I didn’t really wanna spend any more time than necessary on this show, so I decided to review episode 1.

Release format: MKV (362 MB, 8-bit), AVI (174 MB)

Japanesiness: Japanese name order. Honorifics. “Ayakashi” is translated as “ghost”. “Oni” is translated as “ghost”. “Akuma” is translated as “ghost”. See where I’m ghosting with this? (Actually, I can’t remember exactly what they translated into “ghost” but it was every word that had to do with the supernatural, which I wasn’t exactly a fan of. It basically kills the nuance of each word.)

English style: American English.

Karaoke.

The opening did not air in this episode.

Ending. It felt a little busy at times and I’m not sure the kanji was necessary here, but it was a pretty decent effort otherwise.

Typesetting.

Other.

You couldn’t go wrong by splitting this line.

Too busy. Split the bottom line over two screens to fix this.

 Script Quality

Karaoke.

No problems here. Good shit.

Main Script.

“Do you want to be spirited away?” I think it’s implied by “spirited away” that she’d be going far away instead of somewhere
close.

You mean “Eastern Dragon of Forest, Western Tiger of Metal, Southern Phoenix of Fire, Northern Tortoise of Water, aid me.”

That’s how you fucking incant.

Well yes, that’s what being a branch member of a house means. Redundancy much?

“I’m a branch member of the Ugaya house.”

It should be an end.

“This is because my role as the Tamayori princess is coming to an end.”

Nice spacing.

all-important

and

slow-cooking

Cuz fuck the quality check step, right?

You mean “bewildered by”, as in “I’m bewildered by the ineptitude displayed by this line. Don’t QCs exist these days?”

This is a decent release for the show, which is a good thing because they’re the only group that’s subbing it.

  1. >That’s how you fucking incant.

“Water Dragon of the West, Silver Tiger of the East, Fire Phoenix of the North, Earthen Tortoise of the South, come to my aid!”

(tortoises can’t swim; you’re thinking of turtles)

  2. I like the sound of “Western Dragon, Eastern Tiger, Northern Phoenix, Southern Tortoise, lend me your aid!”.

    Or something.

I’d say converting everything supernatural to “ghost” is more of a tl/editing issue than japanesiness – there are plenty of perfectly good English words you can use to maintain the same distinction (spirit, ogre and demon for your examples). I’m not sure if this is a CR rip, but if so then their translator might have done it for a reason, or because they decided it wasn’t important to the story to make that distinction. Hard to say.

  3. I dunno, you probably could be spirited away one room over. Something along the same lines as whatever it is that spirits the remote control across the house when you put it down and look away. Very minor, very annoying supernatural encounters like that.
