Disqualified, Fansub Review — By on January 6, 2014 3:54 pm

Don’t worry, fansubbing ain’t dead!

What a disqualification means:

If the difference between an original script (from Crunchyroll or Funimation or Viz or Daisuki or whatever) and a “fansub” script is not significant, I will disqualify the group from my standard review process and label them fakesubs so they feel shame and want to kill themselves.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t download a disqualified group’s release, since I’m sure you care to some degree about typesetting/karaoke. But you can be certain it’s going to be a lazy effort, with not much difference in the subtitles between the fansub release and the official one. And sometimes groups, with their very few script changes, actually end up making the script worse.

Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to point any such mistakes here.

Play along at home:

  1. Rip the scripts from each file with MKVExtract. (I use MKVExtractGUI-2.)
  2. Open them up in Aegisub or something and normalize the scripts so they can be compared. (Remove \N (line breaks), {} (comments), typesetting, and karaoke.)
  3. Open up both scripts in one instance of Notepad++.
  4. Use the Compare plugin (separate download) to compare the scripts.

There. Now you can shut the fuck about your stupid webcompare sites that only look different from my results because you’re a fucking moron.

Sugoi Differences

Click to enlarge. The main changes Commie made are: honorifics removal, minor punctuation changes, and a few line rewrites.

Sugoier Differences

[Commie] Nobunaga the Fool - 01 [2F9C19DB].mkv_snapshot_03.56_[2014.01.06_13.29.01]

Original line: “Stop talking like my shithead dad.”

While “shit-head” isn’t wrong per se, “shithead” is the much more commonly accepted spelling. So I’m not quite sure why Commie put in the effort to change this when they hardly touched anything else.

[Commie] Nobunaga the Fool - 01 [2F9C19DB].mkv_snapshot_04.10_[2014.01.06_13.30.02]

Original line: “Thanks to Clan Lord Nobuhide-sama’s efforts,”

Yes, this is one of the issues with a quick “gotta throw away all the honorifics” edit. Luckily in this case it only fucks with the flow of the sentence, rather than rendering it unintelligible.

“Thanks to the Head of Clan, Lord Nobuhide’s, efforts,” would be an easy fix to let people know that “Head of Clan Lord” isn’t a title.

[Commie] Nobunaga the Fool - 01 [2F9C19DB].mkv_snapshot_04.15_[2014.01.06_13.30.48]

Original line: “But there still are other warrior lords to reckon with, such as Takeda and Uesugi—”

This is a risky edit because it requires you to assume that Takeda and Uesugi are roaming around, unchecked, on Owari land.

Even assuming Commie totally knows the story of this series perfectly, they should have kept the second comma that Crunchyroll had.

[Commie] Nobunaga the Fool - 01 [2F9C19DB].mkv_snapshot_04.33_[2014.01.06_13.31.30] [Commie] Nobunaga the Fool - 01 [2F9C19DB].mkv_snapshot_04.34_[2014.01.06_13.31.34] [Commie] Nobunaga the Fool - 01 [2F9C19DB].mkv_snapshot_04.35_[2014.01.06_13.31.40]

Original lines: “Sure smelled great, anyhow.”//”Was she a beauty?”//”Well, sure.”

Unless Commie was aiming for failure here, I don’t think they hit their mark. I mean, please.

If you don’t see many problems with the script based on the above lines (they did better than usual), then you can assume the Commie release will be, on the whole, better than the HorribleSubs version. But with so many mistakes in the original HorribleSubs script that were left unfixed in Commie’s version…

…I can’t really say Commie’s providing a valid reason for you to wait for their subs. Cross your fingers that a group that cares is going to sub this. Well, assuming you haven’t already dropped the show.

El Huesudo II says:

Despite Macross, I don’t see why people are even picking this up.

I mean, this is gonna be a christian mecha show. CHRISTIAN MECHA SHOW. That’s even worse than christian rock.

Dark_Sage says:

I… what?

Deadlight says:

Ooh, will Jesus Christ be piloting a mecha?

FalseDawn says:

I’d watch the hell out of that. The Christian butthurt would be delicious.

El Huesudo II says:

Yeah. Oda Nobunaga? Jeanne D’Arc? Leonardo Da Vinci? A search for a “Star Messiah”? Yep. Christian as FUCK.

(Yes, Nobunaga was a die-hard atheist, but he allied with Jesuits and funded the construction of the first Christian temple in Japan, so he still counts as Christian influence. Whatever.)

Nyangoro says:

Yep, this is definitely gonna be the anime they show in church once this hits the States.

snackb says:

i thought that moslem mecha show would be awesome(that arab “anime” doesn’t count”
i mean, the pilot shout “aloo snackbar!” while piloting explosive mecha

Dark_Sage says:

So, like an anime version of Four Lions? I’d watch that.

onanianon says:

>Where do Muslim robots go?

FalseDawn says:

You win an internet. Well done.

Dark_Sage says:

shi0nmaku says:

I’m speechless…

snackb says:

you sir owe me a pair of sides

Nyangoro says:

*raises hands*

Jesus, take the cockpit!

Dark_Sage says:

That’d be a bit more entertaining than the last anime Japan made about Jesus. http://www.crymore.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/loljesusanime.jpg

Qrius says:

How about Saint Onii-san? Haven’t watched it yet, but it sure looks hilarious

Dark_Sage says:

Haven’t seen it either, and I probably never will. Way, way bottom of my backlog.

Solaristics says:

What isn’t at the bottom of your backlog.

Dark_Sage says:

Got me there~

Anon says:

Thank you Commie for keeping _real_ fansubbing alive, and not being those “minimalistic” fakesubbers.

El Huesudo II says:

Not to mention their top English quality.

nitre says:

epic fail as usual commie.

sangofe says:

How can anyone calling themselves fansubbers completely change the tl of a line? blergh.

myxpytls says:

wow commie made a copy paste XD

myxpytls says:

Btw is there an english fansub that makes karaoke for this anime? or atleast the english pronunciation of the jap words

Vince says:

Wow all this hate for people trying to help out the anime community. If you don’t like their subs then don’t download or watch it, you don’t have to make big ass hate posts. this is so immature you ARE getting this shit for free if you’ve forgotten.

Dark_Sage says:

I’ll give you a box cutter for free if you promise to slit your wrists with it.

Vince says:

LMFAO are you serious? And commie isn’t the only group that does this dumb ass, allot of groups do not translate shows from scratch 100% of the time they just do EDITS or reword it. Also they don’t give you anything you leech from them.

Dark_Sage says:

Yeah, dude. Post your address. <3

Solaristics says:

You should read the rest of his posts.

Dark_Sage says:

Just got done with that thread. I was sort of aware some guy was whining about stuff while I was at the con, but I didn’t look too much into it then.

Solid, solid content.

Solaristics says:

It’s a review, what else did you expect? A+ for just trying?

Vince says:

It’s a *biased* review, what else did you expect? A+ for just trying?

There I fixed it for you. =)

Bneundh says:

LOL not sure if serious. They’re disqualified for a reason, and this review is not in any way biased so just suck it up if your precious group had failed you.

Anon says:

Even Dark_Sage agrees with you and totally admits he’s biased here. Just look at all this bias, it’s sickening:
