[Commie/WhyNot] Saint Young Men – 01 (DVD)

This post was written by Calyrica. She is not Dark_Sage.

I often miss out on OVAs when they come out, so I love that I got the chance to start this one. Super funny. But who tackled it the best?

First thing I have to mention is that there are no karaoke-able songs. The ED is an instrumental. That means no WhyNot rainbows!

Second thing is that Commie went 576p where WhyNot went 480p. From what I, someone who does not encode, understand, DVDs are 480p, so Commie upscaled. Someone wanna tell me what the deal is?

So like there’s this thing I do where I delete files when I think I’m done with them even if I might not be and I empty the trash immediately following. So now that I look at this, I’m not entirely sure whether this was typeset or in the source. And to make matters worse, I forgot to get a screencap of it in WhyNot’s release.

Every single time this popped up (which was like once a minute), it was never typeset.

Script

[Commie] Saint Young Men OVA - 01 [DVD 576p AAC] [CBF535E4].mkv_snapshot_00.23_[2013.07.05_13.17.37]

Awkward phrasing, or did they miss a word?

Their purpose was to save people who had been led astray.

[Commie] Saint Young Men OVA - 01 [DVD 576p AAC] [CBF535E4].mkv_snapshot_00.50_[2013.07.05_13.18.14]

Passive voice chunkiness.

Someone existed whose words even those two feared.

[Commie] Saint Young Men OVA - 01 [DVD 576p AAC] [CBF535E4].mkv_snapshot_01.56_[2013.07.05_13.19.30]

First, I wanna know what the shirts say.

Second, that line is way too formal. It’s a landlady to her clients, not the other way around!

Are you two going to work dressed like that?

[Commie] Saint Young Men OVA - 01 [DVD 576p AAC] [CBF535E4].mkv_snapshot_04.03_[2013.07.05_13.21.39]

This is the translation of a joke. I don’t get it.

[Commie] Saint Young Men OVA - 01 [DVD 576p AAC] [CBF535E4].mkv_snapshot_15.39_[2013.07.05_13.35.40]

Oh, ouch. This line is painful to read. “Themself”? Really?

Well, like anyone in your position, you need to understand yourself.

Overall thoughts: While there weren’t any major English problems, some of the jokes didn’t come off well, and they missed over 3/4 of the typesetting.

WhyNot

Typesetting

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_01.07_[2013.07.05_14.03.29]

90% of the time, they typeset this. Thank you!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_01.26_[2013.07.05_14.04.33]

Not as well done as Commie’s, but I’ll forgive them, since…

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_01.29_[2013.07.05_14.04.24]

Wooooooooot!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_01.58_[2013.07.05_14.05.15]

Missing the typesetting. Compare this line to Commie’s above, though. I think this comes off a lot better.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_04.51_[2013.07.05_14.08.41]

Typesetting exists!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_05.36_[2013.07.05_14.09.31]

This could have been placed a bit higher, but it’s there.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_06.17_[2013.07.05_14.10.14]

I didn’t screencap Commie’s, but they skipped it.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_07.30_[2013.07.05_14.11.31]

Every time!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_08.05_[2013.07.05_14.12.18]

Typesetting!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_08.29_[2013.07.05_14.12.44]

The first missing sign I noticed in WhyNot’s release.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_08.41_[2013.07.05_14.13.13]

And the second. This one is actually super super funny, since:

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_09.18_[2013.07.05_14.14.05]

It’s typeset once cut in half.

I don’t get it.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_13.25_[2013.07.05_14.27.02]

It may seem at first like this isn’t typeset, because…

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_13.26_[2013.07.05_14.27.28]

They saved it for this screen.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_17.35_[2013.07.05_14.39.24]

Some of the shirts are typeset! Nice!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_18.31_[2013.07.05_14.40.31]

And more of them! They’re all little jokes, so I appreciate it. Thank you, WhyNot!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_19.08_[2013.07.05_14.42.38]

This felt pretty important, so I was kind of confused Commie skipped it. But WhyNot did it, and it makes me giggle.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_17.56_[2013.07.05_14.39.53]

Another shirt typeset! Also am I the only person who thinks the “at home” is redundant? Though he is referring to that Buddha’s hobby is his work, so…

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_23.56_[2013.07.05_14.47.46]

Last sign of the episode!

Script

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_00.52_[2013.07.05_14.03.11]

This is long and clunky. I’d recommend what I suggested for Commie, but if you had to go with this wording, I’d scoot “existed” waaay earlier.

A person existed who was capable of uttering words that could instill fear even in them.

But it’s still long and clunky. Just not as clunky.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_01.14_[2013.07.05_14.03.59]

The way the previous part of the line was written, the “over it” is not necessary, and creates a comma splice. It was something like, “This is the Matsuda Apartments, where…”

That’s not it btw. But you get the idea.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_02.11_[2013.07.05_14.05.30]

What’s asceticism? Commie just used “reciting sutras” or something.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_02.58_[2013.07.05_14.06.19]

Ouch. Clunky.

Strange rumors are floating around about them.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_04.02_[2013.07.05_14.07.50]

This is how WhyNot treated the joke. The “ping-pong” is literally said, btw. I don’t get it, but the alien thing kind of makes more sense?

