Nice translation, Moogy. These subs are definitely the quality I’d expect from someone who labeled Danganronpa untranslatable.

Translation is so Difficulty
Somebody better tell Project Zetsubou and NISA immediately. The series is a lost cause.

Even though TLWiki went with the black bar version (Chihiro cut the bars from their release), their subs still cut into the main visual sometimes. And on top of that, they kept in the BS11 logo. Guess a clean release is too much to expect from a VN group.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_15.00_[2014.10.24_21.10.47] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_15.00_[2014.10.24_21.10.55] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_15.01_[2014.10.24_21.11.04]

I thought the scene already stamped out stupid scene bleeds. Looks like they didn’t account for VN fags playing at relevance.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_23.32_[2014.10.24_22.01.52]

TLWiki’s release is missing the next episode preview. You’re really only cut out of the next episode’s title and a bit of dialogue, but it’s still worth noting.

Script Review

Main Script.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_00.56_[2014.10.24_19.25.54]

Purposeful farces are my least favorite kind of farces. What the hell is this line even trying to say?

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_00.59_[2014.10.24_22.03.59]

Save the dull dialogue for your high school essays. God, I hate fixing ESLglish, but I’ll take a shot at this anyway.

“But seriously,”

No, no, no. Here’s her previous line: “So much for my thrilling wake up kiss.” You wanna tell me how this even remotely links to that? I’d accept a low-effort “Geez,” or “Man,” here to start the line off, but “But seriously,” fits in about as well as a MegaBlock in a Lego set.

“bleak”

This is not how you \imagery. Christ, I’m surprised you didn’t full retard it and write “barren”.

Look, you need to think of what associations words have. So when you want to use “bleak”, think of what images pop into your head. If you lack imagination, say the word and then think of the next words that come to mind. For example, “bleak” corresponds to “wasteland”. Is that really what she’s comparing his room to? If not, you need to come up with an alternate phrase.

“somehow”

You’re not ready to have this word in your dictionary.

Practically every line in this release suffers from impotent, ineffective writing. Let me put it this way: I’ve read Nintendo fan-fiction with better dialogue.

It may be cringey, but at least it ain't boring.
It may be cringey, but at least it’s not TLWiki-tier.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_02.10_[2014.10.24_19.29.25]

If she’s stuttering and breaking up words, you need to at least write them so people know what they’re missing. The “wai” is pretty simple to guess, but what the fuck is “ge” supposed to stand for? “gero”?

That doesn't even make sense.
That doesn’t even make sense.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_02.14_[2014.10.24_19.29.34]

Since when did nympho-chan get a Scottish accent?

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_02.19_[2014.10.24_19.30.06] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_02.20_[2014.10.24_19.29.48] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_02.23_[2014.10.24_19.30.15]

I said it once before but it bears repeating: the dialogue is more painful than getting fisted by a rhino’s horn.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_05.49_[2014.10.24_19.33.46] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_11.59_[2014.10.24_20.59.24]

Hrm? They prefer to be called “intersex” now, you fucking racists.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_08.19_[2014.10.24_20.17.00]

The written and spoken dialogue are often out of sync. Since exactly how they’re out of step is wildly inconsistent, you pretty much have to read every line as soon as it appears, rather than reading it alongside the Japanese speech. Not exactly the ideal experience for watching a series.

I rarely have to bring this up in reviews, since most groups seem to get this point, but when they don’t, they really don’t.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_09.51_[2014.10.24_20.18.59]

I’ll go into why this name sucks ass during Chihiro’s review.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_03.09_[2014.10.24_22.33.31]

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_10.08_[2014.10.24_20.19.23] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_14.15_[2014.10.24_21.08.06]

First elongated ears, now elongated words. How far will suburbanites go to ruin everything?

Keep the shitty extensions out of my anime, plz.

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_10.46_[2014.10.24_20.57.24] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_13.16_[2014.10.24_21.01.48]

Lines built with neither brain nor swagger.

The whole point of MC’s fucking character is that he’s (at least to the viewer) awkwardly precise. How the fuck do you not extend that trait to his dialogue?

