Visual Review

Karaoke.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_01.23_[2014.01.17_12.45.58] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_01.31_[2014.01.17_12.47.19]

Opening.  How do you miss the color themes? There’s like one dominant color in each scene, alongside the red that you see in the credits. You should be matching those, not just relying on what you saw in the first frame of the OP. Come on.

Rating: Okay.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_19.00_[2014.01.17_13.25.45]

Insert rap was not subbed.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_23.19_[2014.01.17_14.53.33] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_23.36_[2014.01.17_14.53.55]

Ending. Having the English script without a border so as to match the snow was a good choice. The karaoke effect was rather solid too, but all in all it was a rather standard kara.

Rating: Okay+.

Typesetting.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_00.49_[2014.01.17_12.40.43]

Ah, there we go. Effect matching. Well, to a certain degree. They only matched two of the three colors, after all. But we’ll call it good enough.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_02.38_[2014.01.17_12.49.51][DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_24.09_[2014.01.17_13.34.23] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_06.18_[2014.01.17_12.58.20]

Typesets all the way down.

As BDH and Nyangoro pointed out in the last review, these spell out Noragami. Woulda been nice to have these typeset as well.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_12.03_[2014.01.17_13.14.05] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_12.03_[2014.01.17_13.14.10]

I like how they mimicked the original cut effect here.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_12.06_[2014.01.17_13.14.22]

Why was this skipped? I hope it isn’t because you couldn’t figure out what the translation was.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_14.07_[2014.01.17_13.16.29]  [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_18.31_[2014.01.17_13.24.55]

I get that the kanji’s backwards, but was it really necessary to hide your backwards text underneath the subs?

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_18.41_[2014.01.17_13.25.10]

Not sure what makes them decide when to use the sign.

Script Review

Karaoke.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_01.00_[2014.01.17_15.14.14]

Try “to your shivering body.”

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_01.53_[2014.01.17_15.12.02] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_01.56_[2014.01.17_15.12.15]

What is this supposed to say? Cuz if the answer is “something that makes sense”, you didn’t quite hit the mark.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_22.57_[2014.01.17_15.15.47] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_23.04_[2014.01.17_15.15.57] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_23.07_[2014.01.17_15.16.05] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_23.14_[2014.01.17_15.16.15]

Unlike FFF’s cohesive song TL, DDY’s jumps all over the place. These lines are all supposed to be linked somehow.

No matter what happens, I will always call out
your name
Your heart is jagged and twisted
Those who waver hurt everything
You glare at the whole world
So I will say that I am here
Someone laughed
And so we’re drawn up to that boundary line
If that happens, I’ll pull your hand
and take you with me
If you can’t say it, hold on to my hand tightly and don’t let go
Now you are alone no more
I want you to know that

This is messier than a cannibal’s first date.

Main Script.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_03.55_[2014.01.17_12.55.31]

I went over this in FFF’s review. Ultimately, I don’t have a silver bullet for this line, but it can at least become something mediocre if you try.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_04.04_[2014.01.17_12.55.58]

“next time” as in the next fainting stunt she pulls, or “next time” as in the next run they make to a clothing store? I’m not really sure what you’re trying to say here.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_06.59_[2014.01.17_12.59.05]

Yuck. The line’s supposed to be cutesy-wutsey not ugly-wugly.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_04.25_[2014.01.17_15.23.35] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_04.28_[2014.01.17_15.23.43]

This is supposed to be stupid-fun dialogue. Give your mind a little exercise. FFF had “A flipping, flapping bird!” if you need an example to work off of.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_10.09_[2014.01.17_13.05.39] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_10.11_[2014.01.17_13.05.45]

Uhh, no. This scene is supposed to show why she gets it into her head to look around for any old spirit thing she could find. If she thought he said “Yeah.” to her “Are they people?” question, she’d be looking for humanlike spirits or something, not randoms.

Write it as something like “No, they’re spirits.”They’re spirits, actually.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_10.35_[2014.01.17_13.12.13]

What is this supposed to fucking mean?

