And Incompetency Fest 2013 continues! Unfortunately, if you don’t speak English natively, I doubt this is going to be a helpful review for you. These lines are so fundamentally fucked, it would take a paragraph to deconstruct each one, so I’m gonna forgo much of my normal explanation. Blame gg for sucking so bad.

Visual Review

Karaoke.

Opening. Colors match and my shitty laptop didn’t lag while watching it. That’s a pass in my book.

Rating: Okay.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_22.37_[2013.05.14_23.52.02] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_23.10_[2013.05.14_23.52.50]

Ending. Unfortunately, it appears gg took positioning lessons from a blind man. The ending makes it clear where the karaoke should be placed, but standard placement and easy-mode font choice clearly took priority.

Rating: Okay-.

Typesetting.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_03.07_[2013.05.14_22.19.47]

So bad it has to be intentional. No one’s that incompetent, right?

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_03.39_[2013.05.14_22.21.22]

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_03.47_[2013.05.14_22.21.37]

Do tell what a “planned” little sister is supposed to be.

(Psst: In case this is the cause of your confusion, Japan ain’t China; you don’t have to fill out a form to get family members.)

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_08.24_[2013.05.14_22.41.41]

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_16.37_[2013.05.14_23.41.00] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_16.47_[2013.05.14_23.41.15] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_21.49_[2013.05.14_23.51.00]

Competent typesetting, but they clearly aimed for only the bare minimum.

Script Review

Karaoke.

Not even gonna bother.

Main Script.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_00.29_[2013.05.14_22.05.38]

No, this isn’t a pun. gg just doesn’t know the term is “foul play”. I think they’ve been spending a bit too much time playing with fowl themselves instead of learning English.

And by that, I mean they’re chicken-fuckers. You know, in case I didn’t make that clear enough.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_00.31_[2013.05.14_22.05.56]

Instead of fucking up the translation by calling her “Little Bean” like some other groups did, gg goes full wap and fails to translate Oujo-sama’s nickname. Which completely misses the point of it being a nickname.

You’re totally right though, gg. What humans call each other doesn’t matter at all, you illiterate fuckbrains.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_00.36_[2013.05.14_22.06.16]

“I mean” is the perfect segue from a previous line. However, this is the first line the speaker had in this episode. So… it’s completely fucking wrong. Hooray~

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_04.14_[2013.05.14_22.23.22]

Commas are fucked throughout the ep, so I’m fairly fucking certain they just decided to skip edit for this episode and go straight to release.

You had like 50 fucking editor applications, guys. Surely one of them was turned in by a native English speaker. Put that kid to work while he’s still naive enough to think fansubbing is a worthwhile hobby. Lie and tell him he can be like me one day, that’ll be good motivation.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_05.34_[2013.05.14_22.28.05] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_05.38_[2013.05.14_22.28.12] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_05.42_[2013.05.14_22.28.19]

Awful. Just awful. I’m not pulling this shit out of context, though I wish I was. This is how all the lines in the release are phrased.

The script has the cadence of a deaf guy playing trumpet at 7 o’clock in the morning. And fuck you, gg, some people like to sleep in on Sundays.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_05.46_[2013.05.15_01.10.24]

If these lines don’t instill a sense of pain into your skull, you either need to brush up on your English skills or take a hammer and emulate my suffering.

But it gets worse.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_06.08_[2013.05.14_22.31.54] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_06.13_[2013.05.14_22.32.02]

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_06.34_[2013.05.14_22.34.52]

This is real. From an actual script. gg has the wordplay skills of a pet rock.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_08.16_[2013.05.14_22.39.52]

There actually is a difference between “bear with me” and “bear with it” here. And you used the wrong one.

Not that it’s even a good line for the scene.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_08.38_[2013.05.14_22.43.11] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_08.40_[2013.05.14_22.43.03]

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_08.45_[2013.05.14_22.43.48]

1. The mumbling from the second screen wasn’t shown on screen while she was biting him, rendering the third line utterly ineffective.

2. ‘eelz ‘ud makes no sense. “heals blood”? “feels good”? Whatever English phrase it’s supposed to be, that isn’t the right way to write it out.

3. This release is shit.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_09.18_[2013.05.14_22.46.42]

English 101.

“considering only my sister lives here.”

“considering only I live here.”

“considering only me live here.”

Nice try, gg. If I wasn’t so sure you’d fuck up suicide too, I’d invite you to try that.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_10.05_[2013.05.14_22.48.29]

They’re trying to do something with the italics there, but I’m not quite sure what. Maybe it’s just a really, really limp attempt at a penis joke?

