This is apparently the most difficult show in the world to sub, ever. Why else would everyone fuck it up?

Opening. The flip effect was enjoyable and the colors were spot-on. No complaints.

Rating: Great.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_22.30_[2013.05.06_23.34.27] [Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_23.06_[2013.05.06_23.35.12]

Ending. This was a bit too mono-color for my taste. The subtitle placement was perfect, though.

Rating: Okay+.

Typesetting.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_03.05_[2013.05.06_22.39.29]

How is “classics” the title of a class?

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_03.08_[2013.05.06_22.40.22]

It’d be nice if I knew what “it all” was referring to.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_06.41_[2013.05.06_22.56.19]

Pretty clever.

Naisu.

These are minor signs I wouldn’t necessarily expect to have been typeset.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_15.01_[2013.05.06_23.20.40]

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_15.39_[2013.05.06_23.21.47]

Purple text works so great here, doesn’t it?

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_17.13_[2013.05.06_23.26.10]

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_17.17_[2013.05.06_23.26.26]

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_23.34_[2013.05.06_23.08.10]

And that’s all the typesetting.

Other.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_03.05_[2013.05.06_22.39.29]

Purple font? Why? If you wanted to color it, the thematic colors of this show are green and orange. Purple makes no sense and looks pretty out of place. Bad call.

Script Review

Main Script.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_03.15_[2013.05.06_22.41.01]

High-tier hilarity in the house!

Yes, Eveyuu, I know you and Hatsuyuki were referring to the earlier reindeer line here. However, this line has to make sense by itself for the association to work, and it doesn’t.

I’m afraid you’re gonna have to be placed on my knotty list. And by that, I mean a list of people who should kill themselves by hanging. Tie that knot hard and hope your neck snaps after the first jump!

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_04.21_[2013.05.06_22.43.39]

1-in-256

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_04.23_[2013.05.06_22.44.19]

Jesus, have you never played Dragon Quest? You don’t encounter metal slimes while they’re fleeing. That makes no sense.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_04.31_[2013.05.06_22.45.28] [Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_04.33_[2013.05.06_22.45.36]

And again with the fleeing. And again it doesn’t work.

I get that you’re trying to link these thoughts together, but you can’t just throw shit at a script and hope it sticks. It will just end up right back on your face instead.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_05.52_[2013.05.06_22.54.03]

“But one time when we did, she made it for me as an apology.”

Was that so hard? Also, split these lines.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_05.58_[2013.05.06_22.54.57]

Uh, no. That hill’s not “in” their property. It’s “on” it.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_06.55_[2013.05.06_22.56.48]

I’ve been over this enough times that I’d rather not repeat myself.

Moving on…

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_09.45_[2013.05.06_23.10.01] [Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_09.48_[2013.05.06_23.10.08] [Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_09.53_[2013.05.06_23.10.17]

She’s verbally batting his words back at him here. Jesus cock-fucking Christ, how the fuck is this such a foreign concept to you? It’s script-writing 101.

“Tsukiko’s life is my business.” or something.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_12.18_[2013.05.06_23.16.56] [Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_12.20_[2013.05.06_23.17.02]

That’s not a logical response at all. Since he said “just”, the natural response would be “It is just your problem.”

But since that doesn’t make much sense — this issue definitely affects more than just him — it’s better to change the first line to “It’s not my problem, is it?!”

Honestly, it’s ridiculous that you can’t even manage this basic shit. Have your editor stick a lightning rod in their urethra and wait for divine punishment.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_12.34_[2013.05.06_23.17.44]

Ladies and gentlemen, the brilliant combination of EveTaku and Hiryuu! I hope it was as good as you were expecting because it’s not getting any better.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_16.12_[2013.05.06_23.22.33] [Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_16.16_[2013.05.06_23.22.42]

The Crunchy version has this as “moles”, which makes more sense since birthmarks aren’t common enough to make counting them a believable occurrence.

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_17.33_[2013.05.06_23.26.59] [Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_17.34_[2013.05.06_23.27.12]

And with a neuro-pillow, learning English what?

You can’t just leave a line open like that and expect…

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_18.18_[2013.05.06_23.28.08]

Why, are, there, commas, here?

[Eveyuu] Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. 04 [Hi10P 1280x720 H264] [832AB226].mkv_snapshot_21.01_[2013.05.06_23.32.20]

Oh come on, using commas is not that hard of a skill to master. Ask a third-grader if you really need tips.