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_04.58_[2013.07.05_14.08.51]

Original wording is awkward.

You don’t need to go so far as to pay in advance.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_09.10_[2013.07.05_14.13.51]

This was treated SUPER WELL. Commie used “hand power” instead of “slight of the hand”.

Although, to be honest, guys… I think it’s just “sleight of hand”.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_10.06_[2013.07.05_14.15.18]

I believe you mean fruit, like you had for the next line.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_10.11_[2013.07.05_14.15.27]

Although I do understand if you wanted to differentiate a bit.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_11.32_[2013.07.05_14.21.53]

The “here” is redundant.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_13.19_[2013.07.05_14.26.54]

This is an appositive issue. We understand what it means because we’re used to it, but it’s still bad form.

When she says, “it’s”, the last noun she spoke to was “eyes”. So does “it’s blinding” refer to her eyes? No!

My eyes! I’m blind! I can’t see anything!

Okay, so it sounds shitty, but at least it’s grammatical, yo~!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_14.55_[2013.07.05_14.33.33]

Hometown is one word.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_16.20_[2013.07.05_14.35.03]

Myriad = an infinitely great number.

Unless you’re telling me that Japan is literally an infinite amount of gods, I think you messed up.

Huh?! D-Doesn’t that place house a myriad of gods?!
Huh?! I-Isn’t that place home to a myriad of gods?!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_17.27_[2013.07.05_14.37.12]

This is my personal nitpick, but I think this is awkward. Forgive me.

coming -> to come.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_17.29_[2013.07.05_14.36.40]

This is another appositive issue. The rice has four seasons?! Wow! I had no idea!

It has delicious rice and four seasons too.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_17.38_[2013.07.05_14.39.30]

I suppose this is correct, but I think it would sound better inverted.

Hanging up the laundry indoors is getting troublesome.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_17.47_[2013.07.05_14.39.41]

This is long and clunky and could use some improvements.

There’s nothing else left, since the ventilation fan and sink are already sparkly clean.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_18.38_[2013.07.05_14.40.41]

While correct, this would sound better as:

I wouldn’t suspect you of it, -> I’m not suspecting you of anything,

Also~ Shirt typesetting!

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_21.54_[2013.07.05_14.45.41]

Having “Buddha” twice in this line is a bit poor to read, even if it is the correct translation. Get rid of one of them.

[WhyNot] Saint☆Young Men [DVD 480p AAC][CCF5ADCC].mkv_snapshot_24.24_[2013.07.05_14.48.16]

Her name is Mary. Just because they say “Maria” in Japanese doesn’t mean that’s what it is. I mean, you didn’t write Yesu for Jesus or anything, so what gives?

Overall thoughts: Bunch of typesetting omg. They handled the jokes better, but was lacking a bit in the grammar department.

tl;dr: WhyNot was better in terms of being able to enjoy the show, so go with them. Commie’s script may have been more grammatically sound, but the jokes fell flat sometimes and they missed too much typesetting.

  1. I really like Saint Young Men. The manga makes me laugh harder than it should, probably, and I enjoyed the first ova. Can’t wait for the second ova and the movie.

  2. Pretty sure you’re correct on the resolution, Calyrica. From what I understand, DVDs should be anamorphic 853×480. As long as they aren’t PAL DVDs. PAL DVDs should be 576p. That’s what I was taught.

      • BONES masters are 1024×576, but that’s not true of all of the other studios. JC Staff, for example, is usually 1280×720.

        >Maybe they upscaled so it could fit nicely in the master race european DVD players.
DVD players can’t handle H264 10bit, and PAL is 25fps (and due to the different frame rate, it causes many a problems with anime DVDs), so that’s definitely not why they encoded it at 576p.

        Reply
      • Even if the master were 576p, the DVD would be authored at a lower resolution and blotting out detail that upscaling again won’t bring back.

        And lol anamorphic 853×480

        • So what I’m getting is that Commie for sure upscaled?

Is there any reason for doing this?

I also think it’s funny they even with the higher resolution, they still have a smaller filesize. I know there are a number of reasons for that, and the less typesetting is a bit of a factor (shorter script, less fonts attached, etc), but that wouldn’t be nearly enough to offset the added bytes form the higher resolution, too.

          Reply
          • Maybe they bought a PAL DVD of Saint Oniisan?

I don’t know, but I have to guess that there’s some reason they did. They’re not the only ones to have released 576p DVD rips and they can’t just be pulling the number 576 out of their asses.

          • >So what I’m getting is that Commie for sure upscaled?
            Yes. NTSC DVDs are 720×480.

            >Is there any reason for doing this?
Not entirely sure. I heard that it has something to do with… the colors? or something.

Plus, this isn’t the first time they’ve done this. They upscaled the DVD OVA for Another and some other show that I can’t recall at the moment.

            >filesize
Commie tends to encode at a higher CRF, resulting in smaller file sizes, but slightly less quality.

            Reply
          • Technically they’re both upscaled. The source is 720×480. You might as well stick to the original resolution and get 16:9 on the .mkv container. There’s no real benefit to it, other than ‘showing off’ with your upscale. But I guess only this 480p raw is out.

Some might still prefer an upscale combined with encoding filters.. but that’s a different story.
