Fansub Review: [Commie] Busou Shinki (Episode 01)

This post was written by Dark_Sage. He is Dark_Sage.

I tried to watch this episode without writing a fansub review, but I found myself screen shotting everything anyway.

I… may need help.

Visual Review

Opening. I have no idea what the fuck they were thinking. If you’re gonna phone it in, at least shove a white font in there, not a yellowish one.

Rating: Okayish.

Ending. The blue works really well in parts, but this karaoke screams for color changes based on the scene. This could have been pretty good but it ended up only mediocre.

Rating: Okay.

I’m going to make a wild guess and say herkz didn’t typeset this one.

Script Review

“The Sun is guiding me”

“toward two miraculous paths I can take” {Though I’m gonna guess this is a mistranslation/needs some TLC love)

“Even if we are hurt on the way,”

“and a million years pass,”

“the future where I can be with you is what I choose”

“I’ll do my best”

“to not miss the Sun’s sign”

Main Script.

This is not a hard script. How the fuck are there any errors?

“one thing” is singular. When a singular noun is the subject, follow-up with “are”. Use “is” with singulars.

“Well, they say the one thing most important to young boys”

“is the books they hide under their beds.”

“the books” is not the subject of the sentence, but I can see where the confusion would arise for someone just learning English. If this really blows your fucking mind, just go with

“Well, they say the most important things to young boys are the books they hide under their beds.”

“even that” implies a comparison to something else. But nowhere else in the script does there exist something which she could be talking about. So this is pretty much just shit English.

“He used to cheat a bit and stand on his tiptoes,”

“which was just the cutest thing ever!” <- The “just” is used for a colloquial touch.

No! She’s referring to the aforementioned books. “I’m certain they’re supposed to be hidden under a bed.”

I heh’d at this. It’s a much better option than just going with a standard “what i–!”

The… The what?

You mean, “the runner-up of last year’s Busou Shinki Tournament?!” ?

I hope you do because this is a laughable attempt at English otherwise.

The “was” makes it seem like it was burned before they got it. A more appropriate word in this context would be “got”. It lends actual significance to the apology.

Was the editor on this a native? It’s actually a difficult distinction to make without extensive knowledge of the English language, which makes me wonder.

This would be fine if she were projecting her jealousy onto someone else. But she’s not. Drop the accent and maybe slightly rephrase it.

“Hey, I’m not jealous or anything!” <- Read as “Someone else is the jealous one, not me.”

“Hey, it’s not like I’m jealous or anything!” <- Typical tsundere line.

Why’s the first part so lengthy?

Now that the move’s over and done with -> Now that we’re done moving in

Come on, Commie.

Watchability: Watchable.

Visual grade: C-

Script grade: B-

Overall grade: C+

The amateur editing errors combined with shit/non-existent typesetting and “eh” karaoke don’t result in a strong release. But Commie’s the only group releasing this that’s not named Hadena, so you don’t have much of a choice~

Hmm, felt like I ran through this one. Speed rush. Here, have a shitty AMV set to a great song to celebrate.

    • Sweet. Guess that makes me a better typesetter than herkz now. I’ll start talking with authority on all typesetting-related matters from now on.

      • airco only asked me to typeset the titles so that’s what I did.

Also the song translation is mostly wrong and were fixed in episode 2 since the official lyrics are out already.

  1. Dark Sage, I may find your taste in anime… questionable… at times, but your taste in music is batting 1000 so far. Metric is fucking great. I would listen to Emily Haines sing the phone book.

Anyway it sucks that nobody is doing a great job with this show, but the show itself is pretty stupid so it’s not like it’s a terrible waste or anything.

  2. Stupid me…I kept checking every day, when meanwhile, THIS EXISTED.
    Dammit. :(

Ah, well. Good to know you’re back :P
