Shingeki’s like what Berserk would be if the loli witch was somehow more of a slut. And I mean that in the best possible way.

Visual Review

Karaoke.

Opening. I find it funny how so many fansubbers claim to know Japanese, yet when it comes to dialogue they can’t easily transcribe into Google Translate, suddenly it’s indecipherable to even native speakers. Gotta protect dat fansub rep, ya know.

"There's Japanese in this scene? How the fuck am I supposed to translate that?!"
“There’s Japanese in this scene? How the fuck am I supposed to translate that?!”

Luckily for viewers, unlike Commie (which I disqualified for le epic reddit memerie), eraser saw fit to translate the part of the dialogue they could actually understand… so at least we’ve got something to work with.

And it’s not bad.
Still, it’s incredibly unambitious for what could have been an interesting OP. Damn shame fansubbing’s only creatively bankrupt when it’s not pandering to middle schoolers.

Rating: Okay.

Ending. It’s readable sometimes, I guess.

Rating: Meh.

Had to show all the end card screen variants so you could see how the typesetting holds up across them. Only the most thorough reviews here on Crymore!

Script Review

Main Script.

[eraser] Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis - 04 [EFE6F4CA].mkv_snapshot_00.43_[2014.11.12_00.00.27]

This is one of those lines that seems clever at first blush, but when you turn the lights on… bam! pterodactyl joke.

Ptero11

For this line to actually work, it’d need to be, “I’m a god with a capital G.”

Remember that there are multiple gods in this series, and the Judaic god of the gullible is (presumably) included, so you’d really only use “God” in reference to It.

[eraser] Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis - 04 [EFE6F4CA].mkv_snapshot_03.43_[2014.11.12_21.44.53] [eraser] Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis - 04 [EFE6F4CA].mkv_snapshot_03.46_[2014.11.12_21.45.33]

they, them, they, their, them. How about a little differentiation here?

It’s not impossible to figure out what’s going on from the context provided, but that’s no excuse for sloppy writing.

[eraser] Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis - 04 [EFE6F4CA].mkv_snapshot_11.17_[2014.11.12_00.11.49]

Now this is a confusing edit. Afro Bounty Hunter tends to talk in nuthin’ but slanglish. So the fuck’s “do you not” doin’ here?

[eraser] Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis - 04 [EFE6F4CA].mkv_snapshot_12.20_[2014.11.12_00.14.41]

If only there were a word for “valuable stuff”… Curse the inefficiencies of the English language!

[eraser] Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis - 04 [EFE6F4CA].mkv_snapshot_12.55_[2014.11.12_00.15.23]

Shit outta brains more like. Which, taking into account the zombie theme of the episode series, sorta makes sense.

Editing.

I had planned to make this section a compilation of all the good edits eraser made from the Funimation script… but all the eraser lines I wanted to use were either the same, or just as good, as the ones in the official release. So yeah, can’t go with that option.

Yeah, I know.
Trust me, I know.

Since Funimation hardsubs their shit, I couldn’t see if eraser put much effort into their edit or not, so we’re just gonna pretend they did, cuz I already wrote the review. Just keep in mind that you’re likely not gonna see much of a difference between this release and the HorribleSubs one in terms of the script.

Overall grade: B+

If you want your Shingeki ASAP, you oughta stick with the HorribleSubs rip, as eraser’s is pretty similar to it. That being said, this is definitely the release to archive… if only because it isn’t garishly hardsubbed.

As to whether the show itself is worth watching or not…

Favaro Leone
You know it is, sweetheart.

  1. It’s pretty hard to go right with a serif font.
eraser did a nice choice with that one. It fits the anime’s art very well.
Also, the krk styling was great. Shame on your taste, Sagey-kun.

  2. “There’s Japanese in this scene? How the fuck am I supposed to translate that?!”

    Lyrics (guesswork, huh):

I’m ready for protecting the key!
Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
    Runnin’ toward the sun!

  3. How come you don’t mention black levels in the visual portion of the review? Horrible Subs rips from FUNimation and it’s always darker than the RAWs I’ve seen. eraser appears to encodes off of RAWs. Doing a side by side comparison you can see more compared to HS when it’s dark on screen.

    • Generally I’ll only bring the encode up if it’s noticeably awful. Encode is the last consideration on my mind when choosing what TV release to download.