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_12.10_[2014.10.24_21.00.16]

Sentences end with

[TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_21.11_[2014.10.24_21.51.32] [TLWiki] Grisaia no Kajitsu - 03 [2740CAD4].mkv_snapshot_21.13_[2014.10.24_21.51.38]

Again, the dialogue flows like the translator has constipation. These two screens don’t fit together at all. The worst part is he fucking says “Iya” in Japanese — giving you fuckwits the exact means of linking the lines together.

This release is a bigger waste than horizontally filmed porn.

Apparently TL Wiki’s going to put up a Kickstarter to acquire VN rights for Grisaia in the west. I wouldn’t trust these guys to write their own names right, let alone a VN translation. But hell, maybe they’ll try harder if they’re getting the 40k they want for each part of the series?

kickstarter grisaia

Guess there’s only one way to find out, right? C’mon richfags, open up those wallets. There ain’t much like the smell of burnt money.

    • You literally respond to every one of D_S’s review and argue with him to no end about them, yet you’re trying to imply that no one takes him seriously? At the very least, you take him seriously, Xythar.

      Reply
    • Ever notice how any time Xythar or one of his friends get trashed in a fansub review they call this site a joke?

Ever notice how any time Xythar or one of his friends are praised, they keep quiet?

Like look at the past few Vivid releases. Akame ga Kill was trashed on this site, while Aldnoah Zero and Coppelion were praised. Let’s look at the comments, shall we?
      Aldnoah Zero – No comments
      Coppelion – No comments
Akame ga Kill – Xythar gets into a fight about the suggestions made, archdeco calls the site’s credibility into question.

OK, how about we try something else.
Commie’s past few releases reviewed were Sailor Moon Crystal, Tokyo Ghoul, and Aldnoah Zero. SMC and Tokyo Ghoul got good reviews, Aldnoah Zero was trashed. So, let’s look at the comments.
      SMC – No comments
      Tokyo Ghoul – No comments
Aldnoah Zero – Xythar attacks D_S on using the term “re-encode”.

This isn’t the first time this happened. Like, look at bakabt a few years ago. There was a period of time where Commie was chosen over Chihiro for I think 5 or 6 straight shows, and then when Chihiro was chosen over Commie, suddenly all Commie members started crying “BIAS! BIAS! BIAS!” Unfortunately, the bakabt mods listened to the crying and have since become rather incompetent at their jobs.

I find this site to be quite useful. It labels releases appropriately, with evidence to support it. It’s far better than the nyaa system of “Let’s blue all Commie releases, hue hue hue”.

      • It reminds me of you as well. Whenever it comes to a member of the so called “Cartel”, you’ll never miss a chance to post your conspiracy theories either. Strange, isn’t it?

That aside, it’s just how everything works. When someone praises you, there really isn’t anything much to say, is there? When someone trashes you, you’ll try to defend yourself as much as possible. It’s natural.

        Reply
        • Defending yourself is one thing.

Using a source to promote yourself and the criticizing it only when it’s convenient is another.

It’s just like I wouldn’t dream of defending CGi’s DtB S2 anywhere with the argument of “Nyaa made it A+”. I don’t believe in the system, even when it favors me.

      • Vivid-Watashi’s Aldnoah Zero was hardly praised. Besides, what’s there to say when someone says you did a good job? Thank you?

        Reply
      • Could you stop it with your conspiracy theories already? It’s like all you do here is post conspiracy theories crying for attention, mate. As already mentioned, what is there to say when you’re praised besides “thank you” or something? Serious question, what do you expect them to say when they’re praised?

      • “Praised” was probably a poor choice of words, but the point Kristen was making was any time one of their releases are trashed, they question the legitimacy of this website. But any time their releases aren’t, they have no problem agreeing with D_S’s review.

        Reply
        • So not commenting on an article means I agree with it now? There are plenty of things I disagree with even in those “positive” reviews, but most aren’t worth bringing up because arguing on this site is like bashing one’s head against a particularly arrogant brick wall.

I could go back and post “I question the legitimacy of this website” on every article, but that seems like useless spam to me. You can assume that’s my default stance unless I say otherwise.

