Visual Review

Karaoke.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_02.15_[2013.05.15_20.02.57] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_02.30_[2013.05.15_20.03.22]

Opening. The karaoke colors at the top constantly change to fit the scene, and the result is impressive. However, while the colors are all kawaii and shit up top, the carpet don’t match the drapes. What results is an oftimes confusing mis-match of colors when everything’s taken in at once.

Assuming you only read the Japanese bits, you’ll be perfectly fine, but fair warning if your eyes drift elsewhere.

Rating: Okay+.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_22.14_[2013.05.15_22.34.09] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_23.04_[2013.05.15_22.34.40]

Ending. Chihiro went with a similar philosophy here with the ED — party up front, business in the back. However, with the shifting images and everything, it works out a whole lot better here. And the karaoke effect blends in perfectly with the ED. Well done.

Rating: Great.

Typesetting.

Who wants to bet they just used gg’s translation and called it good? I can’t see two groups coming up with “planned”. This level of stupidity is rarely so coincidental.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_08.23_[2013.05.15_21.50.10] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_15.17_[2013.05.15_22.18.03] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_16.37_[2013.05.15_22.20.06] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_16.47_[2013.05.15_22.20.19] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_21.48_[2013.05.15_22.33.33] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_23.36_[2013.05.15_22.35.00]

I’d wager most typesetters would find this release’s typesetting to be absolute shit, but I thought it was a passable effort. Can’t say I put much thought into the typesetting section other than “does it sort of match?” and “did they bother to typeset most things?”

Script Review

Karaoke.

I didn’t check. Probably should have.

Main Script.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_00.13_[2013.05.14_20.47.04]

Chihiro: seting the mood just right.

“He’ll somewhat come.”? Yeah, no. Try “somehow”. Unless he’s able to phase in and out of dimensions, in which case Chihiro would have it right.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_00.31_[2013.05.14_20.48.26]

“Little Bean”, huh? You can tell it’s a direct translation, because it makes no sense.

Do note that just because it’s a direct, literal, word-for-word dictionary match, that doesn’t make it the best choice to use as a nickname. For example, as someone viewing this line in English, what does “Little Bean” mean to you? I’d wager it doesn’t mean anything other than an awkward title that has to be explained away as untranslateable.

For some reason, I don’t believe that was the intended effect when the Japanese writers were coming up with the original script.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_03.09_[2013.05.15_21.22.23]

They have it as ouji here, but then use “prince” later in the episode. Make your minds up, plzthx.

Ooh, perfect up until the last line where it falls apart worse than Shades of Jenga.

By using “that”, that which he’s referring to must be obvious in the viewer’s mind. And it’s really not clear here. Yes, we know he’s talking about the house disappearing, but there needs to be a specific line or something to refer back to or this doesn’t work out.

Specificity is important.

Sometimes I wonder what life would be like if we didn’t have groups putting stuff out like this.

But then I realize even fansubbing needs a mudsill class. Thanks for taking one for the team, Chihibros.

Glad to see you’re attempting to erase the stigma behind your name with lines like these, Chihiro. Reach for the stars.

“faint” doesn’t really get the point across. The deal is that he has a HUMONGOUS, Dark_Sage-tier penis. Make the contrast clearer by using “little” instead of “faint”.

Chihiro consistently left words that should have been italicized in an unformatted… format.

And while we’re on the subject of consistency, I should also mention the timing in this episode wasn’t the sugoiest.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_15.05_[2013.05.15_22.18.21] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_15.22_[2013.05.15_22.18.31]

Oh, so it is possible to write this line correctly. Fancy the fuck out of that, gg!

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_17.10_[2013.05.15_22.21.00] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_17.15_[2013.05.15_22.20.53]

The line you’re looking for is, “You push yourself too hard.” Try it next time you find yourself on a cliff!

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_17.19_[2013.05.15_22.21.38]

Yeah, Chihiro has some issues with sentence pacing. The group members have such an aversion to commas you’d think they were raped by grammar Nazis.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_17.52_[2013.05.15_22.23.23] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_17.55_[2013.05.15_22.23.34] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_17.59_[2013.05.15_22.23.42]

Close, but no English.

“I know you didn’t mean any harm.”

“You actually just wanted to do something nice for me, right?”

