Karaoke.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_00.21_[2013.06.06_10.59.51]

No karaoke because it’s “literally impossible” to negotiate those rights. Don’t worry, though. The more money Crunchyroll makes, the more likely it is they’ll money-hat the studios into giving them song translation rights regardless of the previously-claimed impossibilities.

I mean, there’s no way the bottom-feeders who started the “company” just plan to pocket the cash and continue providing lowest-cost subtitles to the lowest common denominator of anime fans they can find until the business model runs aground since all the money in anime is in product and they’re too stupid to manage that properly, right?

Right.

Typesetting.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_00.17_[2013.06.06_10.59.32]

It’s definitely acceptable for official releases to neglect translating the title. After all, if you’re watching this shit, you probably already know Japanese, right?

There’s absolutely no way anyone’s gonna get to this image and think to themselves what the differences between the two fonts are. Is the yellow-orange one the “Mushibugyo” title with the text in diamonds being a subtitle for the show? Vice-versa? Are both read exactly the same? Perhaps the yellow-orange reads “Mushi” and the diamonds read “bugyo”?

Good fucking thing no one has ever wondered these things. Top-tier professional standards as always from the American Anime Industry.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_02.35_[2013.06.06_11.21.25]

It’s beautiful. There’s no way to improve this.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_19.37_[2013.06.06_12.47.55]

If I weren’t so wap, I may just have had difficulties understanding what was going on here.

CR, you should probably underestimate your audience’s power levels just a little bit more.

Script Review

Main Script.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_01.47_[2013.06.06_11.12.53]

If you give the guy an official title, you don’t need the honorific there. It’s like saying “Sir President Barack Obama”.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_01.53_[2013.06.06_11.16.34] [HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_01.57_[2013.06.06_11.16.42]

Did Mugai refuse the first one? Did he accept? The way this is phrased opens up unnecessary confusion when the second part is a screen away.

And no, it doesn’t matter that the confusion is alleviated later when the problem could be solved right here.

“Mizuno-sama previously received Mugai-dono’s help with an insect extermination,”

“and has requested his aid once again.”

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_02.11_[2013.06.06_11.20.28]

The Insect Magistrate itself doesn’t work in pairs. This is off.

“And so, since the officers of the Insect Magistrate normally work in pairs,”

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_03.35_[2013.06.06_11.23.33] [HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_03.40_[2013.06.06_11.23.42]

The way this starts off makes it seem like Jinbei’s about to start listing the reasons why he admires Mugai.

“His overwhelming power, his beautiful hair, his deep gaze, those rippling abs…”

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_03.44_[2013.06.06_11.25.12]

…but as this line is the next one, that doesn’t fit. The second line in this sequence needs to be more definite and less similar to a listing.

“That overwhelming power of his…” will allow the third line and the second to fit together better.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_03.49_[2013.06.06_11.26.50]

“favor” doesn’t exactly have the right implications. Use “debt” instead.

the favor he did for me -> the debt I owe him

Mugai didn’t save Jinbei from death out of a sense of overwhelming kindness, nor was it portrayed that way. This is your typical “I am in debt to another man and must pay him back and no, there’s no sexual tension between us” scenario.

No, it’s the work of an Oohitonomi. And goddammit I kinda want a TL Note right now. I’m missing so much intricate Japanese culture!

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_08.22_[2013.06.06_12.25.23]

Oh fuck yes, I got the culture with a typeset. Thanks, CR.

Check time:

Tsukishima Jinbei is here to save you. [Okay!]

Insect Magistrate Officer is here to save you. [Bzzt!]

Fixed: The Insect Magistrate Officer, Tsukishima Jinbei, is here to save you.

You gotta get the grammar right here. So long as it works, it… works.

I’d personally go with something like “From the Insect Magistrate Office, I, Tsukishima Jinbei, am here to save you.” but when I add suggestions to my reviews, I try to match whatever shitfuck style the script went with. It’s more important to me that I let you know what’s wrong and offer some patch-fix alternative than I rewrite the entire script in a style that’s more similar to my own.

Dat grimace.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_11.42_[2013.06.06_12.32.53]

It’s like he understands the pure rage I feel whenever I watch subtitles. Mugai-dono the besto.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_09.25_[2013.06.06_12.28.23]

Goddammit I wish this show was more popular so we’d get some cosplay from it.

[HorribleSubs] Mushibugyo - 05 [1080p].mkv_snapshot_23.05_[2013.06.06_12.56.07]

And for cosplay on the male end… Look at that inbred mouth. Republican congoers would have a field day.

  1. I’m actually enjoying this show quite a bit.
A lot of it has to do with how ridiculous the character designs get and how crazy shonen it is.

  2. How long has it been since the last review. BTW, there’s only like 2 weeks left in this season… Ganbatte! \(◕‿◕✿)/

  3. Love it when you get so ironic. “Good fucking thing no one has ever wondered these things. Top-tier professional standards as always from the American Anime Industry.” etc etc

  4. Disregarding what the company is not allowed to translate due to licensing (lol?), I don’t understand why they can’t put some effort into typesetting. I can’t imagine them being short on manpower; they should be able to task someone to make the subtitles look nice.

    • I would just like to add that it is understandable that there would be limits on what the can do. For example, replacing the Japanese text completely like we’ve seen some groups do with letters or written notes. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t at least reasonably match the font (they probably need to get a license for that too, lol.. The world of licensing).

      • IIRC a CR employee once explained on Whiners (RIP) that they would need to either (a) license the fonts or (b) hire someone to design them, and both would be a (significant?) investment…

      • I’d imagine a huge problem is, as mentioned above, the player. I’m not sure what they use to render their subs, but I’m quite certain it doesn’t support all the nice ASS tags like VSFilter or libass.

    • From what I’ve read, it’s due to limitations of the player. I think most streaming sites suffer with it, but I don’t know the details.

        • If shows were hardsubbed then you wouldn’t be able to toggle the subtitles (this would probably piss off all the ‘weebs’ who would be completely appalled with English text covering, or being beside, their precious kanji/whatever the symbols are called).

In regard to being a limitation of the player, just create a new player that supports the subtitles. Honestly, I really doubt it would influence whether or not they implement typesetting.