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_10.29_[2013.05.14_22.49.20]

“games that focus on girls”? Really?

“localization” doesn’t mean “write out a terrible dictionary definition for a word and pretend that will suffice”.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_10.44_[2013.05.14_22.51.03] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_10.48_[2013.05.14_22.51.11] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_10.51_[2013.05.14_22.51.17]

Ugh.

What are you saying out of the blue? -> Where did that come from?

Am I wrong? -> Oh, are you two not dating?

Don’t know why I’m bothering to throw out suggestions, since the whole script needs a rewrite.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_12.13_[2013.05.14_22.54.01]

He’s been calling her this since forever. Learn when to capitalize names.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_12.45_[2013.05.14_22.54.59]

Again, dear ESL readers, I apologize. It’s hard for me to succinctly explain why lines like this are so fundamentally wrong.

Rest assured, this release’s lines have been raped worse than coma patients. And sometimes it’s easier to pull the plug than deal with the clean-up. :(

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_13.53_[2013.05.14_23.12.55] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_13.54_[2013.05.14_23.13.00]

Even gg’s “good” lines are bad. This release is such a fucking mess.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_14.08_[2013.05.14_23.14.10]

No, the line is “She still believes that story?!”

I’m 100% certain that by this point in the review I’m only preaching this release’s failures to the choir, but I’ll be damned if I don’t provide enough evidence to bury gg till they choke on their verbal cancer.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_14.14_[2013.05.14_23.14.24]

Just because English is a “hard” language doesn’t mean I’m lowering my standards just so gg’s TL can pretend his life has any value.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_14.51_[2013.05.14_23.22.02] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_14.52_[2013.05.14_23.22.08] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_14.54_[2013.05.14_23.22.17]

It’s like an absurdist comedy performed by the Ellis Island Troupe.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_15.19_[2013.05.14_23.31.14] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_15.21_[2013.05.14_23.31.20]

I had to demux the script and go through it just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything here.

Nope, they’re referring back to a line that never existed in the first place. gg’s just that good.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_17.53_[2013.05.14_23.42.38] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_17.56_[2013.05.14_23.42.46] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_17.59_[2013.05.14_23.42.54]

That’s what she just fucking said. What in the shit?

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_21.08_[2013.05.14_23.46.53]

gg’s got this weird fucking idea throughout the release that the best way to create natural language is to use ‘s whenever possible. True, we use ‘s a lot in English, but the word “is” does also come up in our vocabulary from time to time. Knowing when to use each is pretty fucking important when it comes to human speech.

[gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_21.29_[2013.05.14_23.50.15] [gg]_Hentai_Ouji_to_Warawanai_Neko_-_05_[3C4316EC].mkv_snapshot_21.32_[2013.05.14_23.50.21]

You mean “she”. You know, cuz you’re calling the fuckpillow Barbara.

Watchability: Watchable, but not worth watching.

Visual grade: B-

Script grade: F

Overall grade: F

How do I put this? The entire script is wrong. It’s not indecipherable, but your time is better spent putting the crypto-ring away and watching another group’s release.

Avoid this like the translator avoided his English classes.

    • It has already been done. To spoil you: C-Tier. Well, so I can stick with rori oder Eveyuu for this show, C-Tier best Tier \o/

      • Thought we could have a round two just to see if Rori has improved.

Wasn’t coalguys essentially made of gg staff?

            • Their release would most certainly be better. I was informed after my review that they didn’t have an editor or a QC for that one episode.

But I’m not going to play favorites with groups. That would be missing the entire point of the site.

              • Actually all I wanted to know was if they did improve overall at all or not, and since you’ve given me a clear answer, I’ll switch to them.

  1. >You mean “she”. You know, cuz you’re calling the fuckpillow Barbara.

Compared to all the other sins committed, this is nitpicking (and coming from me that’s saying something. I give all sorts of inanimate objects names (example: computers on a network), but I don’t treat them as if they’re alive, much less human.

If you must insist on referring to Barbara with a more human pronoun, then you should be using “you”, not “she”: “What are you doing here?”

    • Stick to grammar. The point of my fix was personification of the fuckpillow for added (and contextual) humor.

  2. maybe because this show filled with such moe that everyone who worked with this lose their mind

and just watching the op gave me heart attack, that’s why I didn’t watch this show

  3. > “foul play” against “fowl play”

    > It’s an intentional pun, they make a similarly dumb one about slugs and the word “unfair” in Japanese.
    > No, this isn’t a pun. gg just doesn’t know the term is “foul play”. I think they’ve been spending a bit too much time playing with fowl themselves instead of learning English.

