I tend to love reviews with only one group subbing a show. Usually makes the recommendation so much easier. In this case? Doesn’t matter because the show sucks musty dog balls and you shouldn’t watch it.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_00.51_[2013.10.23_13.45.38] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_01.03_[2013.10.23_13.44.56]

Opening. The majority of it is hardsubbed Engrish thanks to Satelight. Three lines are in Japanese, so Commie… well, at least they subbed it. We’ll give them that.

Rating: Okay.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_22.48_[2013.10.23_13.46.31] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_23.57_[2013.10.23_13.47.58]

Ending. Three different fonts, three different blues. Yeah, that’s exactly what I wanted.

Rating: Okay-.

What about “SAO ripoff” made you think this show wouldn’t have a bunch of typesetting? Come on guys, you make your bed, you lie in it. Half-assing it ain’t doing anybody any favors.

Script Review

Main Script.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_00.13_[2013.10.23_16.56.18]

Except it is still a game. Just one they’re trapped in.

Jesus, I’m in for a bundle of subs trapped in a glass case of retardation, aren’t I?

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_02.34_[2013.10.23_14.28.20] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_02.37_[2013.10.23_14.28.28]

You’d want “Even so” here instead of “Even then”. You know, like the Crunchyroll script had before you fucktards edited it away.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_04.57_[2013.10.23_22.06.45] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_05.00_[2013.10.23_22.06.51] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_05.04_[2013.10.23_22.06.59]

Are you even aware what “even” means? This script says that the food is burnt regardless of whether or not it’s been burned. That makes no sense.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_05.14_[2013.10.23_14.32.04]

You mean ingredients.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_08.20_[2013.10.23_14.36.56]

You mean items.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_08.05_[2013.10.23_16.15.36]

Original: You think you People of the Land can take our money?!

Yup, another bad edit. The bandits are talking directly to the “People of the Land” here.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_09.20_[2013.10.23_14.38.35] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_09.23_[2013.10.23_14.38.42]

What do you mean, “Guess not”? There’s no guessing; he was the one who just fucking talked to her.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_10.02_[2013.10.23_22.20.39] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_10.07_[2013.10.23_22.20.47]

~_~

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_12.56_[2013.10.23_14.45.07]

CR had it as “Typhon”, which is not a misspelling of “Typhoon”. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Typhon

And yes, Typhon items exist in games. http://www.mapletip.com/etc-items/Typhon%20Feather/4032005

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_13.04_[2013.10.23_16.27.59]

Why did you change this from CR’s “could”? You are aware that “could” is the polite way to ask questions of someone, right? So what contextual basis did you have for editing this into “can”?

This isn’t a huge issue but it’s a perfect example why low-tier ESLs should never be allowed to edit scripts. Without a native understanding of the language, you will fuck shit like this up because you simply don’t understand what it is you’re doing.

(Note that if you’re ESL and you have a native understanding of English, this doesn’t apply to you. Thanks for not ruining my subs.)

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_13.31_[2013.10.23_22.23.16] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_13.35_[2013.10.23_22.23.24]

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_13.38_[2013.10.23_16.35.08]

CR: Naotsugu, don’t say that stuff in front of the ladies.

I guess CR’s use of “the ladies” was too much for Commie too handle.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_14.25_[2013.10.23_16.36.17]

CR: Thank the shrimp.

I don’t think Commie understands that “shrimp” is a derogatory term for a small person. But at least they didn’t edit this into “crawfish” or something.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_15.21_[2013.10.23_14.48.11] [Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_15.26_[2013.10.23_14.47.51]

CR: My subclass is scribe, after all.

How do you get from that to “I’m also a scribe, after all.”?

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_18.20_[2013.10.23_14.51.22]

They’re not “fighting in real life”; they’re “fighting for real”. Yes, there’s a marked difference considering the show is fucking set in virtual reality.

[Commie] Log Horizon - 03 [C10427E7].mkv_snapshot_20.46_[2013.10.23_14.54.21]

What does this even mean?

It’s Commie, so have some cat puns

(that weren’t in the Crunchyroll script)

Spoiler:

Now, normally I’d just give a blanket recommendation to Commie here, but since they made the script worse in quite a few places, I’m gonna suggest HorribleSubs as the safest option to go with for this show.

Fansubbing truly is the greatest scene, isn’t it?

        • Sword Art Online was a virtual reality MMO that players were forced into playing. Elder Tale was a typical keyboard+mouse MMO, and players of it inexplicably woke up as their avatars in a world just like, but distinct from, the one in the game.

          • Everything you say is indeed as it is in the anime, which keeps alluding to these things, including all the mentions of the UI. But they are indeed easing us in, and the sense of disorientation and confusion DS is displaying seems something they are actively aiming for.

          • I thought that they mentioned about not having the minimap, bird-eye view 360 degrees vision(?) together with the bit about them being at the level cap 90 and still has to readjust to fighting with mob 60 lv below them back in ep1 clearly show that Elder Tale was never a virtual reality game.

