Goddamn, this show is fantastic. Think FLCL, except you won’t need to pump your stomach to get the fail out of your body after watching it.

Translation Party House Rules:

Spoiler:
1. Translation Parties are intended to help you make the best subtitle choice for a given anime. Choose which line(s) you liked best by selecting them with the checkbox.

2. I split the Party into two parts — Essential and Extended. Assuming you want to get this shit over with quickly, just go with the Essential choices. I picked these to be the most representative lines in the releases. But if you’re one of those people who want more comparisons to help you come to a decision, go with the Essential choices and the Extended ones.

3. If you didn’t like any of the lines, choose the “N/A” option. The results for “N/A” won’t be automatically tabulated, so you’ll have to do the math in your head. Have my gomens and nasais.

4. A “>” indicates that another character has begun speaking. If there are three characters in a line comparison, I will indicate the third with a “>>” and so on for more characters.

5. Group order is randomized for each screenshot, every time you refresh the page. However, the “N/A” option will always appear at the bottom of the screen.

6. Your results will be summed up when you click the “Get your results” button. Feel free to vote in the poll at the end/post in the comments to let others know how you did and to compare your results with them.

7. Party hard.

Anime-Koi :: So… this place got a name or what?
This land.
I’m asking which parallel dimension this is.
What, you a mute or somethin’?

Commie :: Hey, what’s this place called?
Come on!
I’m asking which plane this is!
What, are you mute?

EveTaku :: So yeah, what’s this place called?
Our location!
What number worldline is this?
What, you mute or something?

Essential 10.

Anime-Koi :: Kyoto.
The Mirrored City.
I don’t know anything about any parallel dimension.
>Oh?
This place has been off limits to regular folks for hundreds of years.
This is no place for some random kid to go play around on their own.

Commie :: Kyoto.
You write it “Mirror Capital” and read it Kyoto.
I don’t know what planes you’re talking about.
No one’s been admitted into this place for centuries.
It’s not the place for a little kid without her guardian.

EveTaku :: Kyoto.
The Capital Beyond the Looking-Glass, Kyoto.
I have no clue what these world-whatevers you’re talking about are.
>Really?
This place has been out-of-bounds to normal folk for centuries.
It’s not a place some unsupervised kid can just randomly waltz into.

N/A :: N/A. They all suck.

Decision Point:

  1. Holy fucking shit, Dark_Sage. Give me more comparisons. I fucking live for this! (Put the knife down and click the spoiler. We got ten more comparisons for ya.)
  2. Oh my god, put a bullet in my head. When is this shit gonna be over with already? (You’ve seen enough for one lifetime. Head down to the results.)

Spoiler:

Expanded 1.

Koto’s reaction after an unbearably pretentious opening to the show.

Anime-Koi :: Our resident poet strikes again.
You talk about it all the time,
but is there really a place like that?
Are you sure you weren’t just dreaming, Sensei?

Commie :: You’re such a poet.
That was a lot of words,
but aren’t you making that place up?
Or maybe you were dreaming, master.

EveTaku :: Ever the poet, aren’t you?
You’re always talking about it, but does that place even exist?
Are you sure the {\i1}whole{\i0} thing wasn’t a dream, Sensei?

N/A :: N/A. They all suck.

Expanded 2.

And after drawing it, he fucked it. For those of you who haven’t seen the show yet, I’m not joking.

Anime-Koi :: He drew this black rabbit, which he named “Koto,” on a sliding door,
portraying it as a deity of the city.

Commie :: He had named the black rabbit Koto.
He had drawn it on a whim as the capital’s god.

EveTaku :: This black rabbit, whom he named Koto,
had been painted on a flight of fancy to be the god of the city on the panel walls.

N/A :: N/A. They all suck.

Expanded 3.

Blind kid positing his existence isn’t necessary. I agree, but leave Bright Eyes outta this.

Audio: [mp3t track="http://www.crymore.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/KyousougigaE03.mp3" play="Start audio" stop="Pause this shit" volslider="y"]

Anime-Koi :: I’ve thought about this,
but won’t everything be fine if Yase and I go back to being drawings?
After all, Yakushimaru’s human to begin with.
You’ll be able to figure something out with only Mom to worry about, right?
You can erase our drawings and remake us.
You can do that, right?

Commie :: I’ve been thinking that Yase and I could just go back to being drawings.
Yakushimaru’s a human anyway, and if only Mom is left otherwise, you should be able to sort it out.
Just erase our drawing and redo it.
You can do that, can’t you?

EveTaku :: I thought about it, and…
what if Yase and I just returned to being pictures?
Yakushimaru’s essentially human, and I’m sure they can put up with just Mom.
Erase us once, and then recreate us.
You have the power to do that, don’t you?

