Opening. In the famous words of Mexico, “esto es nada especial desu”. You were right, Mom. That Spanish immersion education really is paying off.

Rating: Okay.

Ending. Same as above, but the color here makes the shitty font more palatable.

Rating: Okay+.

Most everything is typeset, though I can’t say it’s done well. One of the primary problems is the shitty encode makes the text stand out. If only a earcancerous English rock group (but I repeat myself) shared a name with a typesetting tag that would help with this problem… Oh well, guess there’s no other way.

Script Review

Main Script.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_00.17_[2013.12.18_15.16.14]

Before you spazz the fuck out, this show is about otaku, so dialogue like this is fine. Actually, it’s rather ex– Wait a sec… you weren’t gonna spazz? You’re a month past caring about this shitty season at this point? And you’re only reading this review because you feel obligated to?

Well excuuuse me, Princess Short Attention Span. Fine then. Stretch a bit and let’s go through the motions together. We’ve clearly got nothing better to do.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_00.11_[2013.12.18_20.56.40] [Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_00.21_[2013.12.18_20.57.18]

The same translation ten seconds apart for “baka ga” and “baka janai yo” (Or maybe it’s “no” instead of “yo”. I can’t tell because Japs can’t enunciate.)

Yeah, Doki sure is pushing the limits of script creativity here.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_00.23_[2013.12.18_21.01.01]

“Look who’s talking” only works as an immediate comeback. You can’t wait to use it, especially after someone interjects with a line you’re not rebutting.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_00.35_[2013.12.18_21.02.53] [Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_00.37_[2013.12.18_21.02.58]

All right, I’ll stop with the examples. By now you should get that Doki’s staff on this episode weren’t altogether experienced with human speech.

It’s not a dealbreaker by any means (the show does not rely on the banter as anything other than a vehicle for lolotaku comedy), but it is noticeable.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_00.33_[2013.12.18_15.24.43] [Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_18.10_[2013.12.18_16.04.57] [Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_18.13_[2013.12.18_16.05.05]

Don’t; Capitalize; Like; This; With; ;s.

(BTW “sports” is plural.)

Spells used are untranslated. Of course, they’re also intentionally gibberish in Japanese, so I suppose I’ll overlook Doki’s transgressions this time.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_06.36_[2013.12.18_15.31.33]

You can expect Japanese script logic in this release. It doesn’t get to release-detracting levels (and I know some of you prefer such scripts), but it’s there. Fair warning to any blue-bloods out there.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_04.54_[2013.12.18_21.55.04]

Limited edition goods like preorder bonuses aren’t “rare items” (hell, I keep all mine in drawers and boxes). Come the fuck on, this isn’t a goddamn RPG.

At least have consistency in your terminology.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_06.09_[2013.12.18_22.13.37]

With writing this bad, you could be the next Joss Whedon.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_06.40_[2013.12.18_22.15.07]

the JSDF. This shit’s an acronym, which means it stands for something, Dokitards. Might try writing it out fully next time to see if it makes sense.

[Doki] Outbreak Company - 06 (1280x720 Hi10P AAC) [2B4199BF].mkv_snapshot_07.59_[2013.12.18_22.17.44]

One of my main problems with this release is the general dialogue that fits well enough to be understood, but not well enough to actually be right.

Switching out “idea” for “plan” would fix this particular line, but the “often off” feeling can really only be addressed with deeper rewrites.

Can’t say I hated this script, but it really wasn’t my style at all. But if you can get past the niggling doubts that something’s not quite right (or if you weren’t the least bit phased by what I pointed out), I think you’ll be fine with Doki’s release.

  1. >BTW “sports” is plural.

“Sports” can be singular when it’s used in its more abstract, collective sense, like as an entertainment genre (e.g. “Sports is more interesting than reality TV.”) or industry (“College sports is a huge business.”).

Though I’m pretty sure the British would use “sport” in those cases.

    • I planned on it. Then I didn’t. I promised to try on the Kyousou reviews, but I said nothing about Outbreak!

(There wasn’t anything that really required cross-checking.)

  2. Aw, they didn’t even try on that 汚れちまった悲しみに line. Not that I’m a poet either, though.

Apparently the published translation is “Allu’this sullied sadness.”

  3. Actually skimming some of the screenshots in the english section, technically for:

“I will have JSDF help with the construction…”

couldn’t JSDF be an adjective and help a noun? Like in “We will have FBI assistance in this investigation.”

idk the context though so maybe the line can’t/shouldn’t be read that way.

    • Yeah, it can be an adjective. Wouldn’t work in this case, though.

“I will have help with the construction of the location.” itself doesn’t fit, since the person speaking (the girl) isn’t really the principal builder of the soccertorium. She’s also not the person who proposed the idea. So it doesn’t make much sense for her to say she’s going to have help with doing something.

It’d be arguable if the person speaking was MC-kun and he was taking the position of “Yo Princess, I got this.” But even then the argument would only be over whether it’s objectively wrong or not. I can’t say I’d be much in favor of the line even then. “I will have the JSDF help with” is much clearer in any of those instances.

  4. Actually, it’s “Esto no es nada especial”, in spanish we use double negation. But I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic, so…

    • Probably best not to take my Spanish seriously. I don’t know enough of it to be witty with it either, so I generally go for the gibberish/obviously wrong route, because I always fuck it up anyway when I try.

      I’m like the Mexican Hadena.

  5. Since this is a nit-picky site, in “(or if you weren’t the least bit phased by what I pointed out)” I think you should have used fazed instead.