          Reply
              • Xythar, the original question — which you avoided — was why you pretend no one takes this site seriously? Again, at the very least you take it seriously, as is evident by your constant responses and arguing with everything posted here.

                Reply
                • I think you’re reading a little hard into a throwaway insult. I’m sure you can do better than the tired old “if you care so little why are you posting?” cliche, though.

                  Reply
                  • Lol, sure thing. You and your buddies always go on about how no one takes this site seriously. It’s not a throwaway insult — you genuinely believe it.

                    Reply
                    • Oh, I don’t think that there is literally no one out there who takes the site seriously (Kristen certainly seems to), but by and large, fansubbers don’t care about Crymore anymore. And given that we’ve only just had the first “review” a whole month into the season, I doubt Dark_Sage does either. The site as it is now exists more as a means to generate drama (notice how the first show to get reviewed is the one that conveniently has a related Prefundia to stir up controversy with?) than as a legitimate sub comparison resource.

                    • Chill out with the conspiracies, Xythar. It’s unseemly.

                      1. Whether “fansubbers” care about Crymore or not is irrelevant. While I do write with the assumption that fansubbers will read my posts, they aren’t my primary audience, nor have they have ever been. If that wasn’t the case, this site would have followed the trend of decline that fansubbing has, but we’ve been growing since we hit the ‘nets in 2010.

                      2. It’s not that I “don’t care” about Crymore. I’d love to spend all day writing, but there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that I want to. As such, I’ve prioritized my personal and professional life over my hobbies. It’s called being an adult.

                      3. “drama” is a by-product and not the end goal. Grisaia wasn’t even going to be my first post of the season — Amagi was, until I hit writer’s block and shelved that post for a while. As for how I chose Grisaia… you are aware of the poll, right? I didn’t even know TLWiki had a Prefundia until after I had written the majority of the post, because I don’t follow the VN scene.

You’re losing your grip of reality, old friend. I’m starting to worry about you.

                    • Yeah, the show I just happened to be competing with the almighty Dark_Sage on. I’m sure there was no foul play involved.

(It was actually an F until various people convinced him he was being an idiot, but I guess that’s neither here nor there!)

                    • If you didn’t take this site seriously you’d fuck off and not even care about his opinions. That’s obviously not the case, though, since you are always on this website.

                    • I did do that for a bit, but it’s more fun to hang around and argue with people. Considering that the entire purpose of the website at this point is to stir up drama, might as well make use of it.

Of course, you’re free to keep believing whatever you like, just as I’m free to keep editing (and recommending) however the hell I want.

                    • Frequenting this site has other purposes too.

I don’t consider his reviews to be enough to judge the quality of a release. They are good for a first impression, but lack the depth required for a comprehensive review. To sum it up:

                      – He doesn’t know Japanese
                      – He doesn’t know anything about encoding
                      – He does’t know anything about typesetting
                      – He only reviews the fluency of the dialogues, the grammatical accuracy and the such.
                      – He won’t consider the Japanese source.
                      – He won’t change his opinions, even when completely wrong, unless someone blatantly points it out to him.

Given that most of the reviews are his ones, they follow exactly that format.

There really isn’t any other good fansub review site. CryMore has the monopoly here.

                    • While unfortunate, it’s clear Crymore doesn’t give you any enjoyment. Similarly, you don’t give me any enjoyment. As it stands, I think the next step you should take is pretty clear… or am I going to need to find the footing for you?

Not to single you out, though. This goes all you regulars who hate Crymore yet can’t seem to stay away. I’m more than willing to solve this issue for each of you if you can’t handle it yourselves. <3

                    • Xythar, ever consider these “fansubbers” you’re talking about are all the people who are of the same mindset of you? That if yours or their releases aren’t all approved of across the board, the site is trash?

The funny thing is how the issues brought up by fansubbers really isn’t noticed by 99% of the people who watch a sub.

                    • My bad, I must have missed part of the sentence there. I meant he won’t change his opinions even when he’s completely wrong. Yes, opinions are subjective, but they may be based on wrong assumptions.

                    • I find it kind of hard to believe the site is more popular now than it was a year or two ago when articles were published regularly, but you’re the one with the statistics, so whatever. If you want to turn it into a generic anime/gaming blog with the occasional fansub review for entertainment purposes, that’s your prerogative.

