Visual Review

Karaoke.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 08 (720p x264 AAC) [DC4AACA5].mkv_snapshot_01.49_[2013.09.14_10.17.40] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 08 (720p x264 AAC) [DC4AACA5].mkv_snapshot_01.58_[2013.09.14_10.17.55]

Opening. Hearts show up when the lines come in and then you get a rather pink karaoke for the rest of it. I liked it; fit the theme very nicely.

Rating: Good.

Ending. The karaoke complemented the credits all nice and good-like. Enjoyable.

Rating: Good.

This is not a sentence. I refuse to accept it.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 08 (720p x264 AAC) [DC4AACA5].mkv_snapshot_23.40_[2013.09.14_11.23.43][DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 08 (720p x264 AAC) [DC4AACA5].mkv_snapshot_22.40_[2013.09.14_11.22.32][DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 08 (720p x264 AAC) [DC4AACA5].mkv_snapshot_23.28_[2013.09.14_11.23.24]

There are a lot are a lot of issues with needless with needless repetition in the ED.

Main Script.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_00.46_[2013.09.28_13.33.25]

“couple of girls” != “couple”

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_04.31_[2013.09.28_13.36.26]

While mischievious is technically a misspelling, I’ve heard it pronounced with the extra “i” more often than not, so I’m inclined to say this variant spelling is acceptable. (It should actually be “mischievous”.)

My issue with the line comes in more with how it’s phrased than how one word is spelled. The general idea of the line gets across, but it hurts to make my brain come to the conclusion it needs to. A simple rephrase would be much less harsh to my cranium.

“Well, I don’t think there’s a soul at Fujijo who could get the jump on me.” {Oh look, you can simplify the line.}

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_04.35_[2013.09.28_13.36.35]

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_07.57_[2013.09.28_13.41.11]

No DDY, you can’t transliteral your way out of this. These lines are as crusty as a dead man’s smegma.

As one would expect -> That’s so Raven Mizushima {I’m joking. Come up with something on your own. You can do it.}

It can’t be helped -> There’s not much you can do

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_07.14_[2013.09.28_13.40.23]

At least you didn’t call it “lewd”. Try “Isn’t this getting a bit too risqué?”

Honestly, I’m not some kind of English rainman. Go to thesaurus.com or some other shitty site and type in words that sort of fit the situation until you come to a term that actually does. “good enough” is NOT good enough. Depending on how you want to edit this, you could even choose different terms. Maybe “hot ‘n heavy” fits your style better. If you’re more conservative, try “heated”. You have options.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_08.16_[2013.09.28_14.11.08] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_08.23_[2013.09.28_14.10.29] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_08.26_[2013.09.28_14.10.21] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_08.27_[2013.09.28_14.10.48] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_08.28_[2013.09.28_14.10.54] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_08.30_[2013.09.28_14.11.00] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_08.33_[2013.09.28_14.26.44]

unacceptable

You guys know this scene was supposed to be funny right? So why’d you inject it with crystal fail? I nearly OD’d, you pricks.

There’s not even limited advice I can give to fix it — this scene is totaled. Delete it (and your editor) and try again.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_09.47_[2013.09.28_14.28.08] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_10.35_[2013.09.28_14.29.12][DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_19.56_[2013.09.28_14.40.50]

If you can replace mom/dad/son/etc with the people’s names, then they should be capitalized.

Also, the second line has a double-space after the period, which is not the standard the rest of the lines in the release followed.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_12.39_[2013.09.28_14.31.37]

The rest of the release stutters with syllables, but DDY stuttered on the first letter in this line. Be consistent.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_12.43_[2013.09.28_14.32.01]

Comma splice. Tsk, tsk.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_12.54_[2013.09.28_14.32.26] [DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_12.56_[2013.09.28_14.32.32]

eat -> ate

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_16.50_[2013.09.28_14.37.01]

I wish there was a shelter where people who suffered English abuse could go. Fansubs would ensure I’d never have to pay rent again.

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_18.45_[2013.09.28_14.39.35]

Mizuhima? We got a new character or something?

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_20.45_[2013.09.28_14.42.19]

Earlier,

[DameDesuYo] Love Lab - 07 (720p x264 AAC) [78FDCDB3].mkv_snapshot_22.13_[2013.09.28_14.44.09]

That’s not how to stutter.

Tips for DDY (easy fixes):

Common translations (shikataganai->it can’t be helped) are lazy writing. Generally you can better get across the intent of the scene by relaying a meaning that relates back to the translation, rather than giving an awkward word-for-word TL.

Keep to your standards. Either double-space between sentences or don’t (very, very, very few groups double-space, so I wouldn’t suggest it). Determine how you want to handle stuttering — first letter stutters or first syllables.

Get a QC.

This was better than their 08 release’s v1, but it sure as heck wasn’t better than Crunchyroll’s release. I’d suggest going with CR’s subs for this show.

    What if you write “teacher” or “master” instead of the name of the character? Should it be capitalized in that circumstance, too?

    • Uhh, sometimes. I’d say “yes” in general with those words. For example, “Hey, Sensei.” is gonna generally have the “teacher” bit capitalized. But uhh, capitalization sorta depends on speaker intent and familiarity with the person of address. So, while a schoolkid might say that to their teacher and have it capitalized, in the context of a guy meeting up with his friend at a bar and jokingly referring to him as “sensei”, “Hey, sensei.” would be more appropriate. Because the point isn’t really “Hey, Jon.” it’s “Hey, mister teacher guy, wanna sit down, have a few drinks, and then drunkenly hit on girls half our age?”

      When it comes to “master”, intent also matters. If it’s in a maid cafe, they’re pretending to be intimately familiar with you, so it’d be “Welcome back, Master.”

      Does it make much sense? Not really. What I can say is that in the context of family, titles should always be capitalized (I’m not coming up with any circumstances where they wouldn’t be). Outside of that, speaker intent rules the capitalization decisions.

      *Note that I used “sensei” in place of “teacher” because in America at least, no schoolkid will ever address their teacher as just “Teacher”. If the person’s name was Mark Markensfield, they’d address them as “Mr. Markensfield”, which makes translating “sensei” a bit difficult.

  2. *high fives back*

    Thanks for the re-review D_S! And guess what? We have a full staff next season including an experienced editor which this release did not have. :3

    • benga’s right, it’s not exactly a QC we’re missing,(heh)it’s an “experienced editor”.

      08v1 was not QCed, 07v1 was. It’s like a before and after!

      Unfortunately, that’s not enough to earn higher then a C.

      Thanks again for the re-review!

    It was at this point that I started reading this post in the voice of Kelsey Grammer.
