As UTW struggles to find the motivation to release quicker than I write, the quality-minded viewer is left with few other options. Let’s take a look at one such, well, let’s call it “alternative”.

Visual Review

Like every Hatsuyuki release I can recall, the karaoke is hardsubbed. I’m sure there’s a reason to care about this, but I struggle to find one.

Karaoke.

Opening. I can’t say I really “get” the black KFX, but whatever. Looks good.

Rating: Good.

Ending. As per standard, the karaoke is the best part of this release.

Rating: Good.

Explaining this one would be a lot more tedious than just giving you a webm, so here’s the webm:

I’m going to assume you can guess what my complaint is.

Uhh, no. That’s exactly how they end up dealing with him. They’re not gonna talk him to death. “brute force” != “force”

In case the pan didn’t clue you in, these lines are linked. I could probably overlook them if they were in the opposite order, but this is a Hatsuyuki release, so they aren’t.

This is the only scene in this episode with notable dialogue, and Hatsuyuki handles it as you’d expect them to. Terribly.

Priest: Many voices…
Priest: Too many desires lead you astray.
Priest: Words are cheap and a lie is a man’s sin.
Blondie: Your words are twisted, Priest.
Blondie: It is not something you would show in public.

If you wanna see what 20 lines of gibberish look like, here’s the full thing:

Since there’s only about 200 lines in the script (most shows have between 300 and 400 lines per episode), it’s a rather significant failure.

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_13.03_[2014.10.29_01.34.34]

I don’t have to -> I see no need to

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_13.28_[2014.10.28_22.34.53]

Yes, that’s what “autonomous” means.

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_16.10_[2014.10.28_22.38.29]

Yes, that’s what “in vain” means.

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_16.53_[2014.10.29_01.39.59]

Yes, that’s what– Goddammit, Hatsuyuki, how many times am I gonna have to repeat myself?

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_14.26_[2014.10.29_01.36.09]

Except Rin didn’t “block” Zelle; she deflected its trajectory, causing it to slam into the ground.

That’s a bit of a mouthful, so I’d just go with something generic, like “You’ve fended off Zelle” (which is the line CR had).

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_15.32_[2014.10.28_22.37.38]

Hatsuyuki has no comma sense.

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_17.04_[2014.10.29_01.40.24]

Crunchy’s line here — “Will you make someone else do something you can’t do on your own?” — hurts, but at least you can understand it.

[Hatsuyuki]_Fate_stay_night_-_Unlimited_Blade_Works_-_03_[10bit][1280x720][8BCBECC3].mkv_snapshot_21.19_[2014.10.28_22.44.10]

Your not even trying’re you? (I’m so sorry.)

  1. I don’t get that second to last screenshot, what is he even trying to say? Hatsuyuki’s and CR’s lines are completely different.
Hatsuyuki’s suggests that whoever he’s talking to is telling him how they can’t do something and he’s telling them something like “don’t expose your weaknesses” (edit: thinking about it more it might be something like “don’t tell me what you can’t do in hopes I do it for you” or something, otherwise it really makes no sense) and CR’s tells me Shiro is questioning them.
Context is probably important here but I’m too lazy to check.

    • It’s something like “If you’re unable to do something on your own, will you bring it upon someone else to do it for you?” Something like that… I think. Obviously this line would be too long for the time allotted. But hey, I could be wrong here. That’s what I get from this line.

      Reply
    • Hatsu’s line makes more sense if you extend it like so: “Don’t tell others to do what you can’t do yourself.” This is what they were trying to say. Obviously, they failed at that.

  2. “Interfering = verb”
Something tells me you’re aware of what a gerund is, but there’s certainly no reason not to have “interference” here.

  3. OK so Hatsuyuki is fail. That means the only real alternative is Commie, are they any good? I watched their release of episode 1 and the only things that annoyed me were the lack of honorifics and the fact that they translated the German magic chanting things into English.

    Reply
    • Does it really matter if the German is translated to English? I don’t think so.

Your other alternative is UTW, which I’m watching, but for archiving purposes since they’re quite behind.

      Reply
      • It doesn’t matter in the sense that it doesn’t change the meaning or anything, I just liked the German incantations. Plus they were left untranslated in the VN so I might be biased. And yeah UTW is great but I don’t want to wait 2 weeks for a new episode. I’ll probably use their release for archiving.

        • The number of TL issues we have to fix in their script each week suggests otherwise, but you’re free to draw your own conclusions, I suppose. My style isn’t the same as Raze’s, and I doubt any of us have his attention to detail, but I think the release improves on CR pretty comfortably from an accuracy standpoint.

Now all we have to do is catch up…

          Reply
          • Stop lying.

Raze: if the simulcaster provides legitimate 720p video or above and/or the script quality isn’t completely unacceptable, I will almost certainly forego the opportunity of working on it, because, well, I think you’d agree that waking up at 3am in the morning and spending 5-6 hours to make a bunch of insignificant changes in an already decent script for a show that 90% of people have already watched because they couldn’t wait isn’t exactly a good use of my time and sanity… right?

            Conclusion is obvious, isn’t it?

            Reply
            • Xythar didn’t say the script was completely unacceptable, he just said that there are a lot of TL issues they have to fix.

I’d say UTW’s script flows a lot better, but CR is good enough that it’s not really worth waiting for UTW until they’ve caught up and are releasing within a few days of the episode airing. Definitely the best group to archive, though.

              Reply
            • Unfortunately for you, mistakes were definitely present. It’s your choice what you want to watch, and posting some quotes from months ago won’t really change the actual reality.

              • And your japanese skills are just fine, correct?
                Yeah, reliable source of information.
                Keep it up, dude.

I don’t give a darn about whatsoever Xythar or any other fansubbing hero is saying.

                Hanamonogatari + groups = fail.
                Crunchy = flawless subs.

Conclusion is as plain as day.

                Reply
            • Raze also said (much more recently, in fact) that he’d love to work on UBW, considered it, but ultimately decided that he’s too busy IRL to fansub, and that he wasn’t willing to give up other things in his life to make time for it.

Oh, and he gave the UTW crew working on it his blessing, saying he was sure they’d do a good job even without him.

              Reply
            • Uh, what am I lying about here? I never said Raze was working on it, just that CR’s script has plenty of issues. You don’t even have to take my word for it – it’s right there in the original Japanese.

              Reply
              • I think he’s saying that if CR really did have a lot of issues, Raze would be working on it. Raze is not working on it, therefore CR is “flawless subs” and you are lying about the TL issues, etc. etc.

                Reply
                • Oh. Well, that’d be difficult considering that Raze wrote that post and peaced out from fansubbing months before the show even aired. I don’t think anything would drag him back at this point.

                  Reply
                    • Most likely not happening, I’m sorry to say.

Raze can’t even connect to IRC anymore because he cancelled his VPN or something. His idle time’s almost reached 3000 hours at this point.

                      So basically, RIP.

                    • >Raze can’t even connect to IRC anymore because he cancelled his VPN or something
                      Please tell me this is just your subtle way of telling me to fuck off to IRC and ask him? ;_;

  4. You know, I was looking at the last several reviews given to the syndicate groups, and it’s obvious what is happening here.

The cartel has employed people to infiltrate these groups and sabotage their releases in order to give the impression that they are bad. The syndicate groups are much better than the cartel; it’s just that the cartel is using its Nyaa power and donation money to hurt the quality of the syndicate’s releases.
