Fall 2013 Anime Preview: A Reckoning

Time to actually compare my Fall 2013 Anime Preview thoughts to what I thought of the shows after having watched 10 eps of each. Why? Because.

Do note that some of my information in that post was wrong — Pupa did not air, and White Album 2 was a standalone series, not a sequel. I also didn’t watch Gaist Crusher, as nobody subbed it. (Please don’t inform me if someone actually decided to get on that show, because I’d rather pretend it never even existed.)

Predictions vs. Reality

I should note the focus for these is all on me. I don’t care if you thought Coppelion was good; reality is what I make it. So deal.

Yeah, I ship them. So what?

Here are the shows that aligned with my predictions:

Excellent (9-10/10)

Kill la Kill
Yozakura Quartet
Kyoukai no Kanata

Good-ish (7-8/10)

Kyousougiga

Okay (5-6/10)

Tokyo Ravens

Shit (0-4/10)

Non Non Biyori
Gundam Build Fighters

That’s a 31% success rate. Not bad! And people said flipping a coin would result in more accurate predictions~

Buzzer Noise

It doesn’t matter much to me if I predicted something would be Okay and it actually ended up Good-ish. Let’s just focus on the shows where I really swung and missed.

Thought would be good, but sucked

Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!

Sekai_de_Ichiban

In my defense, I like tits. Quite a bit. But I did not anticipate that every episode would have 10 minutes of girls screaming and crying like they just discovered what’s in my basement.

My kimochis, during every fucking episode.
My kimochis, during every fucking episode.

Plus, no lesbians. In a show about female wrestlers. What gives, Japan?

Thought would be bad, but wasn’t terrible

Samurai Flamenco

Samurai_Flamenco_Best_Menco

The first episode met my original expectations for the series, but the introduction of Flamenco Girl brought the series from Kick-Ass-tier to Super-tier.

Nobody told me that a sexy sadist was gonna steal the show, so I blame humanity for this score discrepancy.

Golden Time

Throwing supernatural bullshit into a fucking romance anime is a great idea! The more forced drama the better!
Throwing supernatural bullshit into a fucking romance anime is a great idea! The more forced drama the better!

To be fair, Toradora fans, this isn’t even close to as good as you were hoping it to be, so we both fucked up a bit on the expectations front.

We’ll call this one a wash on account of your failure. You’re lucky I’m letting you off easy.

Strike the Blood

In two months, you won't even remember this anime ever existed.
In two months, you won’t even remember this anime ever existed.

About the only thing Strike the Blood is is not terrible. I’m gonna chalk this one up to Japan sucking and Strike the Blood being honorarily bad.

Yowamushi Pedal

"Help! I missed the character development flag 5 episodes ago!"
“Help! I missed the character development flag 5 episodes ago!”

Although it certainly missed my “Excellent” mark, it’s not that bad. Just another generic entry to the sports genre that falters when the pacing is locked to 24-minute episodes rather than one’s reading speed.

And shame on Japan for making me only read one volume of the manga before the show came out. How was I supposed to know the show would be a sausagefest?

Takeaways

The only good part of Gundam Build Fighters
I’d like to take her away if you know what I mean.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my original predictions were, in fact, divinely inspired and accurate at base. The only person to blame for any inaccuracies in my Fall 2013 preview is everybody but me.

So fear not, I’ll be taking nothing into account for the upcoming Winter 2014 Preview (other than, of course, my own mental perfection) — the only lesson learned is that I have nothing left to learn.

Expect greatness.

Oh good, I’m not the only one who felt less aroused and more fucking uncomfortable while watching this.

    • It’s a solid 8 so far. I’ll see how it turns out when I finish, but I’m not seeing it vary wildly from my current impression.

    • Probably because I didn’t like it.

I despise the characters, and the plot is incredibly predictable and boring. I don’t see how anyone who’s a fan of the genre could see this as anything other than a phoned-in attempt at entertainment.

      • To be fair, AoD is a REALLY DAMN OLD franchise. I bet it wasn’t predictable and boring back then.

But on the other hand… Why even animate it when audiences have evolved a ton from how it was back then? One thing is retro feel and nostalgia and another is trying to watch old stuff that doesn’t pass the test of time.

        • I honestly had no idea it was just bad because it was old. I thought it was some stupid low-budget cash grab written by an unpaid intern that never ended up getting a job offer from the company.

Well at least the genre’s come quite a way from where it used to be.
