This is a list of the new season animes released up to this point, sorted alphabetically, and it includes my reviews where applicable. Basically, it’s a tl;dr reference guide. No new content, but nice for the lazy.

Henceforth, I’ll be making a few different changes to the format and my review style. Nothing major, but when people keep bringing up the same points, I can’t help but listen. For example, focusing on the negative is great for releases that suck, but what’s the point in pointing out a few “gotchas” on good releases? I just need to step up my game a bit. Also, a few of my previous suggestions were stupid. I’ll make sure that I focus more on quality suggestions.

30-Sai no Hoken Taiiku

SubDesu [Review Here]

Doki [Review Here]

SubDesu’s release did not even resemble English. Unwatchable.

A-Channel

Doki [Review Here]

Eve-Taku [Review Here]

pwq [Will Review Later]

I really wanna give the Eve-Taku guys a nod here for having an excellent first release, but Doki’s release edged theirs out in my eyes.

Battle Girls – Time Paradox/Sengoku Otome

HorribleSubs [Review Here]

Kyouki-Tsuki [Review Incoming]

I heard K-T fixed every error I pointed out. I’ll need to confirm this for myself, but I’ll err on the side of caution and say go with their release.

Dog Days

Interrobang [Review Here]

Ayako [Review Here]

Hina-Hiryuu [No Review Yet – will review their release of episode 2]

Jury’s out on Hina-Hiryuu, but I have a good feeling about their release. Between Interrobang and Ayako, the choice is clearly Interrobang. Ayako can’t edit.

Dororon Enma-kun Meramera

gg [Review Here]

gg did an excellent job.

Hanasaku Iroha

Underwater-Commie [Review Here]

Hayatsuki-Tsuki [Review Here]

Doki [Review Here]

HorribleSubs [Review Here]

Splazm [Will Not Review] (Splazm appears to be a straight CR re-encode group)

I actually liked every release listed here. The differences are minute enough that you really can’t go wrong. But the best release, in my mind, is Underwater-Commie.  Their English was the best.

Hen Zemi

Interrobang [Review Here]

HiNA-Wasurenai [Review Here]

Interrobang’s release had many English errors, but it made sense. HiNA-Wasu’s release had fewer errors, but it didn’t make sense at all. This wasn’t just me who thought so, I asked around and got the same response from other subbers (including those on the HiNA-Wasu joint).

Kaiji Season 2

Nutbladder [Review Here]

There’s only one choice.

Lotte no Omocha/Astarotte’s Toy

HorribleSubs [Will Review Later]

Maria+Holic Alive

Commie [Review Here]

They did well.

Morita-san wa Mukuchi

Kata-Subs [Will Review Later]

Nana to Kaoru

GotWoot [No Review Incoming] (I was a QC on this, hence, biased)

Bitch-Subs [Will Review Later] (I heard these guys did a great job)

SubDesu [Will Not Review] (lol, SubDesu)

Kata-Subs [Will Review Later]

ANE [Will Not Review] (Re-encode of other subs, and I’m not qualified to bitch about encode quality)

Nichijou

Doki [Review Here]

Underwater-Commie [Will Review Episode 2]

HorribleSubs [Will Not Review] (Reason: U-C)

Coalgirls [Will Review Episode 2]

I made a screenshot comparison post here. It appears most people thought Doki had a worse translation.

Ore-Tachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai

HorribleSubs [Will Review Later]

Shikkaku [Will Review Later]

lilgh0st/MSPN [Will Not Review] (Dropped)

Sekai-Ichi Hatsukoi

Akatsuki [Will Not Review] (Sorry, not really interested in this kinda series. )

HorribleSubs [Will Not Review] (Same reason)

Sket Dance

HorribleSubs [Review Here]

Hatsuyki [No Review Yet]

I can’t recommend one or the other until I get my ass on reviewing Hatsuyuki’s version.

Softenni/Soft Tennis

Ayako-Nishishi [Review Here]

FFFPeeps [No Review Yet]

I edited for the Ayako-Nishishi joint. You can expect it to be the best damned Ayako release you’ll ever see. But I’m not going to dismiss the other group’s release just cuz I’m not in them. The FFFPeeps review needs to be done before I can offer a legit argument either way.

