Visual Review

Karaoke.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_01.19_[2013.09.08_19.35.00] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_01.51_[2013.09.08_19.35.41]

Opening. The karaoke often hits the credits. I realize there’s only so far you can push the subs out, but I’m pretty sure you could have positioned them to avoid it here. It was suitable otherwise, though.

Rating: Okay+.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_21.57_[2013.09.08_19.29.42] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_22.06_[2013.09.08_19.29.56]

Ending. If you check the outlines, UTW matches both their color and movement with the karaoke. And it’s sugoi.

The karaoke is screwed up at 22:28 (the outline appears static, which is quite annoying), but that’s not enough to pull away from what is an otherwise excellent visual offering.

Rating: Great.

Typesetting.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_01.06_[2013.09.08_19.34.42]

The only typeset added here was the group name. You know, just in case you forget whose subs you’re watching. And those subs are UTW’s. You know, the greatest group in the world because they sometimes sub popular things quickly.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_02.25_[2013.09.08_19.36.21]

The generally accepted transcription is “harakiri”, not “harikiri”. But I’ll let it slide.

Script Review

Main Script.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_00.07_[2013.09.08_19.21.54] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_00.20_[2013.09.08_19.22.14]

Interesting way to abbreviate influenza. Unfortunately, by using only one apostrophe of omission here, you are omitting the notice of omission of the second part of the phrase (“in” is shown to be missing with the apostrophe, but there is nothing to indicate “enza” is gone). So to fit the logic, you’d need to make this ‘flu’.

Of course, then you’d be faced with it appearing like you quoted the term with single quotation marks, which is obviously not what you intended. I’m sure you can see the pitfalls of this going beyond this one scenario. What if you wanted to quote just the word? Then you could end up with “‘flu'”. Yuck.

It is for these reasons (and the excuse of common use) that influenza is shortened to simply “flu”, ala telephone->phone or laboratory->lab.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_00.25_[2013.09.08_19.22.27]

can -> could

Come on, Raze. Use your donation money and buy yourself a fucking book or something. Even JK Rowling knows her tenses.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_02.55_[2013.09.08_20.02.08]

does

And you were so good about accents earlier in the episode…

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_03.06_[2013.09.08_20.02.37]

What do you mean “be having”? Why would you tense it like that?

“I dunno if you should have such a mature outlook on life at your age.”

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_04.03_[2013.09.08_20.04.04]

Em-dashes are quite useful when it comes to scripts (and writing in general), but they’re not colon substitutes.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_04.55_[2013.09.10_20.38.29] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_04.57_[2013.09.10_20.38.36] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_05.01_[2013.09.10_20.38.44] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_05.05_[2013.09.10_20.38.51]

Do you feel unwell?

  • Yeah
  • I feel okay now

Choose one.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_05.59_[2013.09.10_11.27.38]

What the fuck is this? It reads like a generitranslation. But as far as I can tell, the line it came from wasn’t throwing out “ii desu ne”s like they were unwanted children.

So I’m a bit confused as to how this got to be so bad. Active effort?

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_06.58_[2013.09.10_11.29.30] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_07.01_[2013.09.10_11.29.37]

Trying not hate you. It’s harding. :(

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_07.20_[2013.09.10_11.30.00]

UTW

HorribleSubs had “latent” rather than potential. HorribleSubs was right.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_07.58_[2013.09.10_20.42.34]

“Would”? Why did you throw the line in past tense when Luvia is currently providing for Miyu?

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_08.51_[2013.09.10_11.35.59]

You can’t just throw -tier out in scripts like it’ll magically fit. Take a page from Crunchyroll’s book and write like a human for once.

“The battle was so intense, there was no room for us to interfere.”

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_09.36_[2013.09.10_11.37.09] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_09.41_[2013.09.10_11.37.19] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_09.43_[2013.09.10_11.37.25]

Tell me how cards containing “such power” relates to how they were meant to be used. That’s like trying to explain how to fly a plane by describing its features.

“Yeah, the wings are painted blue. Try to avoid towers.”

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_10.23_[2013.09.10_20.45.48] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_10.26_[2013.09.10_20.45.55]

You meant “job description”. “line of work” is completely different.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_11.35_[2013.09.10_20.48.13] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_11.37_[2013.09.10_20.48.20]

Why would you do that?

“Why would I do that?”

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_12.24_[2013.09.10_11.41.05] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_12.27_[2013.09.10_11.41.12] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_12.30_[2013.09.10_11.41.19] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_12.32_[2013.09.10_11.40.46] [UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_12.34_[2013.09.10_11.40.53]

A bad one.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_14.20_[2013.09.10_20.50.52]

If only there were a word one could use for a length that spans in all directions from a given point.

Fuck, if anyone figures one out, lemme know. That would really be a useful term.

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_15.41_[2013.09.10_15.14.46]

It still counts as laughter even if you start crying, right?

[UTW]_Fate_Kaleid_Liner_Prisma_Ilya_-_07_[h264-720p][B18C63A8].mkv_snapshot_18.23_[2013.09.10_15.17.42]

from->with

She’s trying to say that she only made one simple mistake (not dodging the first knife) and that’s what led them to the situation they’re in.

“in the first place” is a very important descriptor to add to the end of that last sentence.

If all you care about is script quality, you probably don’t like fansubs very much. Sorry my fellows suck so much.

For this show, you’re screwed whichever way you go, so I suggest you go with the first to release. But if you’ve got nothing but time, UTW is the way to go, just because they have pretty karaoke.

  1. This script is definitely in a very bad shape, but I’m not sure about that “should have” vs. “should be having” issue.
I think that “should be having” works here ’cause it’s about “what should already be happening” (at her age) and not about “what should happen”.(from now on) As in: “You should be exercising more.” vs. “You should exercise more.” Thoughts?

Btw, could it be that this show sucks so much that none of their editors wanted to work on it? :>

    • I’d use the latter in that scenario as well. I mean, you can say the former, but there’s rarely any reason to unless it’s something they’re meant to be doing right now, like “Switch off the TV! You should be cleaning your room!”
