Okay, this is the last time I’m gonna say it this season: there are checkboxes. Use them if you feel you need to select more than one option. For example, in a case where two groups have the exact same translation, you can select both of them, so there’s no need to flip a coin.

Translation Party House Rules:

Spoiler:
1. Translation Parties are intended to help you make the best subtitle choice for a given anime. Choose which line(s) you liked best by selecting them with the checkbox.

2. I split the Party into two parts — Essential and Extended. Assuming you want to get this shit over with quickly, just go with the Essential choices. I picked these to be the most representative lines in the releases. But if you’re one of those people who want more comparisons to help you come to a decision, go with the Essential choices and the Extended ones.

3. If you didn’t like any of the lines, choose the “N/A” option. The results for “N/A” won’t be automatically tabulated, so you’ll have to do the math in your head. Have my gomens and nasais.

4. A “>” indicates that another character has begun speaking. If there are three characters in a line comparison, I will indicate the third with a “>>” and so on for more characters.

5. Group order is randomized for each screenshot, every time you refresh the page. However, the “N/A” option will always appear at the bottom of the screen.

6. Your results will be summed up when you click the “Get your results” button. Feel free to vote in the poll at the end/post in the comments to let others know how you did and to compare your results with them.

7. Party hard.

The word “Humankind” bothers me. It always sounds to me like someone mixed up mankind and humanity. And “Galactic Alliance of Humankind” just sounds stupid.

    Reply
    • Humankind is a proposed gender-neutral “mankind”, but I agree: “humanity” fits the bill without being an awkward word that doesn’t roll off the tongue.

      Reply
      • Are you sure that’s how it’s used? It sounds quite silly considering “human” isn’t all that gender-neutral to begin with. I guess they have different roots and the Germanic “mann” could be considered more heavily gendered than the Latin “homo”. But it still sounds silly.

        Reply
        • Actually, IIRC, mann wasn’t gendered at the time mankind was coined, and humanus (or homo, for that matter) never has been. Mankind just appears to be discriminatory as man has also referred to males for, what, a millennium?

Commie won the essentials against UTW-Vivid (5 vs. 3), so I am not not sure about who to go with here. Just don’t go with Hadena or HorribleSubs.

I just have to say that it really bothered me that for Essential 8, every group besides UTW-Vivid used “are” and “they” with the collective noun. A singular verb should be used except when members of the group act individually. I ended up choosing “N/A” because I didn’t like UTW-Vivid’s last line.

Commie’s 02 has a number of typos and general fail, plus the encode is not good. UTW-Vivid improved over episode 01, and show good use of idioms. UTW is 100% the group to go with now, whereas after 01 I thought they were even in quality with Commie.