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_10.39_[2014.01.17_13.12.22]

I don’t see why you didn’t go with “deadbeat” or the like. Fansubbers of all people should know what people call them.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_15.04_[2014.01.17_13.17.49] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_15.05_[2014.01.17_13.17.54] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_15.07_[2014.01.17_13.18.00] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_15.10_[2014.01.17_13.18.07] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_15.13_[2014.01.17_13.18.15] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_15.16_[2014.01.17_13.18.21]

The two last lines are supposed to be funny. You can tell by the anime faces. So why the fuck is the script so fucking terrible here?

An easy fix would be “Don’t try so hard!” -> “You really shouldn’t have!” {Non-native speakers, this is in the sense of sarcasm.}

“Try harder with that!” -> “You really shouldn’t have!” {And then here he actually means what he says, playing off the previous line.}

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_16.54_[2014.01.17_15.32.46]

I like my italics as much as I like my plastic anime girls, but why’d you throw them on “ain’t” here?

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_17.03_[2014.01.17_13.22.06] [DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_17.08_[2014.01.17_13.22.15]

No. If the tail is cut off, she’ll die. A nick won’t kill her, or Yato wouldn’t have pulled on it like he did earlier in the episode.

[DameDesuYo] Noragami - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [19E5CFDC].mkv_snapshot_24.00_[2014.01.17_13.34.11]

What happened to the flappy-fuzzy one?

Though the script as a whole is generally similar to FFF’s (both used the Funimation TL as their base), the differences are pronounced enough that I’d recommend going with FFF over DDY for Noragami.

Up next for Noragami: Sekinin and Hatsuyuki. But they’ll be getting reviewed for episode 3 or later since I’m not watching Noragami 02 four times in a fucking row.

  1. I wish Funi would stop simulcasting. They usually only do a couple of shows, but they put in the same amount of effort with their simul subs as their directors do when they have to cast a VA to voice a teenage boy.

    • A few days ago they decided to make their simulcasts limited to Funimation premium members. Just wait for that to flop and you’ll see them shrink away from the business.

The funny thing is they’re really, really, really proud of their simulcast scripts. When Soup and I go to cons, we often visit panels the main Funi rep is at and she never misses an opportunity to mention how great their TLs are and how shit all fansubbers are. It’s rather entertaining.

      • Sometimes the FUNi simulcast scripts are good, but I don’t know what kind of company could be so proud about them as a whole. Maybe the TLs are good (and this is the side the rep’s seen, based on credentials or ability or whatnot), but they frequently aren’t trying or are very pressured on time? Or the rep is just deluded.

      • I wonder how she’d respond if someone with a laptop showed her episode 1 of Nourin.

It’s really stupid that they’re making people pay just to watch a simulcast when CR has them for free, albeit in lower resolutions. Maybe Funi’s bottom line is hurting because their re-re-re-release of DBZ on blu-ray isn’t selling as well, or something.

Actually I think this leads to her confusion. He thinks of the spirits as people and so doesn’t elaborate further to tell her what kind of spirit. “No, they’re spirits.” would only have worked if she had said something like “They’re humans?” or “They’re people like us?” Something that excludes spirits.

        • I don’t differentiate between the two, and am actually having a really difficult time understanding your point. However, this may simply be a failing on my part.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

          • I don’t really think using people or human makes much difference in this scenario.

Rather, I think the real issue here is that he gives either a yes or no answer, because that creates a problem.

            “Divine Instruments are people?”

If he answers “Yes, they’re spirits,” then she would assume that they look like… well, people. So that doesn’t work.

If he answers “No, they’re spirits,” then that creates a problem when we see Yukine who, very clearly, looks like a person.

I’d say it would be better to play it up as a correction rather than a direct confirmation or negation.

I would have to hear the dialogue again, but there may be a nuance in the words used that implies a living being. Regardless, having him answer yes or no to that question doesn’t really gel well.

I’d change the response to something like:

            “They’re spirits, actually.”

Wanted to mention this in your sub review of FFF’s version, they actually mean the next time Hiyori faints/falls asleep

  5. Just catching up on finished anime, these reviews really seem a lot more useful once the season is over.

    That said,

    Watching.

I downloaded FFF initially, but I couldn’t stand their ridiculous over-localisations in a show so steeped in Japanese folklore.