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_18.05_[2013.05.15_22.24.15] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_18.07_[2013.05.15_22.24.20] [Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_18.10_[2013.05.15_22.24.26]

Anyone wanna guess what the point of this scene is? Chihiro guessed too, but they made sure to try and get it wrong.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_19.02_[2013.05.15_22.25.41]

Present tense, peaches.

“You aren’t asleep yet?”

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_19.46_[2013.05.15_22.26.40]

This would be accurate if “sunk” weren’t a word. I guess Chihiro played the retard version of Battleship.

[Chihiro]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[1280x720_H.264_AAC][4355C7B2].mkv_snapshot_20.28_[2013.05.15_22.27.42]

Oh come on, at least try to act like you’re putting some effort into this.

“If she catches me, I’m dead meat…”

or

“If I get caught, she’ll kill me for sure…”

or something that’s not so bleh.

Hatsuyuki put the most (positive) effort into this release. I’d suggest going with theirs if you want the least bad potential release for the show.

Or you can roll the dice and hope one of the other groups realized paste isn’t a proper substitute for breakfast. But I wouldn’t count on them achieving that level of sentience in this millenium.

      • While I agree that “sunken” works best as an adjective, that link I provided does state that it can be used as a past participle for the verb. “Sunk” may read better, sure, but that doesn’t make sunken /wrong/.

        Reply
        • Unless D_S is commenting on a misuse of the word? In which case, he’s also wrong, because it’s a play on “sink your teeth into” which is a perfectly valid idiom.

          Reply
          • No, by using “accurate”, you’re suggesting that “sunken” isn’t a valid past participle when it is. Sure, “sunk” is better and more commonly-used, but to say it’s inaccurate is, well, inaccurate.

You can call it many things, such as archaic/obsolete/sounds like crap on a stick, but you can’t say it’s a *wrong* construction when the English language dictates it isn’t :S

            Hope that helps :)

            Reply
            • Well, you *can* say it’s wrong (it’s a free country/internet) but that’d make you wrong…

And apologies for sticking up for Chihiro on this one – it’s not intentional >.>

              Reply
            • D_S said “This could be accurate if ‘sunk’ weren’t a word”.

What I got from this phrase was “If it weren’t for the fact that ‘sunk’ is a word that exists and is a much better alternative to ‘sunken’ in several ways, such as making the phrase sound more natural, you could of course go for ‘sunken'”.

Even if “sunken” is a word that exists and fits, D_S has been complaining about how unnatural fansub seems lately. And using “sunken” there… It sounds really unnatural to me. But maybe that’s because my English classes featured “sunken” as an adjective only.

  1. About the “little sister: planned” thing. That’s a direct translation. In that, as Yokodera mentioned in an earlier episode, he’s planning on making Tsukiko his little sister. So that’s what he has her in his cellphone as.

Also, “Little Bean” is another direct translation of Azusa’s nickname. Her surname, Azuki (小豆), can alternatively be read as “Komame”, which means, yep, “little bean”.

    • I know the context. I’m saying it wouldn’t be phrased like that in English. I went over this in the comments of gg’s review, but I think “to-be” gets the point across better. I doubt that’s the ideal translation, though.

That’s interesting, though it doesn’t make it a good nickname.

  2. Mebbe you ought to ditch Hyoubu and just do this one instead D_S.

And yeah, I went back and heard her say albatross but I doubt even the Japanese would get the joke. Its such an obscure pun if you could even call it that.

    Reply
    • It’s not that obscure if you know anything about golf. An albatross is when you hit three under par. As par is the expected number of shots you’d hit on average on any given hole, hitting three under is a real achievement, which is why you need luck on your side to hole it that fast.

    • Ah, apologies. Had to change Quick to Slow. (Quick is the default status in my review template, and sometimes I forget to check actual speed.)

      Reply
      • Episodes 1-3 didn’t take 3 weeks, they took like 1/2 of one. 4 was 12 hours after CR airing, 5 was 36 due to the editor moving. Your choice if you want to say that under 48 hours is over 48 hours.

        Reply
            • 5/11, 14:57 vs 5/14 2:30, based on tosho times. So 2.5 days, fine. I’m not particularly sure why that metric is such a sore point for you, though.

I don’t have it out for you, dude. 48 hours is just the arbitrary cut off I decided on a long time ago.

