I was gonna wait for the HorribleSubs release and the Crunchyrip groups to get their subs out, but… this translation party was too much fun to leave languishing for a week. Maybe I’ll do another TL Party for episode 2 or something.

Translation Party House Rules:

Spoiler:
1. Translation Parties are intended to help you make the best subtitle choice for a given anime. Choose which line(s) you liked best by selecting them with the checkbox.

2. I split the Party into two parts — Essential and Extended. Assuming you want to get this shit over with quickly, just go with the Essential choices. I picked these to be the most representative lines in the releases. But if you’re one of those people who want more comparisons to help you come to a decision, go with the Essential choices and the Extended ones.

3. If you didn’t like any of the lines, choose the “N/A” option. The results for “N/A” won’t be automatically tabulated, so you’ll have to do the math in your head. Have my gomens and nasais.

4. A “>” indicates that another character has begun speaking. If there are three characters in a line comparison, I will indicate the third with a “>>” and so on for more characters.

5. Group order is randomized for each screenshot, every time you refresh the page. However, the “N/A” option will always appear at the bottom of the screen.

6. Your results will be summed up when you click the “Get your results” button. Feel free to vote in the poll at the end/post in the comments to let others know how you did and to compare your results with them.

7. Party hard.

I must’ve been born under a solitary sign.

The sort who live by their own rules and are still accepted by those around them.

Commie :: I wanted to make high school the time of my life!
But at this rate the time of my life’ll be postponed until judgment day!

Vivid :: I was supposed to make a fresh start in high school,

Decision Point:

  1. Those ten were enough. Show me the results.
  2. I could do with ten more choices, so I’ll keep reading from here.

Expanded 1.

Anime-Koi :: It was a world unlike any I’d ever seen.
A world so far from me, I never thought I’d be able to reach it.
Yet I was on the verge of entering that world.

Commie :: It was a new world.
I thought it was distant and had no relation to me.
Just then I stepped into that world.

Vivid :: It was my first time seeing this strange, new world.
It was a place I once thought had nothing to do with me,
a place I thought I could never reach.
But here I am, about to set foot in that very place.

Anime-Koi :: Hello there. You’re Yamato Yura-chan, right?
>H-Hello.
You’ll be rooming with Kashima Sonora-san, a senior.
She returned home for the break,
but I’m sure she’ll be back soon.
Be sure to get along.

Commie :: Hey there.
You’re Yamato Yura, right?
>Hello.
Your roommate will be Kashima Sonora, a twelfth grader.
She’s visiting her family right now, but she should be back soon.
Be friends, okay?

Vivid :: Hello, uh…
Yamato Yura-chan, right?
>H-Hello!
You’ll be sharing a room with Kashima Sonora, a senior.
She’s back home at the moment, but she’ll return soon.
You two play nice, okay?

Like the soeur vow…
I wonder if they really do that!

Commie :: I guess that’s Kashima Sonora…
I hope she’s nice.
I wonder if there’ll be anything like a Sœur oath.

Vivid :: So that’s Kashima Sonora-senpai?
I hope she’s nice.

Stella Jogakuin Koutouka C3-bu E05

Anime-Koi :: Because of various reasons, we’re facing a grave shortage of airsofters.
In order to secure freshmen with great potential,
we will execute our Capture the Freshmen operation.

Commie :: The C3 club has suffered several sub-par recruitment drives,
and we are woefully under strength.
We direly need to recruit new personnel this year.
Let us think of a strategy for the induction of new recruits!

Vivid :: Due to subpar recruitment pools,
we, the C3 Club, are in danger of not having enough members to play airsoft.
Therefore, in order to secure a promising freshman this year,
we must devise a Capture-a-New-Member Plan.

The gods may forgive these groups but I won’t :: N/A. They all suck.

Anime-Koi :: It’d be nice if some of the new freshmen actually were interested in airsoft.
>They’d have to be real weirdos though.
>>Real freaks, even.

Commie :: Are there really no new students interested in mock battles?
>They’d have to be oddballs.
>>Weirdos, even.

Vivid :: There’s got to be some brave, airsoft-loving freshman out there.
>She’d be quite the weirdo.
>>And quite abnormal.

Vivid :: Th-This isn’t what it looks like!

Anime-Koi :: So she reacts to cake!
So materialistic.
But simple at least.

Commie :: The cake did it.
She’s a calculating one.
She’s easy to understand.