I really hope Chihiro or gg can put together a decent release, cuz groups have not been close to meeting expectations for this show.

  1. Had I been given a choice of which oversubbed show to work on, I would have picked this one (and not just because the bar seems to be pretty low). Oh well.

  2. “Classics” is just “classical studies”. Like stuff about Ancient Greece and Rome and whatnot. All it is is a lazy way of saying it.

    • If you would want to actually sing along (god knows I don’t), the flippin’ text would give you a hard time, though.

  3. Plenty of brain farts. I’m just going to throw some butthurt comments out there, seeing as I worked on this. Two errors happened while applying QC (a/an and the last one), apparently. But at least three clear errors slipped by me, so that’s my bad.

But anyway, does “today” need a comma in that context at the start of a sentence? (see #4)
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/today

I thought the birthmark was a bit weird. But I checked, and it apparently can include all sorts of things, including moles:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthmark

For the neuro-pillow line, I thought the point was that she wasn’t making a lick of sense and was trailing off the sentence without finishing it. The joke was that the line was broken in the first place? Or not.

A more localized line about Santa and naughty lists was TLC’d to Santa fainting, and that’s what Hatsuyuki had, so you could kinda blame Japan.

“I can say it now. I can say it because of now.” I don’t mean to throw anyone else under the bus, but I still don’t know what this means either, and that was noted.

My original suggestion was to take away “fleeing” from those DQ-reference lines because that phrasing doesn’t really work. But I agreed to keep it eventually. I probably should have actually figured out a way to tie them together in a way that makes sense.

    • No, definitely. Throw as much at me as you want. If I’m wrong, I’ll update my reviews to reflect it. There’s no downside to objecting. ‘Course, I’m inclined to bat it back.

By “present time”, #4 doesn’t mean today today. Like it says, it’s a substitute for “these days”. “These days you seldom see horses.” “Today you seldom see horses.”

There is a type of mole that’s a birthmark, yes. Read the Wikipedia article further and you’ll see it’s referring to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congenital_melanocytic_nevus
The scene is supposed to be cute, right? Do you consider that cute?

Tons of Japanese sentences trail off. I don’t think that means English translations should.

If you guys had a decent line and your TLC nixxed it, then that’s the TLC’s fault, not Japan’s.

      • Nah, the grades don’t interest me. I’m just here to be disagreeable now and then and to occasionally learn something.

I knew I was missing something today (har har). Seemed like there should’ve been a comma, but somehow I convinced myself otherwise yesterday. Could’ve borrowed commas from elsewhere in the script. I should’ve wiki’d birthmarks harder too. ( ¬‿¬)

Lots of Japanese lines trail off, while most translated lines shouldn’t and don’t. But in that context, I think it’s legitimate for somebody speaking English to not finish that sentence. She’s clearly embarrassed, and the idea is pretty retarded.

Well, I’m still trying to figure out an appropriate workflow for this show. At least I’m catching the majority of issues, but I know I can do better.

        Reply
        • >She’s clearly embarrassed

I figured that she was embarrassed because her love for her sister and her marriage plans were discovered. To me she seemed blissfully unaware of how dumb she was.

          Reply
          • I get what you’re saying, but it’s hard for me to unsee my first impression of the scene (which was obviously influenced by the line you see there, whereas yours might not be).

Even if she’s just embarrassed about being found out, that’s enough for speech patterns to be affected. But I think she knows that that line is stupid (or in the very least, she’s particularly embarrassed by it). When she mentions learning English, that’s exactly when she looks away in shame and goes to the fish face expression. Immediately afterward, the sweat drop appears.

      • That “today” doesn’t look like it’s modifying the whole sentence, meaning the comma is optional and recommended to be omitted.
Plug “comma after adverbial” into Google to find people explaining it a lot better than I ever could.

No, no, no, NO! That’s supposed to be “DonQui/DonQui” because it’s lampooning the Don Quixote discount chain stores you’ll find in Japan.

What? You’re saying my translation doesn’t make sense anyway? Do you think I give two shits?

    Reply
    • Of course I didn’t actually read it and only now realized that it averaged out to a B-tier because of a good visuals grade despite the script so… ignore me, but also maybe put both grades on the home page so that lazy asswipes like myself who don’t actually read articles can get an accurate view :P.
