Opening. It’s not a particularly amazing kara, but it is interesting to see kanji making a come back. …even if it is only for the OP.

Rating: Okay.

I’m sorry, hold the fuck up, Otaku. I know this guy’s got his brain scrambled harder than a skullfucked schizophrenic, but whose dick was in your head when you thought this line would fly?

Honestly, I don’t doubt the authenticity of the base translation, but do understand you should be more focused on conveying ideas than directly transcribing them… especially when they don’t make sense in the target language.

[Otaku] Glasslip - 07 (1280x720 10bit h264 AAC) [4E3EBC34].mkv_snapshot_02.19_[2014.09.11_18.50.41]

Script QC is   not real QC.

You really expect us to believe she said “thirty-one dot zero zero”?

If it’s straight 31, say “31 seconds even”. You know, like a normal person would say.

There’s some discussion in the comments over this particular critique. If you want some more opinions on the subject feel free to check there, but as of now it looks like my original comment stands.

[Otaku] Glasslip - 07 (1280x720 10bit h264 AAC) [4E3EBC34].mkv_snapshot_03.28_[2014.09.11_20.57.29] [Otaku] Glasslip - 07 (1280x720 10bit h264 AAC) [4E3EBC34].mkv_snapshot_03.30_[2014.09.11_20.57.35]

There are scenarios where you’d use envious over jealous, but this isn’t one of them.

Why wouldn’t you say “cheering”? Fuck, your imagery in this show’s worse than I imagine your selfies are.

This isn’t necessarily incorrect, but you sure as fuck should have phrased it better. Make it clear that it’s not just a single check-up in the earlier scene, since it’s sort of an important plot point for the episode.

[Otaku] Glasslip - 07 (1280x720 10bit h264 AAC) [4E3EBC34].mkv_snapshot_08.10_[2014.09.11_18.59.18] [Otaku] Glasslip - 07 (1280x720 10bit h264 AAC) [4E3EBC34].mkv_snapshot_08.12_[2014.09.11_18.59.47] [Otaku] Glasslip - 07 (1280x720 10bit h264 AAC) [4E3EBC34].mkv_snapshot_08.16_[2014.09.11_18.59.55]

For anyone who read that like a normal person would, that third line is supposed to be referring to Retard A and Retard B’s relationship, not Yana and Retard A’s. Throwing italics around the “our” would fix that problem.

Yes, it becomes clear later on, but if you confuse your viewers at first and then “fix” the issue later, you’re still interrupting the viewer experience.

drifts. “circle of friends” is singular.

  1. I remember looking at the subs weirdly for the ultra specific “31.00 seconds”.
After re-watching the scene I figured it was more appropriate, and correct, than a straight “31 seconds” as she mentioned breaking 32 seconds in the previous line. This would imply there are times between 31 & 32 seconds.

On top of that, she is talking about race times, which are often calculated down to hundredths of a second. Yana is seemingly educated in these aspects of timing, and the younger girl likely knows this, which means she would know to be that specific in relaying what her goals are. This keeps them on the same page that she wants to lower her time below 31 seconds rather than 31.XX seconds.
These are people who actively participate in sports, competitively or supporting someone who is, knowing this stuff is fairly basic. It fits the characters far better, this benefits the average viewer.

    • The point is how it would be phrased in conversation. How would you state 31.00 seconds other than “31 seconds straight” or “31 seconds even”? Cuz it’s currently read as “thirty-one dot zero zero”.

      • As a former sports club member (rare I know), my former teammates would actually phrase their goal as “3 minutes and 5 point zero-zero seconds”. At races it would be announced (regardless of how large the difference in times) that Team A’s time was “X minutes and Y point Z seconds”.
Although it is expected to do that at events, it is still a common occurrence outside of the events, too.
So I would always go with “31.00” when two or more characters involved in competitive sports are discussing times.

        • Yana’s not in competitive sports.

Either way, as you have the experience I’m gonna rely on you to tell me what the line should be.

Is “I’m gunning for thirty-one point zero zero seconds by fall!” truly the best option?

          • She is involved in supporting her brother to a degree, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt.

“I’m gunning for thirty-one point zero zero seconds by fall!” is definitely the best option here, in my opinion.
I have heard that line with many times my own ears when I was active, only differences being the specific times.

            • Noted. I’ll amend the review accordingly, thanks.

Also, could you use an email when you post in the future? It can be a fake one (I don’t do anything with people’s emails anyway) but I have to manually approve every comment that lacks an email before it shows up on the site, which can be annoying for both me and you.

