After Flax’s D+ showing, you would think Commie being the best choice for this show would be a foregone conclusion. Commie disagrees.

Visual Review

Karaoke.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_00.02_[2013.08.10_23.44.27] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_00.59_[2013.08.10_23.46.34]

Opening. There were a veritable fuckton of signs in the OP that went non-typeset. I’d like to assume they were meaningless/just credits, but I don’t know for certain.

The karaoke itself was… well, Commie didn’t have much room to play around since the Japanese bit was hardsubbed. So it wasn’t altogether impressive. It was similar to Flax’s effort, but I thought Flax’s worked slightly better here when I watched it. Musta been the romaji.

Rating: Okay.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_22.53_[2013.08.11_00.50.04] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_23.03_[2013.08.11_00.50.19]

Ending. Similar to the OP, Commie had to work around hardsubbed Japanese. They… tried, I think. Much like the OP, the karaoke was similar to Flax’s, but Flax had better subtitle placement.

Rating: Okay.

Typesetting.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_01.37_[2013.08.10_23.48.56] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_06.48_[2013.08.10_23.59.45] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_07.12_[2013.08.11_00.02.54] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_07.28_[2013.08.11_00.03.27] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_08.41_[2013.08.11_00.05.40] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_10.16_[2013.08.11_00.07.45]

Terrible showing. Should’ve just an8’d it and called it a day. Though I guess that would’ve taken even more effort than what they did.

Other.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_01.44_[2013.08.10_23.49.10]

I don’t know which is worse: this chick’s blurry vision or Commie’s terrible styling. jk, we all know it’s Commie’s styling.

Script Review

Main Script.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_01.37_[2013.08.10_23.48.56]

Always fun to wake up to shit subs.

“I remember drinking with my coworkers and then leaving, but everything after that is a blur…”

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_02.06_[2013.08.10_23.50.17]

“I apologize if this seems rude,”

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_04.02_[2013.08.10_23.52.39]

Well you sure are content with writing them. English, please.

“I’d rather not have to deal with awkward explanations in the morning.”

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_04.48_[2013.08.10_23.55.35] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_04.50_[2013.08.10_23.55.49]

The only way this line would work as Commie intended would be to have the “You” accented. Otherwise, the line doesn’t read right.

I’d go with “You can have it,” instead here.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_06.48_[2013.08.10_23.59.45] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_06.50_[2013.08.11_00.00.07]

It would actually be “I hope you like them”, since “sponge cakes” is plural.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_06.53_[2013.08.11_00.00.55]

There are multiple sponge cakes there. Why the fuck are you still sticking with the singular?

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_07.06_[2013.08.11_00.02.00]

I can’t tell whether this line is supposed to be “Oh, don’t be silly.” or “Oh, you silly.” A little clarification in the script would be nice.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_07.41_[2013.08.11_00.03.45]

She’s expressing surprise that he’s the least hyper member of the family. This needs to be appropriately accented, so put the stress on “least”.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_10.12_[2013.08.11_00.07.35]

“Dude”, huh? Yes, what a brilliant translation for “senpai”. Sure got a JLPT 1 all-star team over at Commie.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_10.26_[2013.08.11_00.11.30]

Phrased with all the grace of a paraplegic tap-dancing hippo.

“But why do you have to concern yourself with what I do in my free time?”

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_11.13_[2013.08.11_00.14.09]

Where did this line even come from? It doesn’t fit with anything before it or after.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_12.46_[2013.08.11_00.17.57] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_12.49_[2013.08.11_00.18.05]

“but although, though”? Got some real brainiacs on your scripts, Commie.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_14.02_[2013.08.11_00.20.15]

Putting emphasis on words is a natural part of how people speak, and emphasis affects meaning. So when you leave it out of sentences that need it, you’re changing how a line reads. In this case, the line reads like shit.

Actually, most of the lines in this release read like shit. Send the editor back to grade school so he can brush up. Maybe he’ll only be second-from-last in the rankings this time.

“Well… I am his current girlfriend.”

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_14.27_[2013.08.11_00.22.49] [Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_14.30_[2013.08.11_00.23.19]

Uh, no. She’s thanking Chihaya here.

“You’re amazing!”

There is a difference. If you can’t tell that, then I guess Commie’s release will be right up your alley.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_14.50_[2013.08.11_00.25.15]

“I kind of get why Chihaya hates me now…”

Why the fuck would you use “know” in this context?

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_15.09_[2013.08.11_00.27.08]

This line would be parfaict if Toko were saying she intends to plow through multiple parfaits by herself. Since we’re going to assume she doesn’t want to seem like a pig in front of her beloved onii-chan, it’d be “parfait” in the singular sense.

“I’m gonna go get a parfait with Miyoshi.”

You know, like “I’m gonna go grab a burger.” or “I’m gonna grab a stopwatch and see how long it takes me to overdose on shitty fansubs.” Based on this release’s run time, I’d say under 24 minutes.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_18.57_[2013.08.11_00.36.16]

*everyone else

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_19.14_[2013.08.11_00.36.58]

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_20.16_[2013.08.11_00.45.59]

Oh, so Commie spelled her name wrong and didn’t bother fixing it when faced with the proper spelling. True dedication to the failsubbing craft.

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_20.01_[2013.08.11_00.40.11]

The presence of the “if” here necessitates a “then” that never appears. Fix this shit by dropping the “if”.

“Can’t you just tell me you love me, Ichimiya?”

[Commie] Servant x Service - 05 [9A2CFC19].mkv_snapshot_20.35_[2013.08.11_00.41.55]

So the elves she had working on them just got finished? What an enchanting script, Commie.

“I just finished making your clothes,”

You’d be better off with HorribleSubs. There’s no reason to wait around for Commie or Flax to fuck this show up.

  1. Commie actually left out the non-italic variant of the dialogue font in this episode, which is why the styling is all messed up. I don’t know if it fixes the accenting issues though.

  2. Were all the lines that you called out Commie’s edits, or did some of them exist as such in the CR subs? I could understand a lazy editing job and leaving some of the lines like these, but actually changing the lines to read like these would be pretty strange.

The only thing I’ll defend is that, while I probably would’ve used “Boss” instead of “Dude” for Hasebe referring to Ichimiya, I don’t think “Dude” is an unreasonable choice for his character and tone of voice. A little loose, but so is Hasebe.