Thy got transported to the world of Elder Tales. There was never any VR, Elder Tales was your typical keyboard and mouse MMORPG. It’s intentionally made obscure because, unlike other series where it’s just used as a setting, the game thing is used as both a plot device and a mystery that the characters must solve.

Honestly I’m more bothered by the fact that you didn’t mention CR’s (and Commie’s since they’re just an edit) questionable translation choices. They’re too simplified and filled with so much scriptwriting that they either barely get the meaning across or imply a completely different meaning.

            • INCOMING LN SPOILERS HOPEFULLY TAGS WORK IF NOT GG.

              Spoiler:
They basically got transported to another world that is pretty much a copy of Elder Tales, just with game stats. All the npcs are real people and so forth and so forth. Everything about the world is real except for their bodies which are just video-game enhanced.

              • Great! Do the main characters know this when they speak AND accept it as their reality instead of just another world AND do they recognize it as being completely independent of anything resembling a game?

If so, I will amend my critique.

                  • I would run that sentence as “When Elder Tale was just a game” like I would have run the sentence in question in this review. I think that would handle it better.

                    • But it’s between Coomie and Horriblesubs right? You really shouldn’t point one out when CR does the same and then go “oh I still recommend Horriblesubs over this”

That and you’ve been told numerous time they don’t think it’s just a game anymore. You may think it’s a game, and just because you watched SAO doesn’t mean the characters are thinking the same way you are. (Unless you’re translating it and they’re saying otherwise)

                • At 03:31 they talk about how it looks different from when they saw it on a monitor. It’s pretty clear they’re trapped in another world and in the preceding two episodes Shiroe explicitly says it isnt a game a anymore several times. But its amusing how you pridefully stick to your guns despite the large amount of evidence to the contrary.

I mean at 3:40 one of them talks about how “It wasn’t like this in the game.” which clearly differentiates their current existence from when they used to play the game.

Next time, you should actually understand the plot before writing a review.

  3. Oyatsu was supposed to be translating this too, but supposedly the massive typesetting in the first ep has them stalled. If they ever start releasing, there could be an alternative.

    • I’m hoping their script is worthwhile, though apparently the typesetting will be v0 quality since their normal typesetter wasn’t available to pretty it up.

  4. >This should be “flavor”. Taste is a sense.

Except “having no taste” is an idiomatic expression which, while it may not accurately describe the difference between taste and flavour, is definitely widely-used in many English-speaking countries.

Tapped into Google, the phrase “has no taste” brings about 8.5 mill hits. While obv that includes phrases like “D_S has no taste in wallpaper”, a lot of the hits are things like “air has no taste, water has no taste.”

I’d imagine you’ve probably used the phrase yourself too, D_S.

    • In this scene, “flavor” is the better term to use. And yes, I know the fucking phrase. Why do you think I said “Taste is a sense. Though I suppose that may confuse you since you don’t have any.” (It was play off both taste and sense, though I guess the “taste” bit wasn’t as witty.)

      Reply
      • I’m not sure if that was agreeing with me or not.

“It has no taste” = “It has no flavor”. The first is just more idiomatic than the second, but in conversation, both are perfectly valid and therefore not even worth remarking on. Whether one is “better” than the other is only an opinion as both phrases have pros and cons.

        • When complaining about food it’s more common to complain about a lack of flavor than taste. “This lacks taste.” ain’t as good as “This lacks flavor.”

          Reply
          • Maybe if you’re a food/wine critic and yes, it’s the more technically correct way of saying it, but your average anime viewer would probably use taste there too.

            Look at it this way:

            >Pepsi Max’s current slogan in the US is “Maximum taste. Zero calories.”

They use taste in the same way (because they’re using it to mean flavor. You can’t max out a sense. You wouldn’t say “Maximum nose!”) and they’re a multi-billion dollar company who employ people and throw money at them purely to make up taglines.

I’m not saying that you should put taste instead of flavor (as I say, flavor is the more grammatical choice), but I certainly wouldn’t suggest it’s wrong.

                • “Taste is the general word… Flavor is a characteristic taste, usually of a pleasing kind, and as of some ingredient put into the food…” from your link probably illustrates the point better?

“Has no flavor” sounds more like “This doesn’t have anything that tastes good in it”. “Has no taste” seems to evoke “If I close my eyes and eat it, I’ll have no idea what it is”, which seems to be more the case here. If I boil a h

    • Disqualified means they didn’t even put in enough effort to earn my disdain. Here, Commie tried and failed. But at least they tried.

CR had the better script, which is why I said at the end of the review to go with them for this show.

  5. A couple of years ago, I would never have thought I’d end up with downloads of over half the season’s shows from Horrible Subs, which is exactly my position right now. It’s a sad world when the only groups which bother with releasing a better encode and/or improved typesetting are also completely fucking incapable when it comes to the scripts.
