Visual Review

Karaoke.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_00.29_[2013.06.22_22.36.35] [EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_00.50_[2013.06.22_22.37.18] [EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_01.19_[2013.06.22_22.37.59]

Opening. They have fucking stars in the karaoke, a nice karaoke effect, and… reasonable colors. Pretty fucking good for a one-off.

Rating: Good.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_22.53_[2013.06.24_00.15.34] [EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_23.11_[2013.06.24_00.15.59]

Ending. They matched the chalkboard theme here from the title. I would have liked to see the karaoke avoid the credits, but like Commie’s, I don’t think that would be possible. What they had here works pretty well, though.

Rating: Good.

Typesetting.

Is there any reason why this wasn’t typeset other than laziness? I doubt it was because it was too difficult. Though I may be overestimating the quality of EveTaku’s typesetters.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_05.16_[2013.06.23_10.16.43] [EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_05.42_[2013.06.23_10.17.15]

EveTaku kept the smiley faces as they were in the Japanese version. Commie did not.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_13.17_[2013.06.23_21.57.06] [EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_22.13_[2013.06.24_00.13.14] [EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_23.35_[2013.06.24_00.13.27]

And that’s it. I wish EveTaku had typeset a few more signs, but what was there was decently managed.

Script Review

Main Script.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_10.34_[2013.06.23_21.38.28]

Gonna want a comma after “return”. Dummies.

I didn’t find anything else worth noting as problematic (at least not that I’d be willing to ding other groups for if I found it in their scripts). But maybe someone can spend another couple hours poring over an EveTaku script to find non-issues that I could put here. That’d be nice.

Characterization a.k.a. Grade Justification Section.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_12.31_[2013.06.23_21.41.03] [EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_12.32_[2013.06.23_21.41.08]

EveTaku nailed down the bratty little kid vibe Pink-chan had going on. Commie’s lines also fit the scene (It’s stupid, though. // I’m a better singer than ClariS.), but EveTaku’s just made me want to slap her till she learned some fucking manners. And that’s effective writing.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_12.37_[2013.06.23_21.41.17]

Similarly, their lines for Blue-chan hit on that crybaby attitude you’d expect from her.

Commie’s was “Kanakana! You can’t badmouth ClariS!” which isn’t as good because “can’t” is too strong for her character. You’d want “You shouldn’t badmouth ClariS!” or something similar.

[EveTaku] Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai 2 - 10 (1280x720 x264-Hi10P AAC)[820136ED].mkv_snapshot_16.54_[2013.06.24_00.01.13]

Commie: “Mikagami, that’s impressive!”

In general, EveTaku had better dialogue for the characters than Commie did. There were a few points where Commie had the better line (Commie’s “Love ya!” vs. EveTaku’s “I love you~” for the ending of a phone conversation between besties), but for the most part, EveTaku came out ahead, and in an impressive manner.

I was told (after having finished half this review), that the regular TL was out for this episode. But they had the regular TLC fill in, so I don’t know how much of a difference this will make compared to the other episodes of the show. I would assume not much of a difference.

If you want to enjoy the series (and I assume you do), it’s best to avoid Commie’s butchering of character personalities and go with EveTaku’s version. It’s worth whatever wait it takes.

Cool. Seems I made the right choice for this. Good to see a couple of A’s recently.

Nevreen says:

I can’t even really take credit for this episode’s script, because lyger requires very minimal editing. I mostly make sure he knows that harass only takes one ‘r’.

Fyurie says:

As a staffer on the project, this caught me by surprise, but I’m happy to see some credit given to it for once. A lot of people saw our bumpy start and switched off.

My love didn’t cease.

thecowgoesmoo says:

So basically all we need to do is copy and paste the typesetting Commie’s non-overlapping typesetting into this, fix the TS for consistency a bit, and we’re good to go.

>But maybe someone can spend another couple hours poring over an EveTaku script to find non-issues that I could put here.

Challenge accepted.

Okay, now that I’m actually awake enough to prioritize: http://pastebin.com/nkz9Zz5L

lygerzero0zero says:

I was aware of the difference between envy/jealousy, but that’s -really- pedantic, and how many native speakers actually pay attention to it when talking? In modern colloquial usage, “jealous” includes the meaning “envious”.

If a different character were speaking, I’d have made the distinction. Maybe someone severe or bookish would be concerned with precise language. But it seems very odd for Kyousuke, who’s a pretty casual guy, to pay that much attention to traditional usage distinctions. I would consider “envious” to be the worse choice in this case since it breaks character.

thecowgoesmoo says:

Then using the argument of “Everybody does it”, I suppose you think “ClariS'” is acceptable? I ask only because you didn’t mention it, since you didn’t mention it. And by the same standard, in your subs you would have Kyousuke say alot, since that’s now become commonplace. Is that true?

>If a different character were speaking, I’d have made the distinction.

If “jealous” and “envious” are equivalent that would mean that either word could be used in that line. So please elaborate how the latter would break character, because you seem to be saying you made a conscious decision to use “jealous”.

I hope you don’t take offense when I say that the script is peppered with a number of issues that causes me to question your control of nuance. The “is attending” springs to mind… unless you are claiming that that, too, was a deliberate choice?

Some alterations to those 8+:

Rather than “Forget about it. Come with me.”, “That’s not important right now. Come with me.” would be more fitting.

With the “Hold on tighter bit”, it’s been brought to my attention that the second line (i.e., chest) does actually follow my devil’s advocacy. So in fact it’s “Hold on tighter” that needs to be fixed in order for the exchange to be coherent.

lygerzero0zero says:

They are not equivalent. People who are educated enough to know the difference and fastidious enough to pay attention to it in casual conversation would use “envious”. Were Kyousuke an English speaker, he might or might not fit the former criterion, but he certainly would not fit the latter.

If I had used “envious” in that line, then imagining myself as a viewer, that word would stand out to me, and say to me, “Kyousuke is the sort of person who is anal enough to care about using ‘envious’ properly.” Of course, all viewers are different, but this is my perception of what counts as colloquial speech and what counts as formal/nitpicky speech.

thecowgoesmoo says:

As to your question about how many people are aware of the difference between jealousy and envy, the first page of results for Google query https://www.google.com/search?q=jealous+envious is almost entirely comprised of the question, “What is the difference between jealousy and envy”? That seems to indicate (if we trust in PageRank and Google Panda) that quite a few people are at least aware that there does exist a difference even if they can’t articulate it.

Good gods.

Nevreen says:

Just to address a few things in this review:

-The excessive honorifics and Japanese terminology were a conscious choice, because the show basically revolves around how much of an otaku Kirino is. The show’s intended audience is people familiar with anime tropes, so we felt safe reflecting that in the subs. We know it’s not for everyone, and Commie or CR are perfectly fine alternatives if you don’t like ours.

-The TS lacking in some places was due to our being rather late with this episode for a variety of reasons and our only TSer being very busy that week. We told her to focus on the more important signs (like the calendar and cellphones), while we felt safe ignoring the chat, because it was read out loud, and other lesser signs, because they weren’t as important. This is more of an excuse than anything, and there’s nothing wrong with D_S pointing it out in his review, but fara works hard on the show, and I hate to see her be called lazy.

-This isn’t related to the review, but, yes, we know we fucked up episode 1 pretty badly (and episode 2 to a much lesser extent). This was cykia’s (our TL) first time fansubbing, and I dropped the ball early on. We’ll be fixing shit up for the batch.

To be fair, every song in this show (except the normal OP, which was actually used as the ED for this episode) only occurs once. Also, on older computers, the kara for this episode’s ED (again, the normal OP) is going to lag like all hell.