                    • “2. It’s not that I “don’t care” about Crymore. I’d love to spend all day writing, but there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that I want to. As such, I’ve prioritized my personal and professional life over my hobbies. It’s called being an adult. ”

His ‘professional’ life is watching anime all day and writing to strangers online, yet he claims that Xythar’s the one who’s lost his “grip of reality”.

                    • Ugh, reply tree too deep.

                      @John Ken
Can you even understand English? His “professional life” is exactly that – his job. Crymore is his hobby, and he’s saying he doesn’t have enough time for it because of his job.

Also, spare us your superior tastes in interests and hobbies.

          • Assuming “brick wall” is a metaphor for my penis, I gotta say I’m a little worried about your interpretation of giving head.

            Reply
        • I really don’t think anyone would agree with D_S’ reviews. But kristen has said before he trusts these reviews and does not trust any TL they might get to offer their opinion, so it’s not like they can point to anything else. Too conspiratorial otherwise.

          Reply
          • I would expect that if people didn’t agree with my reviews then they simply wouldn’t visit the site. Of course, I might be giving those that are too stupid for Crymore a bit too much credit.

  1. lol, this review is hilarious, it showed your ignorance in japanese..

the so called “scottish accent” is to emphasize amane’s kyoto acccent

“hrm” is like yuuji’s unique “speech”, which was mimicked by makina (and he said it a lot in the VN).. using the standard “hmm” will make it lose that meaning

“kittymeow” (neko-nya in japanese) isn’t actually the cat’s name.. it will get explained later on (or at least in the VN) as to why michiru call it that way

    • So the TLWiki subs are perfect because they’re pulled from the TLWiki VN translation, which is perfect because it’s the translation you read. Man, I know not all ESLs are as dumb as you, but you sure are making a hard case for xenophobia.

still makes more sense than your review

  2. > Nice translation, Moogy. These subs are definitely the quality I’d expect from someone who labeled Danganronpa untranslatable.

This wasn’t translated by Moogy, but rather lifted from the VN translation done by koestl. Also, why did you lie about where Moogy placed Danganronpa in his translation difficulty list (which is only half-serious)? It’s quite clearly under “Requires Being An Intelligent Human Being Tier (Normal)”, not “Untranslatable”.

    > God, I hate fixing ESLglish, but I’ll take a shot at this anyway.

This is just petulant name-calling. The translator has a degree in English, and is a native speaker. He’s also much better at English than you are ;)

    > bleak

Here, I’ll paste the second dictionary definition for you.

    > bleak – adjective
    > (of a building or room) charmless and inhospitable; dreary.

Are you sure you aren’t ESL, Dark_Sage?

    > Since when did nympho-chan get a Scottish accent?

Amane often lapses into a Kansai accent if she’s nervous or angry. It’s pretty obvious if you know any Japanese at all.

    > I’ll go into why this name sucks ass during Chihiro’s review.

The name is dumb in Japanese too, the translation just reflects that.

    > Lines built with neither brain nor swagger.
The whole point of MC’s fucking character is that he’s (at least to the viewer) awkwardly precise. How the fuck do you not extend that trait to his dialogue?

Dear D_S, I believe you may have a terminal case of retardation. Did you even watch the fucking scene at all? The whole point is his mind wondered off and he was responding on autopilot.

    > Again, the dialogue flows like the translator has constipation. These two screens don’t fit together at all. The worst part is he fucking says “Iya” in Japanese — giving you fuckwits the exact means of linking the lines together.

You don’t know Japanese, why are you criticizing the translation? Or are you just a literalfag?

BTW, TLWiki isn’t really even a group. There’s no consistent set of people who work on projects. And the TLWiki fansub group is basically just herkz.

