Visual Review

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_01.43_[2013.10.12_15.08.25] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_02.06_[2013.10.12_15.13.31]

Opening. Get it, guys? It’s like rainbows, but totally not! And it’s pink! Ahahahaha, such hilarity. So many laughs to be had! You practical pranksters, Commie. Where do you come up with such lolarious ideas?

Rating: Bad.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_23.23_[2013.10.12_18.56.56] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_23.46_[2013.10.13_00.03.39]

Ending. What a shitty, shitty font. It doesn’t match the ending, or the theme of the show, or even the song playing. Basically it’s just colored words on a screen with no visual impact on the viewer. Might as well put this shit in Arial and call it a day. At least that font can handle apostrophes.

Rating: Bad.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_01.20_[2013.10.12_15.07.53] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_03.50_[2013.10.12_15.15.32] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_03.57_[2013.10.12_15.15.44]

Commie often positions their text right over the signs. Garish. :(

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_04.12_[2013.10.12_15.16.08] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_04.14_[2013.10.12_15.16.16] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_04.20_[2013.10.12_15.16.28] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_04.58_[2013.10.12_15.17.11] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_09.02_[2013.10.12_18.30.49] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_09.29_[2013.10.12_18.31.48]

That’s nice, Commie. Which is the two-star?

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_09.33_[2013.10.12_18.32.02]

This sign could really only be caught on fade-out.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_09.36_[2013.10.12_23.34.10] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_09.36_[2013.10.12_23.34.21] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_09.37_[2013.10.12_23.34.35]

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_09.37_[2013.10.12_18.32.11]

I almost wish I gif’d it just so you could see how terrible the motion tracking is on this sign. Ugh.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_10.04_[2013.10.12_18.32.43] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_12.01_[2013.10.12_18.38.11] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_13.58_[2013.10.12_18.40.15] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_18.46_[2013.10.12_18.46.53]

This coulda easily been typeset.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_19.04_[2013.10.12_18.47.16] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_20.58_[2013.10.12_18.49.47]

The literal fuck is this? My grandparents might be interested, but I’m certainly not.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_21.44_[2013.10.12_18.50.50]

I don’t really get why Commie switches between white and red and black and red.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.12_[2013.10.12_23.24.49] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.14_[2013.10.12_23.24.56] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.15_[2013.10.12_23.25.02] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.15_[2013.10.12_23.25.15] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.17_[2013.10.12_23.25.25] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.19_[2013.10.12_23.25.35] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.20_[2013.10.12_23.25.40] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.22_[2013.10.12_23.25.47] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_24.23_[2013.10.12_23.25.54]

Normally I dislike it when groups cover up Japanese text when there’s room to place English beside it, but for a show like Kill la Kill which utilizes signs to make an impact on the viewer… when a large sign is supposed to hit you in the face, it makes sense for the English sign to do so as well.

Here, the English is just so small, you’re not really getting the same effect as you would with a release like Underwater’s.

The typesetting wasn’t close to as good as Underwater’s. I’m glad Commie tried, but I wish they tried harder.

Script Review

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_01.45_[2013.10.12_23.58.17]

What, is she supposed to be a shaggy Father Time or something?

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_23.04_[2013.10.13_00.00.53]

“firmament”? How deep. I’m fine with that, but do tell me what the symbolism of “grey eyes” is supposed to be and why you thought anyone would get what you were going for here.

Main Script.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_03.27_[2013.10.12_21.48.37]

I’m all about this phrasing. Wasn’t as big a fan of Underwater’s “You think you can make a move on Ryuuko, Kantou Vagabond and Guitar Case Drifter?” line. So, thumbs up on not editing this away.

For those thinking this phrasing looks a mite stupid, you’re right, but when spoken aloud it sounds just perfect for the kind of tone she’s using. I like it.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_05.00_[2013.10.12_15.17.20]

That’s nice, but it makes no sense. If you’re gonna pun, pun right. Try something like Underwater’s “cuz he’s a greedy guts”.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_05.16_[2013.10.12_15.17.42]

Thank you for giving me a chance to stroke my beard quizically, Commie. It is one of the few true pleasures a man has in life.