N/A :: N/A. They all suck.

Expanded 4.

Elder Myo is quite the thinker.

Anime-Koi :: Do we call the city over there “Magic Land”?
>You {\i1}do{\i0} have something in mind, don’t you?
>>Why don’t we just call the place over there “Kyoto” as well?

Commie :: What’s the name of that capital?
>It must have a name.
>>Let’s just say it’s Kyoto too.

EveTaku :: Is the capital on that side called “Kyo” too?
>{\i1}Something{\i0} ought to be different.
>>I think “Kyoto” works just as well for the other side.

N/A :: N/A. They all suck.

Expanded 5.

Anime-Koi :: Just like that, the whole family moved into the city’s mirror image,
and disappeared without anyone noticing.
The new city came under the management of Koto and Shounin,
and was given the name “Mirrored City,” or “Kyoto.”
It was a world where humans and supernatural beings lived in harmony.

Commie :: And thus the family moved to the other side of the looking glass,
and mankind did not see them again.
The monk and Koto ran the capital, and named it the Mirror Capital.
Humans and fantastic creatures lived there side-by-side.

EveTaku :: And thus the family moved to the capital beyond the looking-glass,
disappearing from this world without a trace.
The capital was governed by the high priest and Koto,
and came to be known as the Capital of Kyo.
There, man and spirit lived side-by-side.

N/A :: N/A. They all suck.

Expanded 6.

Anime-Koi :: How can you remember stuff from so long ago?
>There’s nothing forgettable about our memories.

Commie :: I’m surprised you still remember that.

EveTaku :: I can’t believe you remember something from so long ago.
>How could I ever forget a single moment I spent with you?

Anime-Koi :: It’s beautiful.
I’d just {\i1}love{\i0} to have something like that here.
Would anyone care to bring it over for me?

Commie :: So pretty.
I want a thunderstorm too.
Will someone bring me a thunderstorm?

How I would like to have one of my own.
Won’t somebody go and get one for me?

Our venerable monk Myoue is quite the troublemaker, isn’t he?

Commie :: Did you ditch the meeting again?
Being the head monk Myoe must be tough.

EveTaku :: Skipped another triumvirate meeting?

>Will you comfort me?
Do you {\i1}really{\i0} want me to?
>Yes, only you.
I bet that’s what you tell everyone, huh?

It really is tough, huh?

Am I good enough for that?
>Only you are.
Do you tell that all your girls?

This land.

Anime-Koi :: Kyoto.
The Mirrored City.
I don’t know anything about any parallel dimension.
>Oh?
This place has been off limits to regular folks for hundreds of years.
This is no place for some random kid to go play around on their own.

Commie :: Kyoto.
You write it “Mirror Capital” and read it Kyoto.
I don’t know what planes you’re talking about.
No one’s been admitted into this place for centuries.
It’s not the place for a little kid without her guardian.

EveTaku :: Kyoto.
The Capital Beyond the Looking-Glass, Kyoto.
I have no clue what these world-whatevers you’re talking about are.
>Really?
This place has been out-of-bounds to normal folk for centuries.
It’s not a place some unsupervised kid can just randomly waltz into.

Anime-Koi :: Our resident poet strikes again.
You talk about it all the time,
but is there really a place like that?
Are you sure you weren’t just dreaming, Sensei?

Commie :: You’re such a poet.
That was a lot of words,
but aren’t you making that place up?
Or maybe you were dreaming, master.

portraying it as a deity of the city.

Commie :: He had named the black rabbit Koto.
He had drawn it on a whim as the capital’s god.

EveTaku :: This black rabbit, whom he named Koto,
had been painted on a flight of fancy to be the god of the city on the panel walls.

but won’t everything be fine if Yase and I go back to being drawings?
After all, Yakushimaru’s human to begin with.
You’ll be able to figure something out with only Mom to worry about, right?
You can erase our drawings and remake us.
You can do that, right?

Commie :: I’ve been thinking that Yase and I could just go back to being drawings.
Yakushimaru’s a human anyway, and if only Mom is left otherwise, you should be able to sort it out.
Just erase our drawing and redo it.
You can do that, can’t you?

EveTaku :: I thought about it, and…
what if Yase and I just returned to being pictures?
Yakushimaru’s essentially human, and I’m sure they can put up with just Mom.

>You {\i1}do{\i0} have something in mind, don’t you?
>>Why don’t we just call the place over there “Kyoto” as well?

Commie :: What’s the name of that capital?