    • 0. Moogy, koestl, same thing. Hacks who could only make it in the VN scene where standards is a dirty word.
      1. His comment on Danganronpa was that the jokes were untranslatable. Learn to reading comprehension.
      2. If he has a degree in English, that means he isn’t better than anyone. He pissed away those two years at CC.
      3. Do I need to paste in the definition of imagery for you, or can I trust that you’re smart enough to find it yourself?
      4. Yeah, she went super kansai in that scene. She also must have stuttered too, based on how the subs were written. Mind pointing out where that happened in the audio? I’m clearly not as good at Japanese as random VN scene trash.
      5. Are you illiterate or did you simply skip over where I said I’d discuss that in Chihiro’s review?
      6. It’s a common issue throughout the release, and keep the mean language to a minimum; you’re being needlessly offensive. :(
      7. A translation involves more than a dictionary, which you’d know if you weren’t… oh, whoops. I promised myself I wouldn’t make fun of autists anymore on my site. Nearly slipped there~

She’s not comparing it to a “bleak wasteland” – that would be imagery. She’s simply using a pretty common adjective. Bleak: “(of a building or room) charmless and inhospitable; dreary.”

“も…やだ…私…もうお嫁いかれへん…” – If you can’t recognize the verb here as kansai-ben, you shouldn’t be commenting on this stuff in the first place.

            • I already did. “Bleak” brings up images of nothingness. That’s how imagery works. “Spartan” is a much better choice, but I didn’t want to suggest a two-syllable word to someone of your caliber. It’s not my intent to confuse, but rather to educate.

As far as posting random strings of Japanese, I have no idea what you’re going for. This is an English-speaking site (one of the things I’m particular about, gomen), so try again.

What images pop into /your/ head when reading this word is irrelevant. The word “bleak” has been used to describe “dreary rooms” so often that it’s quite literally part of the dictionary definition. If it sounds unnatural in that context to you, the problem is entirely on your end.

        1. Yes, it was. That’s not what you said though. “someone who labeled Danganronpa untranslatable”
        2. It means he has provable English skills. Obviously that doesn’t mean you aren’t entitled to criticize him (appeal to authority is a logical fallacy), but it’s a useful counterpoint to your insults. What are your credentials? Fansubbing for currently 0 groups?
        3. The imagery fits. “bleak” does not refer to a literal wasteland.
        4. I’m at work now, I can’t listen to the audio, sorry.
        5. Obviously I saw that. I just decided to give a counterpoint now.

          1. That is what I said. If you can’t translate a key portion of the series, then it’s untranslatable. That’s like… the definition.
          2. Have him post his degree then.
2.5 Been a while since I had anyone ask for my credentials. I have a bachelor’s in fansubbing and a master’s in sugoiness, if that suffices. If not, I’m afraid what you’re looking for is the wrong thing.
          3. If you describe a room as “bleak”, there better not be any furnishings there. Pretty sure there were quite a few in that scene.
          4. Unless you’re rolling late night shift, you’re not a native speaker. It’s early AM here in the states.

          • 0) I see no problem with this release. Regardless, neither of them are directly involved.
            1) You can definitely translate the game. The jokes just have to be reworked because they don’t work in English (see Joshiraku). If you have any ideas on how to translate puns without rewriting them, I’m all ears.
            3) That’s not what bleak means.
            4) There are English speaking countries outside the US. The horror.

0.5 One guy wrote the script, the other one runs the group. What makes them free from criticism?
              1. Translate doesn’t mean “1:1 it with a dictionary”.
              3. 2false.
              4. While American English is the only English that matters (since you’re new to the scene, I feel I have to inform you that American English is the only standard used outside of Doki releases), I am rather interested to see which backwater country you’re from. Amuse me, please.

0.5) While koestl translated the script, he wasn’t involved with the fansub. Moogy wasn’t involved in either. You say he “runs the group”, but there isn’t a group to run. TLWiki isn’t a translation group, it’s a website that hosts translations.
                1) That’s my point. Having to alter the jokes doesn’t make it untranslatable.

It doesn’t mean shit, actually. Telling people on the internet that you have a degree in English really doesn’t prove that you’re proficient at English. The only way we, the people watching the release, can judge what his English skills are like is by watching what he produces. The fact that he claims to have an English degree doesn’t absolve him from criticism.

Where did he get his degree? Does having an English degree mean that something as trivial as fansubbing will be easy to get right? I’ve heard stories of people who purport to have English degrees or be English majors being turned away from editor’s positions at fansub groups for not being able to adequately adapt their “skills” to fansubbing, or just not possessing those skills at all.