Sit this one w/ their editor, kthx.
I’ll be back with a bathtub full of popcorn.

      • I do know what a pun* is. And, obviously, I watched their release.

        > And there’s no way this script was edited.
D_S, if you’re certain of this, like you saw -literally- how the process took, I’d faithfully wait for Hyobu.

And ‘No’, am not mad at you or something. (Perhaps) IMO, seeing an F grade for one of the good /+ fast releasing/ groups is kind of.. not likable to the eye.

*Gratitude to Rakugo-animu plus le TL Notes and wikipedia.

        • I -literally- know what their process is, and I -literally- know what an unedited script looks like because I -literally- have analyzed more English fansub scripts than -literally- any human being.

It would only be a pun if there was a reference to a bird prior to that line. That way, “fowl” would be an acceptable substitute. But because there’s no reference, it doesn’t work. This isn’t hard to understand.

  4. >> “It did work out in just ten minutes. Kinda.”

Did gg typeset the sign right before about the ten-minute timeskip? That’s what the above is referring to, about how she fell asleep…? It worked out in the end: he didn’t get punched to death, and now he can escape and use the toilet.

What was the issue there aside from the phrasing?

    • The “did” part is the issue here. He wasn’t referring back to the typeset. That would make even less sense.

      • Obviously not literally the typeset itself, but the fact that time had passed. I thought the “did” was a bit awkward, but it’s a reference to what transpired during the timeskip (she fell asleep). Does that phrasing really imply that it’s a hook to another line, so much that you’d search the script for it?

Uh, okay, context for anyone who didn’t watch the episode:
        1. Tsukushi ties Yokodera up and rolls him up into a futon, and she’s beating him up
        2. Ten-minute timeskip
        3. He notices that she’s fallen asleep

        —Mini-TL party—
CrunchyRoll: “I see.\\It really did work out in a matter of ten minutes.”
rori: “I see.\\It worked out in less than ten minutes.”
Eveyuu: “Now I see.\\After ten minutes, it all worked out.”
Hatsuyuki: “I see.\\Things settled down after just 10 minutes.”
Chihiro: “I see.\\It really did work out in a matter of minutes.”
gg: “I see.\\It did work out in just ten minutes. Kinda.”

        • It’s not “a bit awkward”, it’s objectively incorrect.

CR: Without a reference to a prior line, this is wrong.
rori: This is an issue due to shit English, but the idea itself is fine.
Eveyuu: This is fine. Though it sounds off.
          Hatsuyuki: This is okay.
Chihiro: Less wrong than gg’s, but still wrong.
          gg: Terrible.

          • Okay, having just watched Chihiro’s episode, here’s what you should have compared:

            gg: It’ll all work out.
gg: It did work out in just ten minutes. Kinda.

            vs.

Chihiro: It’ll work itself out in a few minutes.
Chihiro: It really did work out in a matter of minutes.

            See the difference?

  5. I dunno, Sage, are you really sure you want to give this an “F”? Certainly it’s a shitty sub, but is it really as awful as WhyNot’s “I’m much grateful that you’d ask,” or SubDESU’s “then it looks like we’ll have to fight seriously then,” or Hadena’s “yesterday, the criminal who stole our magical mirror had brothers and seemed to had ties behind our back”? And is it really WORSE than D-level FFF’s “he used the BIM on landing, a suggested tactic” or Hiryuu’s “no matter how you look, it’s a huge castle”?

F-tier really ought to be reserved for subs that are genuinely incomprehensible, like classic Hadena. This gg release is obviously the product of a bad editor, but it’s an editor who’s bad because he chooses awkward phrases and handles the language clumsily—not because he’s nonnative or doesn’t know English. No native English speaker past the age of reason could watch the show with these subs and fail to understand what was going on.

I don’t demand total perfection from my reviews of college students’ subtitles for Asian cartoons, but I do feel it’s at least worth the effort to keep your rating system consistent. Recently you’ve been throwing around Ds and Fs to the point where they become meaningless, and it’s time to ask yourself: “are all the fansubs really degenerating into nonsense, or is my rating scale skewing as I become more jaded?” (Becoming jaded is only natural, but reviews need to maintain a semblance of impartiality to keep up the pretense of usefulness.)

        • Comprehensible does not mean competent. Nobody should have to suffer these subs. They’re a failure by any metric I can come up with. You really think this is b-tier material? It wouldn’t even hit that in grade school.

