Opening. Superb color choices. The font feels a bit bland, but I guess it can’t be helped.

Rating: Good.

[Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_23.17_[2013.06.27_00.15.15] [Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_23.24_[2013.06.27_00.15.26]

Ending. Frame-perfect color choices marred only by the pseudo-cursive font. When the fuck is cursive ever a good idea?

Rating: Okay+.

Not bad!

Commie’s first (with a square border you totally can’t see) and the original Japanese translation of the title right after.

The entire chalkboard section would take up too many screens, so lemme just boil it down to: sometimes it’s typeset, sometimes it’s not, and sometimes the text obscures the typesetting.

[Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_04.38_[2013.06.26_13.56.16]

Oh, wow. That’s… Well at least it’s…

Hm. Well.

Looking kind of Soul Eater there, binchou-tan.

This board features prominently in quite a few scenes, but it’s never typeset.

[Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_06.06_[2013.06.26_14.03.59]

What, did you guys forget what the room was called?

Some of the positions are typeset.

…others are not.

Sometimes it’s typeset and sometimes it’s not. (Noticing a pattern here?)

[Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_14.55_[2013.06.26_14.32.45] [Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_21.49_[2013.06.26_14.58.16]

Really? These were too hard to typeset?

[Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_17.18_[2013.06.26_14.42.36] [Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_17.31_[2013.06.26_14.45.12] [Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_20.48_[2013.06.26_14.51.36]

Maybe I should have reviewed Commie’s 09 so they could have gotten passes for not typesetting that stupid festival shit like the other groups got. Oh well, I’ll throw them bonus points to allay the pain of my snark.

You tell me if Commie’s sentence is an appropriate length for the line.

Actually, don’t tell me. I already know; it’s not.

[Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_05.11_[2013.06.26_21.47.50]

Yes, we were able to infer that by the “was”. Oh don’t get so sour, Commie, I’m not dinging ya for this. Just try a little more specificity next time. Like, “a few years ago”.

Actually, we know exactly when it was, since this girl was in high school at the same time Yukinon’s sis was. And Yukinon’s sis graduated school three years ago.

So the only possible time they could have been together (since Japan only has three grades in their high school) was when the speaker was a freshman and Yukinon’s sis was a senior. So, exactly three years ago.

Detective_Sage solves every goddamn case.

Don’t use words you’re unfamiliar with. “gawsh” isn’t a word — it’s “gosh”.

Get made all you want. Spelling mistakes aren’t perfectly acceptable variants of words even if they can be found in logs of AOL chats from 10 years ago.

That’s not how you grammarify “like”. Please get native English speakers to edit.

“So, like,”

And what exactly did she hear? If you’re gonna have a poorly written incomplete sentence, trail it off with ellipses or something.

What in the blue ball blazes is a local award?

So quirky and hilarious, much like le random sporks. Great job, Commie.

She’s being incredibly sarcastic here. She’s cutting into Minami because she arrived late, not because she went “to class”. That would be stupid.

What you want is what Crunchyroll had. “So the ___ was late because she was checking on her class, eh?”

There’s a difference. You’d know that if you had ever gone to class yourself.

[Commie] Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru - My Teenage RomCom SNAFU - 10 [48865042].mkv_snapshot_15.53_[2013.06.26_14.35.59]

I’ve been watching the entirety of the show with the HorribleSubs release because I don’t trust fansubbers to not fuck shit up, so seeing “Yahello~” reduced to this is… kind of disappointing.

Considering the point of “yahello~” is to be a cute, stupid greeting, “Yo, ‘sup” doesn’t even come close. I mean, fuck, I use that all the time. And while I may be cute, I’m kinda pushing the boundaries of genius.

Due to my superior intellect, I’m afraid this must be labeled a bad localization attempt.

(Even Commie’s staff aren’t on board: Dialogue: 0,0:15:53.15,0:15:54.39,Default,,0,0,0,,Yo, ‘sup!{wat})

There’s no value in including “even” in this sentence. In fact, it only hurts the point he’s trying to make by making it seem like her working by herself isn’t the most important part when it is.

The whole scene is mishandled in Commie’s version, actually. Compare the next section:

Crunchyroll:

Perhaps depending on others is important,
but depending on others is the only thing people here want to do.
More specifically, I mean... um...
Right, like people who dump their work onto me.
I don't get to take it easy, and that can't be helped, but...
I won't allow anyone other than me to take it easy.

Commie:

I’m sure relying on others is important, like you said.
I mean, everyone here wants to rely on someone else with all they’ve got.
Specifically, I mean, uh…
Yeah, the people who offload their work on to me.
In the situation we’re in, I obviously can’t take it easy and relax,
but I {\i1}also{\i0} can’t stand by and watch someone else relax either.

Yes, CR had a lazy “it can’t be helped”, but I actually understood what was going on in their version. Commie’s translation is just too muddled in itself to get the point across.

Oh god, toothbrush scene.

Also, wrong. It would be “Bro sounds like he’s tired.” or “Bro almost sounds like he’s tired.”

I’d just stick with FFF’s releases for this show. Their 09 release, though unedited, was on par with this script, and had slightly better visuals. And you can at least trust that FFF’s not going to add in those hilarious reddit memes to their releases.

That or you can just watch the Crunchyroll versions like I’m going to do right now. So close to the end that I gotta finish the show off (let’s pretend that 12’s not delaycasted for another 10 hours).

Actually, I wish people used “Omigawd” and its variants more.

    • You’ll get that shit all the time in Commie’s subs. They just do it to regular text rather than attack titles.

      • Why the hate for subtitle effects?

I agree with you, THAT one in particular was pretty ugly and out of place, but I love using {\move} with abrupt camera pans when it fits organically. Same story for alpha-timing the end of a line to sync text appearance with dialogue syllabic emphasis, and other emphasis techniques. I think it adds a nice extra touch if done right.

Commie did this well in a number of shows like JoJo, Sekai is doing it for Nyarlko W BDs, etc… I think it’s a natural evolution of the ‘attack effects’ from the hardsub days.

        Reply
        • Yeah, I think the subtitle effects they did for Jojo were good. They did it in a way that really suited that show.

However, I think they went a little overboard with it in this instance.

          Reply
          • I thought commie does those effects in nyarlko W too. (Pretty sure sekai is using them as a base unless they’re putting the effects in themselves). Actually now that I think about it, isn’t this the same guy who put those effects in their mondaiji release?

  2. Since it sounds like you’ve been watching it all, what do you think about how FFF handled all of the fujoshi’s BL outbursts in previous episodes? I don’t have screen caps on me, but they used some pretty interesting donut metaphors which caused a big stir about ‘troll subs’ and whatnot a month or so ago.