      • Why are you trying to make fun of yourself? :(

No, seriously, you’re just doing the internet thing where you spout your own ignorance for days with some absurd amount of self confidence that must come from a well. A clown wouldn’t put on a show like this because the audience would be gone in a flash.

Your strange insistence on shitting on TLWiki and anyone involved with it when you don’t even really know what it is; your desperate defense of any point made in your non-review; your attempt at establishing camaraderie by poking fun at a perfectly reasonable comment about a game (of course you wouldn’t know that since you’re too busy armchairing about a language you don’t know); your half-heart attempt at caring about language in general (of course coupled with the signature toxic attitude, since I guess you don’t know anything else): all point to the habits of only the lowliest entertainer. Come on, you can put on a better show.

If you actually have anything to say, ever, at any point, feel free to express your concerns, but be well aware of the dangers of limiting your thought by a template: especially one of an angry non-thinker who somehow got the idea he’s intelligent.

        i noticed i made a typo so i got bored lol :(

      >Dear D_S, I believe you may have a terminal case of retardation. Did you even watch the fucking scene at all? The whole point is his mind wondered off and he was responding on autopilot.

I think what D_S meant was the use of “may have slipped ever so slightly”, the MC should have been able to tell how focused he was, given his character.

  3. This release is 90% copy pasting lines from the VN translation.

It causes some issues with length, timing, and flow (where lines were cut).

Still, is this really the first time you’ve seen Kansai-ben adapted as a southern accent? Or the adjective “bleak” applied to a room?

How do you translate “not your fault” to be “awkwardly precise”? Why would you be “awkwardly precise” in a scene where he’s zoning out and repeating 3 phrases over and over?

Fucking kek. Yeah, it sure does look like it.

The lines here are so stilted and unnatural that I can’t imagine anyone having a problem with it not being literal enough.

Oh well, you guys all failed to change my mind on anything in my regular post. But hey, I’m a generous guy. Here’s some more shitty writing for you to defend while I sleep. Have at it.

    Spoiler:
    Dialogue: 5,0:03:04.94,0:03:07.09,Default,Amane,0,0,0,,Wha… wait! This song!
This says nothing. Why even translate this line if you weren’t gonna do anything with it?

Dialogue: 5,0:04:44.00,0:04:48.22,Default,Sachi,0,0,0,,So, to drink with lunch, a green iced tea for Amane-san,
    Dialogue: 5,0:04:48.22,0:04:50.18,Default,Sachi,0,0,0,,milk tea for Michiru-sama,
Dialogue: 5,0:04:50.18,0:04:53.73,Default,Sachi,0,0,0,,and Sakaki-san will have unsweetened lemon tea?
Hahahahahaha. Does maid-san have a mental defect? This isn’t “proper” speak, if that’s what you were going for.

Dialogue: 5,0:04:56.52,0:04:59.19,Default,Yuuji,0,0,0,,I’ll go with water. Make mine non-carbonated.
    Dialogue: 5,0:04:59.19,0:05:01.65,Default,Sachi,0,0,0,,Uncarbonated, you said?
    Way to match.

Dialogue: 5,0:05:57.29,0:05:59.63,Default,Yumiko,0,0,0,,While this seems like quite the stimulating conversation,
Dialogue: 5,0:05:59.63,0:06:04.17,Default,Yumiko,0,0,0,,don’t you have to prepare for afternoon classes, Suou-san and Irisu-san?
Replace Suou and Irisu with normal names to see why this is a bad line.

Dialogue: 5,0:11:57.73,0:12:00.44,Default,Yuuji,0,0,0,,Hrm. A face mop, eh? That brings back memories.
    Dialogue: 5,0:12:00.44,0:12:03.41,Default,Michiru,0,0,0,,That’s completely ridiculous!
    Quarity character interactions.

Dialogue: 5,0:15:26.61,0:15:29.74,Default,Yuuji,0,0,0,,Adequate sleep! Adequate! Sleep! Is! Gravely! Important!
Isn’t this scene supposed to be funny?

