Mondaiji is the best anime of 2013, hands-down. No lies.

Lemme fucking hype this shit cuz it deserves it.

“Spoilers” up through episode 3. But who cares? Keep reading and live a little.

Plot

Three humans get summoned by a bunny girl to participate in a skyworld battle royale with supernatural beings because they’re bored of their everyday lives. By “supernatural beings” I mean shit like espers, warlocks, vampires, demon lords, and gods. Yes, gods.

And in the first episode, a god gets killed. For real.
And in the first episode, one of them goes to the end of the world to kill a god for funsies. I’m not joking.

The gist of the world is that there are these clans called “Communities” and all the clans fight each other for members, territory, and fine teas.

Well, I guess they order tea rather than fight for it, but whatever.
Well, I guess they order tea rather than fight for it, but whatever.

I dunno what else to say. Shit’s pretty simple to figure out.

Characters

Here’s why the show is great: every character is fucking overpowered as fuck. And it’s awesome. So, if you liked Horizon but thought Tori needed the power of a god? Yeah, now you’ve got three fucking godToris.

"I didn't like Horizon. Is this show gonna suck as badly as it did?"
“I didn’t like Horizon. Is this show gonna suck as badly as it did?”

You fuck right the fuck off, you ignorant shit. No, get the fuck out. You don’t deserve this show.

Everyone else? Keep with me. Because yes, this show is as good as Horizon.

Sakamaki Izayoi

Sakamaki has two modes: 1. Not giving a fuck and– Actually, he only has one mode.

Damn right.
Damn right.

See, Sakamaki is aware he’s more powerful than anything there is. He just fucking wrecks shit. Just wrecks it.

Not even the gods of the universe can measure how strong he is — he breaks every scanner. Check it:

Sakamaki knows.
Anyway, back to his BAMF levels:

  • Pretty much says he can defeat anything he wants (episode 3 when promising to rescue Jin’s demon lord friend)
  • Often steps aside to let the weaker characters handle things so they can get their self-esteem up and not feel useless just cuz he’s bulldozing through every enemy
  • Takes responsibility for molding a kid into a strong, confident leaderman
  • Hands in pockets, always
  • So bishie
<3
“Is there a flood in your pants or are you just happy to see me?”

I’ve only seen him slightly confused once, and that was when the universe around him broke apart, leaving him standing in the middle of a cosmic void. And then the void closed up, leaving him in Alaska or something.

But the next time we see his face?

Look at that cocky grin. Alpha as fuck.

Kudou Asuka

Now let’s take this chick. She’s like a Tohsaka Rin that I’d be willing to fuck without putting to sleep first.

[IB] Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo - 01 [720p] [10bit] [D871B175].mkv_snapshot_03.55_[2013.02.05_13.58.32]

What’s her power? Her power is everything has to agree with her, and she can use it multiple times. It’s basically perma-Geass, except better.

[IB] Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo - 03 [720p] [10bit] [E58B918D].mkv_snapshot_16.49_[2013.02.05_13.11.34]

You know how the Bleach fans that ignore Tite’s madness argue that Orihime is actually the most powerful Bleach character because she can reject anything? (Death, life, all existence, whatever). Well I guess Asuka’s the fucking equivalent.

Everything has to agree with her. Though, I guess “agree” is a bad word. Sorry, I wanted to ease you into this shit. Her real power is that everything has to submit to her authority.

This includes her enemies, their powers (spirit bomb: return), and fucking inanimate objects (she tells a sword to fucking give her its power and it does). If this chick wanted, the universe would fucking implode. And unlike Orihime, she’s not a useless slab of tearmeat. A+.

So fucking kawaii
Waifu-tier? Yes.

And… Kasukabe Yoh

Yeah, this girl…

No, she's not the rabbit.
No, she’s not the rabbit.

Okay, I sorta lied about the “three godTohris” bit. This bitch is fucking useless. So far as I can tell, she has the power of animal friendship. That is, every animal she befriends can give her its power.

I mean, that’s cool I guess, but it’s pretty fucking limited cuz most animals suck and the ones that don’t suck aren’t likely to go around high-fiving people. Did I mention that if she loses her fucking necklace, she loses that power? Cuz yeah, that’s not good.

Yeah, might wanna keep that more hidden or something.
Might wanna keep that more hidden or something, vacant-eyes.

And unlike the other two who came for the lulz, she just came to the world cuz she wanted some nakamas.

[IB] Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo - 02 [720p] [10bit] [816E3987].mkv_snapshot_06.35_[2013.02.05_13.48.07]
Lame.
I assume she has some fucking hidden power that’ll make her at least close to the other two, but I haven’t seen that come up yet in the show, so I can’t say it’ll happen. Anyway, I just ignore her and focus on the other two. Makes the show better.

tl;dr: Mondaiji is short for Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo, and it’s a damn good show. Watch it.

      • Dog Days is miracle of the universe and I can’t wait for season 3. Those 5/8 months will be long.
Dog Days should air every week for years. It’s epitome of fun.

    • 1. A guy can’t fap to the Dog Days MC without feeling gay
      2. Dog Days was a children’s anime where no one could get hurt, but people die when they are killed in Mondaiji
      3. Your comparison makes no sense at all

      • 1) Don’t need to fap to MC, plenty other fluffy girls and me having a cat fetish

        2) Having childish fun can also be good

        3) Teens getting sucked into parallel world with animal people, enough?

  1. I had a hard time choosing between this and Kotoura-san. But in the end, Kotoura-san earned the #1 spot in my winter list. And this, 1.1

Can’t agree with you more. Iyazoi is an OP character much like Kirito in SAO (rage, haters!). I’d like to hear Vegeta scream again after using the geiger counter on Iyazoi.