Your implication that I’m somehow intentionally dragging scores down really gets under my skin. If there ends up being any score manipulation, it will only be in an upward direction to reach the C+ average that I hit in every other season (crunch the numbers yourself if you want). Shit subs make it harder for me, so don’t act like I’m dropping scores with glee.

          • Apologies; not quite the implication I was trying to make. I wanted to suggest that there was a possible subconscious trend, as your level of understandable disgust with fansubbers increases. I really think if you give a sub the bottommost grade, it needs to be without any qualifiers (“it’s not indecipherable”). The very fact that these subs are not as bad as they could be should earn them a D. No way are they B-tier, but D+? I could see that.

(I also think there’s a moderate danger here of reviewing the subber rather than the subs, although that’s a whole different discussion. Bed now, before I dig myself in any deeper.)

            • I honestly believe that fansubbers are improving as a whole. And I really hate to ask this, but you are aware my reactions are comically exaggerated, right? I don’t actually judge people’s quality based on how good their groups’ subtitle releases are.

              Moving on…

If I’m just to judge subs based on understandability, then every group gets a pass. But this release was the equivalent of a google translation. And while you could totally understand the show with these subs, you wouldn’t fully be able to enjoy it. Believe it or not, subtitle quality does affect enjoyability for those able to perceive differences in quality. And I don’t believe these subs positively affect the enjoyability of this show.

With that in mind, I can’t — in good conscience — give this release a passing grade.

  6. Why is “You and me” so often being mistaken for “You and I” anyway? I’m not very confident of my English skills, but I see people doing this all the time.

    • The most common version of this mistake is “me and you.” My personal theory is that it began with the common form, “you and I are”: “I are” just looks so wrong to the native speaker that the natural response is to move the first-person pronoun as far from the copula as possible, thus turning the phrase into “I and you are.” But putting an “and” after the “I” sounds pretty weird, too, so the “I” is altered to “me.”

It’s just another example of native speakers going with what “sounds right” over what’s grammatically correct. This is why we no longer say, “it is I”—at this point almost everyone uses, “it’s me.”

    • No offense but, I believe the only word that you wanted to say is ‘shit’.

      The sentence itself emphasized it.

  7. I have not watched this episode no do I plan to, so I’m basing this purely off of the screenshot offered. Also nitpicking of the highest order but hey, chinese cartoons be serious bsns! So that said, there is one thing in your review of this regrettable release I question:

    >Do tell what a “planned” little sister is supposed to be.

“Yotei” is “plan”, and a “planned” child is, you know, what most of the first world would do in this age of widespread contraceptives. As the continued fall of average birthrates should hint to you, most people are extremely uninterested in unplanned children. “Joyful surprises” do still happen and sometimes they don’t get aborted (insert joke about certain English editors here), but it wouldn’t seem at all weird for someone to say they planned on a first/second child, or even that they had set their heart on one gender or the other (and perhaps their wallet, I guess sex selection services are a thing now, taking advantage of centrifuges and X-chromosomes being heavier then Y).

Maybe in context “Hoped for” or “Upcoming” or something would be a better choice, but no one would blink at someone saying they planned on a child in the near future.

    • Contextually, no.

The point of that screen is to show what he has Tsutsukakushi named as on his phone. Going back to the previous episode, where he mentioned he saw her as his “little sister”, it becomes pretty fucking clear what the intent behind the line was.

It should be “Little Sister (to be)” or something along those lines (I’m sure the other groups phrased it better). But “planned” brings to mind shit like “planned parenthood” and your entire tl;dr counterpoint. And that’s not what the point of the scene was supposed to be.

      • Well, gg then! I appreciate you sitting through this crap so we can fire off half-assed speculation informed purely by a screenshot instead. You’re like some sort of fansubbing Jesus, suffering for our grammar sins, except instead of turning water into wine you turn hard alcohol into reviews.

  8. Off topic, but DS, you might need to start doing Daisuki reviews. If the subs are anything like the episode description blurbs, there’s quite a bit of to be had.

As an example, here’s the blurb for “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED HD Remaster 01.PHASE-01”:

“The neutral colony of Heliopolis. The ZAFT forces commence an invasion in order to gain information on Earth Alliance mobile suits being developed there and to steal these new weapons. In an instant the peaceful colony becomes a battlefield. But a certain young man happened to be present as the Strike was attacked. This young man was Kira, and he has a chance meeting with a ZAFT pilot called Athrun….!”
