Visual Review

Karaoke.

[ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 05 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [81D92904].mkv_snapshot_01.51_[2014.05.14_21.48.14] [ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 05 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [81D92904].mkv_snapshot_01.56_[2014.05.14_21.48.24]

Opening. A cool mimic effect and a willingness to go the non-standard route (see the second image) add up to an impressive kara offering.

Rating: Great.

[ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 06 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [357FD9C4].mkv_snapshot_22.33_[2014.05.18_22.44.01] [ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 06 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [357FD9C4].mkv_snapshot_22.53_[2014.05.18_22.44.32] [ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 06 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [357FD9C4].mkv_snapshot_23.04_[2014.05.18_22.44.51]

Ending. Pulled this from episode 6, since episode 5 (and 4) didn’t have a standard ED.

Loved how the effect changed as the song did. Would’ve been interesting to see if they could incorporate the credits’ color in their kara, though.

Rating: Good.

First thing that comes to mind with “idle game” is “lazy game”, which doesn’t make much sense. “idle” can mean worthless, so this line passes on a technicality, but why would you introduce needless confusion?

I have to point this out every. goddamn. season. Fansubbers, get it together.

These subs are about as consistent as diarrhea. Weren’t you warned about drinking the water in Mexico, ChihiroDesuYo?

More consistency issues, except this time with English trivia!

fulfil/fulfiled/fulfilment = British English

fulfill/fulfilled/fulfillment = American English

While neither version is wrong, you should decide on one to go with. I suggest the AE version, since Obama is far sexier than the Queen.

Steph, I believe you’re forgetting which joint released these subs. The answer is “no”.

No, on many levels.

“In other words, the Eastern Federation…”

“is an Eden made up of hot furry girls?!”

“Well, there are men and old women, too…” <- She’s refuting both his assumptions here: “young” and “female”. Just using “elders” doesn’t suffice.

[ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 05 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [81D92904].mkv_snapshot_14.25_[2014.05.14_22.08.28]

Fail.

More like “Victory”, since she’s asserting her dominance. “Peace” makes no sense here for an English release, even though the symbol can be interpreted as either “peace” or “victory”… or “bunny ears”.

[ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 05 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [81D92904].mkv_snapshot_14.59_[2014.05.18_21.58.00]

This line works just fine if you know what trope it’s in reference to. But what if your mind hasn’t been ruined by anime yet? Surely even the pure deserve to enjoy NGNL.

“I’m never going to be able to live this down, am I?” <- Similar sentiment, but now everybody gets it. If you wanna bitch about how sentiment isn’t good enough, then just write the shitty trope out and call it good enough. Do it yourself, though. I don’t write shitty scripts.

[ChihiroDesuYo] No Game No Life - 05 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [81D92904].mkv_snapshot_19.05_[2014.05.14_22.15.22]

“They weren’t just playing around.”

Really, now.

Tumblr had it right. Keeping that retardation privilege unchecked was a bad idea.

The biggest problem with this release is that one halfway-decent QC would’ve made picking these subs a no-brainer. It’s rather disappointing that one doesn’t exist in either of the two groups on this joint.

    • Halfway through the season and he’s still working on the first couple shows of the poll. I’d say this season of reviews failed.

  1. Also, living something down isn’t anywhere near the ruined forever concept. It’s not just an anime trope – it has its roots in classic English literature as well. The “ruined forever” is the idea that you’re ruined for marriage because you have this odd notion that someone seeing you naked or touching you inappropriately before you get married means you’re marked for life as damaged goods. If anything, it comes from Christian ideals than anything Japan made up (because they have randy businessmen who enjoy their “extracurricular” activities!). So yeah, you’ve pretty much ruined the humour of that line with your edit (though whether repeating that like every anime in history has done can be counted as humour is debatable)

    • Well, thinking about the sociopolitical side of things more logically, the concept arises in Japan because women are still very much viewed there as growing up to be good little wives. So the idea that your wife might have been “sullied” (a frankly ridiculous notion) before you got to her is somewhat distressing to a swathe of Japanese men. It’s not a new concept, though, and many heavily Catholic nations have the same ideals. In fact, “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by the late Gabriel Garcia Marquez is about a newly-wed husband who sends his wife back to her family in disgrace because she’s found to lack the necessary virginity on her wedding night.

Nowadays, of course, we’re not so extreme, but immature female characters with lofty ideals of white weddings and being the proper little housewife who cooks, cleans and looks pretty still populate anime quite regularly, and to portray them as anything remotely realistic instead of the vacuous cardboard cutouts they are is something the writers and makers of this anime don’t deserve.

Hm, okay, that may be a tad OTT, but still – we’re not here to make their product better :D

    • Then why not say “ruined for marriage” rather than “ruined forever”? I can’t make out the exact wording, but I don’t think Steph is completely ruined in every way just because of what Shiro did to her.

Also, she was pretty much ruined for marriage since meeting Kuuhaku, and what happens after that line is even worse, so…

I agree that Dark_Sage’s idea doesn’t fit, but you’re taking the wrong tack by saying the current line is any better.

      Reply
      • Because she doesn’t say anything about marriage and not every joke and reference has to be explicitly spelled out for the viewer to grasp?

        Reply
      • I didn’t say either line was particularly great, just that Dark_Sage’s ‘edit’ ruined it forever.

Without watching the actual scene, it’s not so easy to come up with a suitable suggestion, but I guess I’ve heard “you’ve ruined me for life” before in American media…

So you’re saying it’s an everyseason occurrence?

  3. Man, D_S, gotta say you have a knack for picking our worst releases. I was right in the middle of finals week so this was a pretty sloppy release. Anyway, glad to see real reviews happening now. Would have enjoyed seeing 06 reviewed. I edited that episode.
