With how many times Cthuyuu shit the bed in this release, you’ve got to wonder if they can only get off to the smell of their own feces.

If I gave you webms for this Google Translate cancertrash, your internet would probably kill itself.

The typesetter appears to be the only person in the Cthuyuu joint who justifies his share of the world’s carbon.

Script Review

Main Script.

This part isn’t what set me off, but these examples should show you why even if you can tolerate memesubs, Cthuyuu is probably not gonna be your release of choice.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_00.39_[2015.11.01_08.21.31] [Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_00.43_[2015.11.01_08.21.38] [Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_00.47_[2015.11.01_08.21.46]

Nonsensical gibberish permeates the release like Cthuyuu are getting paid for each line they infect. (They probably wouldn’t even get paid much, which makes it that much worse.)

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_05.55_[2015.11.01_08.39.54]

I didn’t realize Hot Topic was selling pick-up lines now.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_09.58_[2015.11.01_07.48.32]

You know guys, you are allowed to translate lines into English. Maybe an option to consider for the future.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_10.11_[2015.11.01_07.51.57] [Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_10.15_[2015.11.01_07.52.09]

W… What?

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_11.05_[2015.11.01_07.54.11]

“Heroified”? You know what they called it in every fucking show where a character transformed? A fucking transformation, you lexicon-starved fucks.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_09.54_[2015.11.01_07.48.12]

Did any native speakers look at this release? Fucking hell.

Grammar Time

ESLs, the issue here is that you use “a” prior to words that start with a consonant sound. And “an” prior to words that start with a vowel sound. Because “useless” starts with a consonant sound (You), it needs “a” here.

If you’re using subtitles to improve your English, this is not a release you’re going to want to consider.

Try hard, fail harder.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_03.32_[2015.11.01_07.40.57]

From the fuckwits who brought you “bipolar” as a translation for “tsundere”, comes an even more desperate grasp at becoming relevant to their vision of “the youth”.

You can practically smell the dated thirst on their shit-stained breaths.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_07.58_[2015.11.01_08.43.54]

Now, I want to make something clear: I have no problems with “offensive” or “inventive” dialogue in anime subtitles. As long as the lines enhance the scenes and feel like they naturally belong there, that kind of phrasing only contributes to a more enjoyable viewer experience. Nobody wants to be bored (well, except Aria fans, but life is better when you pretend they don’t exist).

What does set me off is when the dialogue doesn’t match the characters or the show. And as you’ve already surmised, the worst case is what we’re being presented with here.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_08.08_[2015.11.01_07.46.00]
A chicken? Of all the animals to choose, you chose chicken?
When you watch Cthuyuu’s version of Taimadou, every tool-written insult will only serve as a wrenching reminder that you’re not watching a faithful or accurate translation of the show. (Taimadou sucks, but that’s beside the point.)

Rather, you’re being force-fed some friendless poser’s best attempt at an anime-oriented comedy routine. Even the homeless have better things to do with their time than suffer through that.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_08.11_[2015.11.01_07.46.08]
Forced memes are the dankest.
The type of subs Cthuyuu are peddling are the kind of poison that made people run from fansubs to official sources as soon as they could. That Cthuyuu would still go this route in 2015 speaks volumes as to their judgment.

Nice Hits
The numbers say even more. I still can’t believe anyone would get out of bed for less than 10k.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_18.11_[2015.11.01_08.15.05]

And more memes, of course.
Whatever you think about the concept of jokesubs, all but the most unreasonable neckbeards should be able to agree that the joke track should be offered as an option… and barring that, it should at least be funny. Here? No go for either of those. It’s all as forced as the only sex these guys could ever get.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_09.48_[2015.11.01_07.47.51]

Watching Cthuyuu’s Taimadou is like watching that acne-riddled tryhard you knew from high school try to impress others with lines he learned from old Family Guy episodes. Nobody wants to clue him in on how awkward he makes everything, cuz that’d mean you’d have to actually fucking talk to him.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_11.08_[2015.11.01_08.05.20]

Is loser contagious? Probably not, but it’s safer to not find out.
But I’m gonna be the nice guy here and let Cthuyuu in on how bad they’re making everything.

[Cthuyuu] Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai - 04 [720p H264 AAC][6081045F].mkv_snapshot_23.18_[2015.11.01_08.19.37]
Force more alliteration and maybe Sage-senpai will notice you!
Cthuyuu devs: Consistently inaccurate English combined with a seedy sense of phoniness underscores the uselessness of this release and your very lives. Your inability to provide half-decent anime subtitles serves as a textbook example why forced euthanasia should be legalized.

Since I’m afraid I’ll lose you if I use too many words, I’ll sum it up with this: If you killed yourselves, no one would bat an eye.

If you disagree, I’d welcome you to prove it to us all. May I suggest a Drano cocktail? ^_^

Just go with HorribleSubs. I’m writing off anything Cthuko or Hiryuu do from this point going forward. As if the scene needed another nail gun taken to its rotted coffin.

  1. Can’t imagine they had any intention on providing good subs for this or they would have just added all these memes to the CR script. Or maybe they hate the show too.

As bad as this script was, I don’t really see how you’re supposed to translate desu wa. What they should’ve done is established a speech quirk for her earlier in the show, like lyger did with Sylphinford’s desu (they had it as “splendidly”, which was pretty good).

What did Crunchy Roll have for that line?

    • “How I worry people so!”

Please don’t make me review Crunchy’s too. I can already feel my soul struggling to escape.

      • That’s not too bad. All that “desu wa” shit is a hallmark of a posh ladylike register like Usagi uses, so a prissy line like “How I worry people so” is at least in keeping with that character and the tone.

I don’t know what else they could have done. “Indeed it is, indeed it is” maybe.

Well in any case I thought the CR subs were basically decent, and whatever else I can now see they’re far better than Cthuyuu’s release. Holy fuck these are bad. Channel Awesome bad.

So, this season, instead of reading fansub reviews, one can just look at the download numbers?

Since you brought it up: What is the proper localization of “tsundere” (and “yandere” while we are at it)?

    Reply
    • I’ve heard “hot and cold” sometimes used, or “cool or spicy”. Regardless of which, bipolar is way too strong for a tsundere character. That isn’t a love/hate relationship, it is a switch between manias and mass depressions.

      • Weeeeeeell, if you’re trying to suggest that people always use these terms in their perfect, medical definitions, then I’ve got some bad news for you…

        Reply
    • There is no one-term translation for those. You can’t always expect a 1:1 match between languages, which is a reality that seems to frustrate the most cancerous part of the fandom.

      Reply
    • Can we get a proper translation for tsunami and sushi while we’re at it? God I’m so sick of weeaboos using these all the time, speak american dammit.

    Most people watch illegal streaming.
So, what now? Does subbing itself have any meaning these days?
People don’t give a damn about translators. They probably don’t even know Crunchyroll.
    It’s kinda sad but true.
