Am I doing it right? I need to know because I really wanna fit in with the cool kids who can only express their thoughts through memes.

Japanesiness: Honorifics. Japanese name order.

I would advise against visiting their site though. The community is basically Gaia meets Reddit.

Note: There are two karaoke tracks. One with more fancy karaoke and one with more plain karaoke.

Visual Quality

Karaoke.

Opening. Works fine and I much enjoyed the typesetting. Not sure about the color choice, though.

Insert. I do love insert karaoke.

Ending. At first, the color choices make sense. But then they must have put them on a randomizer or something because they don’t match up with the girls on the screen half the time after that. Can’t say I’m particularly fond of the font here either.

Typesetting.

Linda? Aww shit, you know what it’s time for now!

Other.

Great stuff throughout the episode.

Script Quality

Karaoke.

OP/ED/Insert were fine.

Main Script.

No complaints here.

…fuck. That means I need to go back in and find good lines from the script to fill this review up. Goddammit.

These are excellent character-defining lines for Sonata. Even if you don’t get her personality from her actions, these lines let you know that she’s a happy-go-lucky character without much sense for social mores.

This is a great example of… uhh, using an exclamation mark where it’s needed.

Okay, I’m out of ideas. Gimme a break. I’m going to bed.

Timing Review

Incoming. When “Timing Critique” is added as a category, you’ll know this part is done.

Results.

Watchability: Most assuredly watchable.

Timing Grade:

Visual grade: B

Script grade: A

Overall grade (timing results not factored in): A-

This release is the only option, but even if it wasn’t, it’d probably still be the best one to get. Excellent job.

  1. The “Oh, fiddlesticks!” and “‘Cause I don’t got a ticket.” belong to Shinonome Sonata, not Kanzaki Suzuko (“Linda”).

As for the latter half of the ED’s kara colours, they’re not randomized: They’re done in a rainbow, as all the girls (across all their colours) make appearances during those lines in the later part of the ED. Praise to Calyrica from Shini-subs for helping us with the kara styling!

  2. No Haali loads open-type fonts just fine, but not when you mux with MKVMergeGUI > 5.0.1.

If you want open-type muxing to work correctly you should be muxing with 5.0.1 or earlier.

  3. Yep. Haali doesn’t support loading fonts with a MIME type other than the default application/truetype (or whatever it’s called). Older versions of mkvmerge set all fonts to this type whereas newer ones set OTF fonts to another type (which is technically the correct behaviour but Haali doesn’t like it). I ran into this issue recently myself.

I think you can set an option on more recent versions of mkvmerge to force it to set the MIME type for the fonts to something Haali supports, but it’s probably easier to just use an earlier version like 4.1.1.

I think you’ve been watching too many fansubs I think.

  5. Yeah, it was the otf font thing that broke the ED and typeset. To save the trouble, I ended up just converting all the fonts to ttf for later episodes.

    Thanks for the review.

  6. I believe HorribleSubs is using their own script for this one, and I hear it’s pretty bad at parts. Perhaps a review is in order?