Steins;Gate

Commie [Review Here] (Note: I was drinking rageahol when I reviewed this)

UTW-Mazui [Review Here] (They dropped the series)

Steins;Subs [No Review Incoming] (I took a quick look at their CR-ripped script and compared it to Commie’s. It was worse.)

HorribleSubs [No Review Incoming] (Commie edits off their release, making this inferior by default.)

Splazm [No Review Incoming] (I believe they also rip from CR without any major edits.)

HorribleSubs-Remux-NFR [No Review Incoming] (CR Re-encode)

Uhh, your only choice is pretty much Commie. They didn’t do too well on the first episode, but they’ll hopefully do better for the next ones.

Tiger & Bunny

Commie [Review Here]

YouSmell [Will Not Review] (Hardcoded fonts as small as possible. It’s not their fault, since they just ripped the stream release, but I’d wait on Commie)

The only real version available, but they did well.

Toriko

A-Destiny_SGKK [Review Here]

The translator for this release decided to ignore the editor’s suggestions and this mess is what resulted. I’m assuming they’ve learned their lesson and will fix their shit on the coming episodes.

X-Men

Commie [Review Here]

Weapon-X [Will Not Review] (I think this group uses the same script as Commie… Am I wrong?)

Commie by default.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san

Interrobang [Review Here]

WhyNot? [Review Here]

Thoughts: WhyNot?’s English was a lot better, but Interrobang’s translation made more sense when compared to WhyNot?’s. For example, WhyNot?’s introduction features an irate woman saying she’s going to kill a man. Akutabe says he’ll get a devil to take care of it. The woman responds that she’d like to take care of it herself.

IB’s version explains that she’s angry at her son-in-law. Akutabe says he’ll present a case that would allow her to get divorced from her husband and receive a consolation payment. The woman responds that won’t make her any happeier. When you get that specific, either you’re bluffing your way through, or you actually know your shit and don’t have to guess.

  1. Don’t believe Weapon+ uses same script as Commie. I believe they use official subs, but Commie might use those too…

New day in fansubbing where groups wait until others release to check what Dark_Sage had to say about the editing ┐(‘~`;)┌

  3. Wow you’re starting to become some kind of influence on the fansubbing world. So many people immediately went to bash Doki’s Nichijou release based on your review of JUST the first episode.

HAH! Pussy. Afraid of your secret inner urges?

It’s much better than you might expect. (I honestly didn’t know what to expect.) The actual romance, in the first episode at least (not counting the OVA ep 0, which is just a prologue), is only a tiny fraction of the plot.

See the various reviews at ANN: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2011-04-02/ . Only one reviewer gave it less than 3.5 stars out of 5.

  5. You can probably save yourself one review from NtK by omitting ANE since it looks like they just used GotWoot/BitchSubs/SubDESU subs. I also highly doubt they did any editing since they’re all gung-ho about encoding and just encoding.

Keep up the good work, Ji-hi 2.0 o/

    • Gotcha, thanks.

Hmmm… that gives me an idea for a massive format overhaul maybe for next season. Oh, Harth, you bring out the best in me~

  6. The Weapon+ release of X-Men is not the same as Commie’s. It’s very different. The one thing I noticed immediately is that they really messed with the way Wolverine talks.

  7. Here’s to an interesting blog that keeps me entertained. I do hope that you manage to give an overall summary of shows for this season and try to do one for each season, with of course recommended sub groups for an additional bonus.

On a different note, we’re looking for an editor for m.3.3.w, so if you feel obliged by filling in please send me a PM later.

  8. *each upcoming season. Reason I say this is because well I reeaaally don’t watch a lot of anime per say, so I like a good recommendation for something that would spark not only my interest but others as well. We all have weird tastes, it just takes a little bit to find that show that meets our needs.

    • Lemme know how you like my Opinions posts, then. Got a couple coming up.

I’d love to join m.3.3.w, and while I would usually jump at the chance to join such a well-known group, I’m overextended as-is with college, other fansub groups, and this blog. So I’ll have to decline, but thanks for the offer.

    Pfft, you failure.

Seriously though, I love your fansub reviews and hope you keep on doing them; they’re a fun read and put the whole editing scene in a new perspective for me.