              • Eh no one in US sports says “thirty-one point/dot zero zero”. You would say “thirty-one seconds FLAT” which implies that. Further when speaking for split seconds (31.5) while you can say “thirty-one point five” most would say “thirty-one five” as the someone familiar with sprints would know to translate that as 31.5 since they know its going to be in seconds.

Taking it one more step splits like “31.52” would usually be pronounced as “Thirty-one fifty-two” and almost never “Thirty-one point fifty-two” however if its just one decimal point its not too uncommon.

However some coaches will always refer to times with “point” when they call out the time to help the runners know how they’re doing. But even then NO ONE will ever say “Thirty-one point zero zero” they’ll say “Thirty-one flat”.

                  • Looks like I jumped the gun on “fixing” my critique then. Good to hear I’m not going crazy.

I’ll just add in a bit about having people check the comments for further discussion on that piece and that should suffice.

                    • Not crazy, Koshk has a point about announcers who would use “point zero zero” but no athlete speaking casually would say such a cumbersome thing to a friend.

                • I find it odd that you’ve not heard people stating times like “thirty-one point zero-zero.”
We had multiple coaches and they all said it the same. Let’s not forget that in this context it is someone listing their specific goal.

As for “X seconds flat”, I’ve only heard people who are not involved in sport, particularly younger people, using that. In fact I haven’t heard times being (seriously) stated like that for many years.

As for people skipping “point” altogether and just listing 4 numbers, that is definitely something I have never heard. Maybe “thirty-one point five-two” rarely, but never “thirty-one fifty-two.”

                  • As I mentioned coaches almost always included “point” into the times they say. However this isn’t a coach talking but a runner. I’ve done 3 sports with timed events. Track, Swimming and Cross Country, excluding the last since they don’t list anything less than a second normally all my coaches always used “point” for any time that wasn’t an even second. Considering the chance of that happening is one in a hundred its very rare for coaches to read you off a time that is “X seconds flat” however as an athlete we usually set our goals in even seconds for long events or for short sprinting quarter seconds (like the 100m).

Again to hit it home one more time this is a student stating her goal for a time to another student, if this were an announcer for an event yes you would be correct they would read it “Thirty-one point zero zero” but that isn’t the case here, this is a student talking to another student and they wouldn’t be so ‘formal’ with the time goals.

Also while I didn’t personally compete at the college level several of my friends do at the University of Oregon and when they talk about times they still say “X seconds flat” in regards to their next goal for shorter events.

                  • I don’t think you’re lying, but your experience with how people talk about times seems to be wholly different from mine. Where in the world did you grow up hearing people talk like that?

  2. I did a quick QC pass report on this, as on the other eps, and I can kind of agree with the assessment of the show. It’s pretty meh other than chickens.

    re: sound of waves tickles
People were saying he has synesthesia, which I think is legit. Anyhow, maybe this makes sense in the context of his supernatural visions / hearing stuff powahs. The line is weird, but he’s weird, and this show is dumb enough without needing to be dumbed down further.

    re: space space
Happened after I saw the script. *whistles*

    re: 31.00
Yeah, pretty much, though I think with “seconds” dropped it’d be a bit better (but 31 seconds flat is superior regardless). But imho this is in fringe lil-sis-being-overly-enthusiastic-about-dem-decimal-points phrasing territory and arguable.

    re: envious vs. jealous, wishing
I think this is a Brit kind of thing. Probably should’ve mentioned it, but for cases like these I just kind of chuckle when the TL’s Brit shows through.

    re: wishing vs. cheering
Same as the above to some extent, but I can definitely agree with these points.

    re: check-up
I hardly remember the plot of the show when watching the thing, but I thought the implication was that Sachi ended up staying longer than she (or at least her friends) expected. She told them it wouldn’t be serious, just a check-up—that kind of thing.

    re: our relationship
Don’t know how it is in Japanese, but if it’s not specified there, the ambiguity (which is resolved later) in that line could be legit. I really don’t know, though.

    re: circle of friends drift
When watching I did a search for this phrasing and saw nonzero and more than “circle of friends drifts.” That might just be evidence of bad grammar elsewhere, though. There’s been a deterioration of subject-verb agreement in common usage with prepositional phrases like that in the middle. More importantly, “circle” in this usage acts like “group” would, and that definitely can be either plural or singular. If individual people in the group are drifting apart, then it can be argued to be plural.

    re: Halpis Water
Pretty much already covered. I spent a while in confused mode, asked about wtf a Halpis Water is, and shrugged. Project leader preference is generally to do cultural references straight-up.

  3. Actually, “envious” is correct in that context. Being jealous means that you’re afraid that something you own (whether it’s a possession, a boyfriend/girlfriend, or what) will be taken away by someone else. Being envious means (roughly) that you don’t like that someone is better than you in some way (better skills, has better things, etc.)