              Reply
              • Because when your goal is to release in a timely fashion and you succeed, yet are called slow due to a technicality, it pretty much says that we completely failed.

                Reply
        • I guess it depends on whether D_S measures from the CR airing time, which is a day late in this case, or the time it airs in Japan.

I believe it’s probably the latter, which means episode 5 certainly did take longer than 48 hours.

          Reply
          • Given that pretty much all groups release within 48 hours, I think you should consider either splitting it into 24/48/above or just move the 48 boundary to 36 or even 24. ‘Cause, like, more info is better.

  3. An Albatross is an actual golf term. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Par_%28score%29#Albatross

Hentai Ouji and prince is consistent. We elected that whenever he was called Hentai Ouji in full we would leave it as that, given that it’s part of the title. All other instances we will change to prince (Ouji), or pervert (Hentai-san).

I used to find these reviews reliable, but I’m not really sure anymore when I find errors in them.

  4. Get the paste ready for consumption. Audio has “event” in it, though that’s not worth much. (didn’t leave in the {\i1} for those that were default italics)

CR: “I see! This is going to be \Na “barging in” pattern!\\It happens all the time in those girly games.\\When the main character is taking a bath,\\the heroine always barges in!”

rori: “She’s going for a barge-in scenario!\\It’s standard in girl games!\\The main character is in the bath, and the heroine barges right in!”

Eveyuu: “Oh, I get it. It’s the event where she comes barging in.\\It’s a staple of one of {\i0}those{\i1} games.\\When the main character’s taking a bath, the heroine barges in!”

Hatsuyuki: “Oh, I get it. She’ll burst in after a while.\\It happens all the time in those gal games.\\The girl bursts in when the protagonist is in the bath.”

Chihiro: “I see! This is going to be the “barging in” event!\\It happens all the time in those girl games.\\When the main character is taking a bath, the heroine always barges in!”

gg: “Now comes the part where a girl walks in on me!\\That’s pretty standard for games that focus on girls.\\If the MC takes a bath, the main heroine will walk in on him!”

      • Most of these only sound weird, whereas CR is genuinely wrong. “Girly games” gives the impression that the games are aimed at girls, which is not the case.

            • I considered dating sim, eroge, galge, etc., but I didn’t want to overinterpret and guess incorrectly. To me “girl game” sounds way too much like a game targeted at girls. Personally, I tried to dodge that line with just “\those\ games”, but the two surrounding lines sucked anyway.

Technically if you assume that the audience has high power levels of Wapanese, then “gal game” (galge) refers to the correct genre of game, I think…? I had to wiki that.

You’d assume they’d be watching it RAW

              • He’s talking about eroge/porn games. While there are all-ages versions, the kind he’s talking about is pretty much guaranteed to have sex in it.

“Oh, I get it. This is where she walks in on me bathing, like in one of {those/}my {eroge/}porn games. This kind of scene is basically a staple of the genre!”

Still sucks, but slightly less than the above. >_>

Cut the redundancy and use a pronoun for the last part because the video makes it obvious what happens.
At least I think it does, because I’ve only seen that one screenshot of it. The show is about sex and related stuff, right?

                • The show isn’t actually all that much about sex and related stuff. Title is a bit misleading.

There’s also a hook to a scene a minute later where MC-kun notes that Tsukiko hasn’t yet walked in on him. Again, “event” is said in the audio (~2 seconds). There are plenty of times when English words get misappropriated and should be ignored, but “event” at least makes sense here, so I’d rather keep it even if it’s not a big deal.

                  So, reshuffling lines…
“Oh, I get it! She’s gonna come barging in any time now.\\It’s a staple event in eroge games.\\When the protagonist’s taking a bath, the heroine walks in on him!

                  {Next scene}Damn, she’s late starting that event.”

    • This is what happens when everyone’s too autistic to just give in and use “galge,” which most people watching this show will be able to understand perfectly fine anyway. Alternatively, dating sim would probably have been more than acceptable as well, if you were that opposed to using galge.

  5. I’ve read a few reviews here that have evaluated the accuracy of the subtitles based solely on the subtitles themselves, and the reviewer’s personal deductions, and not what the characters are actually saying in Japanese. That indicates the reviewer knows very little Japanese. If that is the case, what is the point of these reviews?
