I’d like to milk that previous article’s kneejerkfest as much as possible, but I do have reviews to get to.

Visual Review

Karaoke.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_01.07_[2013.01.30_14.34.01] [JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_01.39_[2013.01.30_14.36.26]

Opening. Not a fan of flipboard karaoke (or however you call how this acts). Color/font choice is fine, but that k-effect irks me because it really gets in the way of the other syllables in a way more annoying than most k-timing is.

Rating: Okay.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_23.20_[2013.01.30_14.04.23] [JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_23.39_[2013.01.30_14.03.29]

Ending. When an individual girl is featured, the font changes its base color to match her hair color. When multiple girls are featured, the colors switch to a purplish color. I really dug the k-timing and the font was appreciably intriguing (chalk or something).

Rating: Great.

Typesetting.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_02.28_[2013.01.30_12.15.30]

Should’ve made this chapter start half a second earlier because skipping to Part A means you’ll miss out on the typeset. I’m not considering this an error, but just a heads up for the future.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_02.31_[2013.01.30_12.17.40]

Oh, you put a macron on it? Interesting choice. Don’t much see that these days.

Yeah, they nabbed a lot of the little signs and repeats that weren’t necessary to do. Yes, I appreciate the little things.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_13.13_[2013.01.30_13.06.18]

Better than nothing… I think.

Not much to say. They nailed every sign I saw that mattered, and got a bunch of them that didn’t matter. Nice.

Script Review

As it’s written, what she’s following is “her feelings” (not “a guiding light”), so it’s plural.

it -> them

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_22.55_[2013.01.30_14.32.10]

“The setting sun turns the sky scarlet.”

I don’t really know how the sky can be in the Sun.

Main Script.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_00.39_[2013.01.30_12.14.55]

This does not sound right coming from that girl’s mouth at all.

“Since the attack, the newspapers have been arriving to this island late.”

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_02.55_[2013.01.30_12.20.05]

Why do you need to have all that information shoved in there? I’d really just drop the “school” part and capitalize “style” (though you can leave it in lowercase if you wish).

And you had this as “Heaven-Shaking Style School” last episode. Why the inconsistency? Especially considering the old translation was actually a translation instead of a transliteration.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_03.00_[2013.01.30_12.26.55]

This girl is super formal — awkwardly so. That’s her schtick. You should have “whom” here to reflect her character.

But the word’s dying in the English language (and I have to look up its usage rules every time I think about it), so I can’t fault ya too much for excluding it.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_06.39_[2013.01.30_12.42.00]

Eww.

“Saegusa is the captain of the girls’ kendo team and led them to victory last year in the Nationals, even though she was just a first-year at the time.”

Well, that’s just a band-aid.

I’d rather go with something like “Saegusa led the girls’ kendo team to victory in the Nationals last year even though she was just a first-year at the time.”

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_08.25_[2013.01.30_12.59.35]

“fun”? You sure?

Last I checked, Blue-chan’s activities in class solely consisted of her walking into the room and sitting down. So either this is off, or Japan really doesn’t know how to party.

There’s gotta be a better trans–

Okay, fine Hatsuyuk-Hybrid. But at least Commie will have a better word choi–

Goddamit, Japan. This is why I’d rather write fandub scripts — so I wouldn’t have to deal with your shit.

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_12.06_[2013.01.30_13.04.39]

QCs sleeping on the job?

[JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_13.20_[2013.01.30_13.32.32] [JK] Vividred Operation - 03 [720p-Hi10P][FE9A034E].mkv_snapshot_13.21_[2013.01.30_13.32.37]

Pretty sure we’re missing out on something with the “serious” word choice. Reason being, “serious” isn’t exactly a complimentary term when you’re referring to someone directly. “You’re so serious.” for example, would never be taken in a positive manner unless told jokingly (and even then it wouldn’t be truly positive because it’s just a placeholder for “diligent”).

I want to say “earnest” would be a better word to use here, but I’d need an actual dictionary translation of the Japanese word to be certain.

Watchability: Quite watchable.

This is a solid release. If you ignore JK’s occasional stumbles, I doubt you’ll be displeased with their subs.

I’ll be checking Hatsuyuki-Hybrid’s 03 next.

TL Party Results~

Now you might be a bit confused right now about why the translation party gave you different results from what I’m saying here. After all, JK had some serious phrasing issues in episode 02 when compared to the other groups, and the majority of you did not choose them as your number 1 option. (Hell, I didn’t either.)

Well, things change from episode to episode. That’s partly the case. But TL Parties are often narrow in their focus (generally, you’re only comparing the phrasing to other groups) and they are intentionally subjective as all fuck (they’re basically a confirmation bias fiesta). And from the results some of you posted in the comments, groups tend to be separated by one or two points and that’s it. So I don’t know if you can really come to a conclusion when the only thing separating the top scorer and the bottom scorer is 2 comparison choices.

tl;dr: If the TL Party results weren’t significant to you, ignore them and focus on my review scores to help determine your best option for the show. But if they were significant, weigh those results heavily versus what I say and come to your own conclusion from there.

  1. OP effects is what it is because it was originally the ED and I had no idea it was going to be the OP. As the ED, I didn’t have a lot of room to go with since the credits scrolled or some stupid shit. I like something called “consistency”, so I wasn’t going to do a major kara overhaul.

Not like it matters, but that’s my justification for the boring effect.

  2. Ended up changing the name of the martial arts style because I actually misheard it in the previous episode’s preview (which I kind of anticipated, tbh).

It seems to be a play off of the Tennen Rishin-ryu, and I was unable to find a translation for that; everyone seems to call it by the Japanese name.

Double “this” was my fault when applying QC.

    • That’s a relief. I was thinking that even being under the effects of cold medicine shouldn’t have caused me to miss that.

  3. “I don’t really know how the sky can be in the Sun.”

Example similar usage: “the waterfall looks so beautiful in the setting sun (or sunset)”.

    • Yeah, but when using “sky”, you’d say something like “the sky looks so beautiful against the setting sun”. You wouldn’t use “in”. I could throw out the logical reason for that, but it’d just be me riffing. I think you can agree that “against” would be more commonly heard.

    • It’s 100% personal choice. ‘in the sunset/setting sun’ is quite common American phrasing, and isn’t technically wrong in any real way.

As you did, you may substitute other prepositions: the sky above the setting sun, the clouds against the sunset, the colors around the setting sun. They all work gramatically, have different shades of meaning but honestly ‘in the sunset/setting sun’ is the most common construction for the line in question, not ‘against’. It’s mere semantics beyond this point.