  1. With this kinda show I’m pretty sure the first thing you watch is gonna matter even more than it does in other TL Parties. Me, I watched EveTaku’s first and got:

  6. Lines like “What, you a mute or somethin'” are plain uncomfortable for me to read, dialogue or not, while lines like “Skipped another triumvirate meeting” don’t really feel like things someone might say in a conversation.

    Still, I’d go for the too-formal line over the slang every single time, characterization be damned. I guess it comes down to the fact that I’m reading (rather than hearing) the line in English.

    Surprising Commie was second best after I was unable to watch past the opening scene of their subs.

    EveTaku got the least [best] results but looking at the lines, they also got the least [wtf] results for me, so I might go with them.

    Watched raw (and will continue to do so), so I had no previous contact with any of the subs. 4 N/As. Most of the ties were between Anime-Koi and EveTaku, a lot of which I wished were actually a mixture of the two.

    Reply
  12. I had only watched this raw. A-Koi/EveTaku tied for me though commie had one or two nicely phrased, but really none of them were super satisfying given the underlying translation. While nothing horrible, each had a few choices that felt off in different places, for example Essential 2, “that’s cruel/that’s mean/yowch” does not translate into “touché/well played” so a-koi got that point, but then had stuff elsewhere. I’m sure someone with a better understanding then I would spot more issues then I can.

    Guess I’ll just flip a coin between those two, both seem alright. I wish one was the obvious, crushing winner, or for that matter that all of them were incredible and it was purely about phrasing but so it goes.

    • If Koto gets a playful jab in on Inari and he replies, “That hurts,” then there’s nothing wrong with using “Touche.” If anything, it more accurately conveys his good-natured tone and that he’s not actually hurt by Koto’s words, but conceding that she got him. While I don’t think A-Koi’s translation is wrong, I believe “touche” is a very valid alternative and is a rather appropriate response for Inari.

      If you’d be willing to elaborate on some other points you think are wrong/bad in EveTaku’s release, I’d be glad to shed some light on the reasoning behind our decisions. I’m not saying our release is flawless (I’ve noticed a few things from this TL party that could have been improved upon, and I’ll try to watch out for them in future releases), but I do think lyger’s done a phenomenal job with these scripts, so I’m curious as to what people dislike about it.

      • I found it fine up till ep 3, when a sentence that was obviously longer than 15 words was edited as “All roads lead to Rome.”
        Usually I like the “liberality” of commie, but this annoyed me too much to ignore.

        Reply
      • I’m certainly not even remotely a native level speaker, though if I’m able to spend 6 months or so in Japan like I hope to next year it’d help, so I don’t feel confident in making any detailed critiques. I more feel like I’m at the point where if even I noticed something, then there’s probably more I missed. FWIW, after doing the TL Party and that comment I went for a sanity check elsewhere and 8thSin also questioned that line as well as some other stuff I hadn’t noticed: http://pastebin.com/avTUiz4G

        Dunno if you feel like responding to any of his points, they’re much better then mine. I don’t think your release is bad by any means, after doing all the extended ones in a second round EveTaku edged out A-Koi in the end, and I like lyger’s work in general.

        As far as that specific example:
        >it more accurately conveys his good-natured tone and that he’s not actually hurt by Koto’s words
        Saying “ouch” or “I’m hurt” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re actually hurt. That’s standard conversation, the good-natured tone and facial/body language is what conveys the joking nature or sarcasm as the case may be. “You’re so mean!” in a cheery tone and the right setting doesn’t actually mean that. In a 100% written work that’d be trickier to convey, but with subs I’m not sure it’s wrong to take into account the visual/audio cues that are there too, those should be the focus of the viewer after all. I think “that hurts” or similar better conveys the feeling of the scene, but I can see your argument too.

        Reply
        • I freely acknowledge that you can say something like, “I’m hurt,” in a playful tone, which is why I said A-Koi’s TL wasn’t wrong. I simply felt “touche” more effectively conveyed the real meaning of what he’s saying and don’t see why anyone would argue that one is more accurate than the other.

          As for 8th’s comments, I can comment on some of them, but most issues I won’t be able to address by virtue of not knowing Japanese.

          *4:37 – This line does convey that Myoue’s not an ordinary man. Koto-rabbit is denying the fact that Myoue might be dense, and Buddha-chick basically replies with: “Have you seen Myoue? How could you possibly think otherwise?”

          I can maybe look into a few more once I go home and can check our script, but like I said, I’m in no position to judge the accuracy of the TL. I can, however, talk about English equivalence in meaning and address editing-related issues.

    Thanks! This is very useful! It’s be cool if you guys do more of this. I’d make watching anime more enjoyable since the viewer will know what translations they like more than others.