    As for Yo,
    >I assume she has some fucking hidden power that’ll make her at least close to the other two<
this did not came to my mind until you say it. Remember, Kurousagi picked and gathered only the strongest, if not the strongest of them all, from different timeline (world). So what you said might be true. Just please, not a saiyan transformation (the monkey part)

And for Rin, if you do not want to use /agree/, submit to or obey her is another good choice, as far as 4 episodes are concerned.

But, as someone from the story said (blame my memory, as if I am sorry for forgetting it), their powers are raw.

They need Bisky to teach them how to use Nen properly and beat Greed Island.

Too bad this is only a 10 episode adaptation.

And yes, Rin is yours. I'll take Kurousagi, kthx.

    • Kotoura can’t last. You’ll drop it from your top spot by the end of the season, I guarantee it. Forced drama can only last so long.

As for the article, if I had actual issue with the word “agree”, I would have written the post differently. The main point of including that word and then backtracking is because “I wanted to ease you into this shit.” There was narrative reason behind it.

  2. …ok sure you convinced me. Not with the Horizon references though, I never could get past the Dragonaut character designs.

…and it’s not like I’m already watching around 20 shows, balanced with a full-time job and other hobbies.

    …I hate you.

    …and myself.

  3. I hate to agree since your taste is… questionable… under normal circumstances. But this show is pretty BAMF and I cannot lie. Best show of the year, certainly not, since Space Brothers is still going, but still damned awesome.

I don’t think it’s as good as Horizon though (S3 where?)

    • Maybe I’ll like her more when some doujins come out, but right now? We wasted like a third of an episode on her riding a fucking griffin. nothx

      • Eh? I thought that episode was really nice. I had a very nice impression of her considering how well she handled the challenge. I mean, sure, Asuka has an awesome control ability and Izayoi blazes through shit like a BAMF, but You has some pretty good qualities as well. I think the ability to talk to animals is pretty interesting and she did take on that vicious ride with the Griffin too. Might be a different kind of enjoyment from the other two characters since she isn’t quite as flashy, but I think there’s enough to her character as it is right now.

        • Just watched 04. She’s useless. I mean, she’s cute, but there’s not much else to her.

If you really want to watch a show about women who talk to cats, I could leave a webcam up in my grandma’s house and you could tune into that from time to time.

          • It was her cute side that won me over for the most part, but I don’t believe that she’s entirely useless. They did get some sort of prize out her accomplishment with the griffin at least. And even then, as far as I know from episode 3, I haven’t seen Asuka accomplish anything more than information gathering. And as far as combat reliability goes, I’d say that neither of them are all that good and that Izayoi is the only one that can do well in a fight.

            Reply
          • they should have at least given her another ability, like breathing fire when she met a dragon, but noooo, the author thought that her cuteness would defeat the demon lords! heck they didn’t even got a boner!

      • Aight, having watched three mins of each release, I’m pretty confident Hatsuyuki is NOT the way to go. But for Commie vs. IB I’ll have to look a lot more into that.

I need to pump some caffeine into me cuz I’m falling asleep right now…

      • Yeah I came to post this too. Here we are, the net’s great home of fansub recommendations, with a series strongly recommended, but no sub recommendation to go with it? You have let down the team this time dark_justice. You may be the hero we deserve but you weren’t the one we needed :(

  4. Definitely one of my favorites this season. On an unrelated topic, I would love to get Dark_Sage’s opinion on the Doremi BD720p batch of Love Live promo videos that they just TLd. Specifically PVs 03 and 04. He will either laugh, cry, or cut his wrists in frustration at how the TL and QC was done.

  5. Dark_Sage, I’m watching like 15 fucking shows this season. I told myself I wouldn’t pick up any more, and I’ve got a no-drop policy. I’ve also never seen Horizon. Should I go against my better judgment and pick this one up?

    • I hope most of those are the shitty four-minute ones.

Horizon and Mondaiji are aimed at the crowd of people who can’t stand having pathetic protagonists. And both decided to break convention while having awesome MCs (Mondaiji with MC having the highest power levels from the outset, and Horizon by having an immense cast of characters that are actually thought out and an insanely convoluted plot). If you can’t stand crazy stylistic shit happening all the time, you probably won’t be too keen on these shows. But if you think you might like to see what happens when Japan stops being so beta, watch both. Horizon first, because I think it’s handled slightly better than this, which is more traditional in regards to Horizon’s “insanity”.

      • Three of them are the shitty four-minute ones. The rest are all standard-length shows.

And crazy stylistic shit sounds right up my alley, actually. As for the protagonist being a badass, that’s fine by me. I guess I’ll try out Horizon first then. I like pretty much anything, so I think I’ll enjoy it. I’m really hoping it’s as insane as you’re making it out to be, ’cause that sounds pretty entertaining.

        Reply
        • Well it’s not insane in the sense of “lol we r randumb” like the FLCL-type comedies Japan’s been chugging out in small batches every now and then. It just breaks some of the standards you’d think most shows would keep.

      • >Horizon and Mondaiji are aimed at the crowd of people who can’t stand having pathetic protagonists

Sorry, but Mary-Sues are in my “pathetic” list. And no, overpowered douchebags != badass. Strugglers are badass. (See: Guts.)

Either the mains on this thing get a reality check (and -fast-) or the show is boring and I won’t pick it up.

  6. Sounds good, it might have a chance at being #2. Picked up.

#1 is reserved for AKB0048 Next Stage, the only series I immediately gave 10/10 and kept the score.

YES! They just go overboard with their pathetic, good for nothing, indecisive MCs lately.
Mondaiji is so good because it doesn’t even try to explain why the MC is so badass, he’s just alpha as fuck without being an asshole! Refreshing, so refreshing.
