
I can’t believe I’m the bus driver!
The three of us rode it in the first episode!
Yep, we rode it!
What is the name of the person who drives your bus?
Don’t go too fast!
All right, the answer is your name.
You made it like a magic show.

    Well, fuck me… Is qIIq version really that bad or am I just retarded? I originally watched Koharubi (Coalgirls) version.

    • qIIq is a “joint” between qq (gg rejects, from how it was explained to me) and II (Russian fansubbers). Make sense that you’d have issues with what is almost entirely a Russian translation.

    (I tried to choose something for every block of lines, so I only choose N/A once.)

    Seems like I, as someone who is not a native English speaker and therefore has a different sense of language than a native English speaker, am the audience for official subs. Which is quite funny, because Aniplex does not officially deliver Bakemonogatari outside of USA/Canada. Inofficially they do deliver it, because I got my Bake BD-box without any problems. For ~200$. Fuck international delivery charges and customs.
    Maybe my English taste just sucks. Anyway, i-it’s not like I bought that box to rewatch the series with official subs anyway, Aniplex!

    I was picking 2 or 3 groups for basically every set. This is about what I expected.

    Reply
    • I specifically picked lines for this that had both variation between the groups and QUALITY. Before, I was only focused on variation of translation style/phrasing between groups. So for that reason, I’d expect every group to have gotten worse in people’s eyes. There was no real “good group” for this post.

      My lack of explanation obfuscated the point, but I was expecting people to pick every line that failed, not just the ones that failed the *most*. I just updated the post to reflect this.

      Reply
      • Yeah, your use of the superlative didn’t exactly convey that. Did you mean that in the previous party too, or are the rules here different?

        Reply
        • The rules for this party are completely different. Translation Parties are supposed to be for choosing the group you like the least. After-the-Parties are intended to help you find out the groups you hate the most.

          Fun arises when the group you picked as your favorite in the translation party is the group you picked as the worst in the after-the-party. It’s like waking up and finding out the person you went home with at the party isn’t quite what you thought they were like last night. That’s the thematic intent.

    This one was easy. I mostly went with the choice that had the most obviously mistranslated lines. Seriously, the words “amateur virginity” didn’t raise any red flags with all the editors (*cough*cough*), QCers, and TLCers that were in Koharubi at that time?

    Reply
    • Editors were seen as glorified spellcheckers back then. Combine that with a group focused on literal translations and you’re going to run into issues by today’s standards. I think the scripts I put out back then were shit, but I don’t particularly think they were worse than my most of my contemporaries’.

      • Waitaminute.

        Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t “prostitute-only virginity” THORA-qIIq’s line and gg had the line about hookers and STDs?

        So that means the ones who went with “amateur virgins” are Koharubi and…

  9. I’m just going to stick with ANE/gg since they’re release had the best typesetting, which is pretty important to have for this show. How was the typesetting (or lack of) in the Aniplex BDs?

    Reply
        • They all had the same shitty typesetting, which is why I wanted to know why he thought ANE’s was so much better than the rest.

          Oh, and if there’s one thing I’m proud of with Koharubi’s release when the show aired, it’s the typesetting. Leaps and bounds better than the rest. Too bad we hardsubbed it so these “fansub” groups couldn’t just claim it as their own.

      • CoalGirls did a ton of bad block typesetting, specifically during the split second wall-of-text frames. I don’t have their release anymore, but during said scenes, their would be a typset box blocking the kanji.

        I have no issues with block typesetting, but the wall of texts have a canvas-like texture to them (the Black/Red Scene frames), so solid-colored block typesetting looks shitty.

        I haven’t seen THORA’s version, but I’ve seen some screenshots of it (specifically this one: http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/600/bmgcolorsvsf.jpg). It’s pretty like CoalGirl’s, but with a shitty font, and the typset block is somehow worse than BloatGirls (CGi’s blocked the entire screen) since it cuts through the kanji.

        As for my original question though, how is the typsetting on the retail BDs?

    It’s a tie between Aniplex and Koharubi
    I can’t exactly decide if this is a good or bad sign.

    Huh..Last time I only had 1-2 In Aniplex from the first episode compared to this one.

    I watched Coalgirls (Koharubi) BD Version.

  12. Okay, I was drunk the first time, so I took this one again.

    Overall scores…
    Aniplex: 7 times
    gg: 8 times
    Koharubi: 5 times
    qIIq: 10 times
    Looks like your best bet is qIIq

    I think I’d go with Koharubi.

  13. From last time,
    qIIq: 4 times
    Koharubi: 2 times
    gg: 12 times
    Aniplex: 4 times

    This time,
    Aniplex: 7 times
    gg: 11 times
    Koharubi: 10 times
    qIIq: 10 times

    So apparently gg is both the best AND the worst according to my choices. I must’ve drank too much at the TL party. ;___;

    Welp, I am glad I chose gg. Some of these were kind of a lose-lose situation though. (By some, I mean all of them)

  15. The only ‘group’ with a comprehensible translation of #2 that actually provides any insight into the what is being said about Hanekawa’s personality is Aniplex. And they also managed to do it with sentences that actually make sense. Koharubi was the only fansub that came close to the nuance of meaning Araragi uses this idiom to convey, but they did it clumsily with more words and less clarity (don’t think less clarity than Aniplex is possible? enjoy #2 from gg, or the just-plain-wrong context from qIIq).

    How hard is it to convey that “The most helpless people are pitiable, for opportunists use the useless..”