I do believe the word you were looking for was “clothing”.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_05.37_[2013.10.12_21.52.46]

It would be either “The raised collars come” or “The raised collar comes”. I’d go with the former.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_06.41_[2013.10.12_18.28.06]

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_14.24_[2013.10.12_22.18.04] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_17.37_[2013.10.12_22.19.41]

Why is “spec” uncapitalized? I don’t particularly care about the gibberish name, since I think most of this show’s terminology should be taken in stride, but this stands out.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_07.38_[2013.10.12_21.59.40]

Like I said in Underwater’s review, “get-up” would be a more appropriate term. It’s not much of an issue, though. More of a suggestion.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_08.00_[2013.10.12_22.02.35] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_08.04_[2013.10.12_22.02.42]

Not feeling the tense. It’s not wrong, but it’s not right. Sorta like getting date raped when you planned to sleep with them anyway.

“that power will manifest itself.”

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_15.01_[2013.10.12_18.41.39] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_15.06_[2013.10.12_18.41.47] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_15.08_[2013.10.12_18.41.53]

I went over this in the previous review so if you want a more detailed explanation, read the Underwater review. But basically, the issue here is the joke fails.

Changing “screw off” to “bite me” would allow for a joke to be made off the “masochistic” bit of tennis club captain-chan’s insult.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_16.10_[2013.10.12_18.43.14] [Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_16.15_[2013.10.12_18.43.25]

Winning with friendship and winning at friendship are different things. “at” is the correct version, so match the first line with the second.

No worries, though, Commie. You’ll always win at Engrish in my heart. <3

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_19.40_[2013.10.12_18.48.24]

Never. Change the second always to “ever” for an easy fix.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_20.08_[2013.10.12_22.21.13]

This is both redundant and logically questionable. Drop the exercise bit.

“I’m going to use you to loosen up for the Hokkaido series!”

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_21.16_[2013.10.12_22.23.21]

And I’s is Dark_Sage’s disappointment.

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_21.26_[2013.10.12_22.30.11]

I dunno, ask me in English and I might have an answer.

“Are you the woman who holds the other Scissor Blade?”

[Commie] Kill la Kill - 02 [D0F918A0].mkv_snapshot_21.34_[2013.10.12_18.50.35]

Pretty sure the general badass phrase is “ask the question again with your blade!”

Watchability: Watchable.

Visual grade: C+

Script grade: C+

Overall grade: C+

I’d just stick with Underwater.

Next up for Kill la Kill is Watashi… Not sure which ep of theirs I’ll review, but I’ll get to it sometime. I think I’ll be skipping the Kill la Kill TL Party v2 unless you all really want it.

I’d go with episode two unless you’re feeling particularly vicious.

Dark_Sage says:

I don’t exactly do episode requests. But if you’re worried about episode 1, I don’t review those.

shark0week0 says:

Forgive me I’m illiterate.

Dark_Sage says:

It’s a common question. Don’t worry about it.

I actually don’t have the policy anywhere convenient… lemme put it in the queue.

shark0week0 says:

I mean I thought the choice was between one and two lol

jimmy says:

We know that the killer, who wielded the other Scissor Blade, wears a skirt.
The dialogue also says 女.

Dark_Sage says:

Noted. Thanks.

Anon says:

At least herkz didn’t ‘edit’ it.

Pelfmiester says:

Which, based on the recent list of Commie failsubs, is why this one even made it to review.

rwn says:

Is this typesetting a joke? At least that’s what came to my mind when I saw the pictures.

Anon says:

It has to be. Even plain old {\an8} would look better than what they’ve done.

Haidaraaaaa says:

is the tracking for the sign the same as episode 1? because that was just a \move tag from what I seen.