Dialogue: 5,0:18:08.52,0:18:10.98,Default,Amane,0,0,0,,And now you take this deliberately cold attitude.
This Britspeak or something? Cuz it sure ain’t a sentence anyone would speak in a civilized country.

  7. When I watched one of their releases and heard of what they were doing what I actually thought they did was copy-paste the VN text and make subs out of them, which probably isn’t very far off, and that was mainly why I thought everything felt kinda awkward and out of place, I did play the game so that’s probably why I didn’t mind them too much but they really don’t work that well in anime.
And “bleak”, Amane is dumber than the people defending that, maybe if the MC said that you could have a point but otherwise keep that shit in the VN.

    Reply
      • @PP: They’re using the Game TL. So copy-paste was probably involved at some point.

@Mehrwerfer: Good job with the visual novel, yes. With the anime, not so much. What works with one doesn’t necessarily work with the other. It’d be like presuming just because a pâtissier is great at baking cakes and such, that they’d be great at cooking meat.
But hey, Herkz is working on this release, so it’s automatically the best by default.

      • I’m not sure I’d go as far as to say I enjoy them, I just don’t mind them that much but their subs do feel pretty awkward and it doesn’t really work.
I watched the first and third episodes with these subs and it was the same thing, I think it’s a lot more noticeable in episode 1 though, while watching HS’ didn’t make me feel that way.
It’s like I don’t want to dislike these subs but I can’t like them either, probably because it reminds me of the VN and I enjoyed that quite a bit.

  8. The staffer working on this has access to the actual game script (AFAIK) so literally all he had to do was copy/paste into aegi and time. The translation works well in VN format, however, I do not believe it works well in anime. The same can be said for vice versa. See: kusion and fotc are working on the Mikakunin manga and they’re having to change lines because they just don’t work in manga. Example: 美味しい?美味しい? -> Well? Well? (in the context of kobeni’s sister making kobeni lunch or breakfast or something and asking kobeni how it is.) It works well when said with the audio in the anime, but in the form of a manga script it’s just weird.

    • Wow I was editing my response and the timer went off and closed what I already had on my edit. Just imagine this is at the bottom of this post.

The dialog was originally meant to be read as a dialog in a book. When spoken and read/heard in other media it sounds kinda off. Most people don’t talk like they write and all. For example, let’s imagine you edited a manga script, D_S. The script reads perfectly. Some months to a year later, an anime adaptation was announced and you wanted to work on the anime. You already did the work for the manga and the script read nicely, but if you were to take the dialog from the manga and retime it to the anime it’d just sound “off” because it’s a different media.

lyger tled Gochuumon from the manga in advance every week and he had to go back and change stuff to fit the anime when the episode aired still.

I’m not saying this grade isn’t justified; I’m just saying what they tried to do didn’t work.

  9. Grisaia’s (VN) translation was extremely well edited. You have to be an utter dumbfuck to go flinging shit at that. Oh wait, you haven’t read it and obviously have no clue. ‘k.

The fansub on the other hand, wasn’t well edited. The choice of words on “what a bleak room” -scene was admittedly poor and struck my eye as well. The word we’re looking for here is “plain”.

The VN translation’s strength was making several poorly translatable jokes work, that’d be welcome in the fansub translation as well. But a better flowing dialogue would definitely be needed, as the execution in the actual Japanese dialogue itself is rather poor in the animated version… Stiff script just highlights those inherit weaknesses.

…without even stating why, which makes it look like you’re hating just for the sake of hating. Also you keep talking about how the Japanese voice doesn’t match the text. That’s called localization. Stop pretending you’re so good at Japanese merely because you know what “いや” means. Lmao

Only thing he mentioned about that was the syncing problems, and I don’t think D_S is trying to fool you by making you think he knows japanese, he’s not saying the script is wrong, it’s just poorly written.

      A. That would be boring.
      B. Most issues I point out in the review are rather obvious.

What line are you having trouble with, specifically?

As for the mismatch between dialogue and script, I provided you with an MP3 file and the line that was “written” for it. I understand two-piece puzzles may be difficult for someone of your intellectual caliber to figure out, but perhaps if you stopped trying to shove them up your nose you might eventually stumble upon the answer, desu.