Vivid :: So, she responds to cake.
She must be materialistic.
The sort that’s easy to understand.

The gods may forgive these groups but I won’t :: N/A. They all suck.

Expanded 9.

Per Anime-Koi, “why is every girl a cake slut?”. I don’t know, but I don’t have any complaints.

Audio: [mp3t track="http://www.crymore.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/StellaE09.mp3" play="Start audio" stop="Pause this shit" volslider="y"]

Stella Jogakuin Koutouka C3-bu E09

Anime-Koi :: I caught you!
I noticed earlier that you only reacted to the cake, Yura-chan!
So I thought I’d bait my trap with some cake!

Commie :: Caught you!
I didn’t fail to notice that you only responded to cake.
So I left it out as bait!
That was my plan to lure you in!

Vivid :: Gotcha!
Wh-What?
I noticed earlier that you only responded to cake!
So I
came with a plan
to lure you in by using cake!

The gods may forgive these groups but I won’t :: N/A. They all suck.

Rules.

Audio: [mp3t track="http://www.crymore.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/StellaE10.mp3" play="Start audio" stop="Pause this shit" volslider="y"]

Stella Jogakuin Koutouka C3-bu E10

Anime-Koi :: Let me explain it one more time.
If you get hit by a bullet, yell “hit” and leave the field.
It doesn’t matter if it’s your own bullet or a ricochet, any hit counts the same.
You mustn’t remove your goggles until you’re back in the safe zone.

Commie :: I’ll explain the rules again.
When you get hit by a bullet, you have to say “hit” out loud, and leave the field.
Even your own bullets and ricochets count as hits.
Make sure not to take off your goggles until you’ve reached the safe zone.

Vivid :: I’ll explain it once more.
If you get shot, yell out that you’re hit, and exit the field.
It doesn’t matter if you shoot yourself. That still counts.
Also, make sure you keep your googles on
until you reach the safety zone.

The gods may forgive these groups but I won’t :: N/A. They all suck.

Commie :: I wanted to make high school the time of my life!
But at this rate the time of my life’ll be postponed until judgment day!

It wasn’t a true sweep, but Anime-Koi hit most of the marks for me. Each of the groups had some really clever lines, which made me eager to post the Party. Too bad they each fucked up a good amount too.

FWIW, I watched the episode with Commie’s version.

Also, whoever did this deserves a facepalm.

    Seriously?

    Reply
    • “Now she’s fast” is a different line by a different speaker. Not that the previous line isn’t stupid, but that’s literally what she says. I guess Yura, being gun-illiterate and all, doesn’t get that “dropping her M60” means “dropping her heavy machine gun that was slowing her down”.

    Reply
  25. I went for the most accurate translation instead of the most similar english equivalent that so many other subbers tend to do, so Anime-Koi wins this battle.

    Reply
      • No, because I want a direct translation of the words, both for learning and understanding. I’m already fluent in english, so I don’t need to learn the english ‘equivalents’.
Let’s take the word ‘Hentai’ for instance, the english equivalent seems to be “freaks”, but the direct translation would be closer to “abnormal”.

It’s not a paradox, you just jumped to conclusions .

        Reply
          • You didn’t understand it then, and judging by your latest reply, you still don’t.

Think of it as game translations instead. Localization. Normally games from China and Korea has chinese and korean lore, that is passed down through generations thanks to stories.
Now if you imagine that game being released in NA, for instance, what would happen? You wouldn’t understand anything about what was going on, and the monsters, events and places in the world would have no background story.

How they solve this is by changing it to the “American” equivalent. Most people are familiar with American stories and monsters. They’re not the same, but they might have the same meaning behind them.

If you still don’t get what I mean, I’m sorry. I’m only good at understanding things, not explaining them.

            Reply
            • Well, by the definitions I go by, “English equivalent” is the same thing as “direct translation”. Yes, an “English equivalent” is the equivalent of “direct translation” and “direct translation” is a direct definition for “English equivalent”.

No point in self-proclaiming yourself to be “incredibly intelligent”. I find it quite “incredible”, if you know what I mean.

              Reply
            • You translate meaning, not words. If you think that’s not how it should be, then trust me when I say that you aren’t actually learning the language (or, at the very least, are learning it to a very limited capacity).

As far as what you’re talking about with localization, most companies seem to ignore lore now. Most have realized that for something like that, there’s no point (after all, the people who actually played Okami seemed to like it, lol). Sure, you get localizations that take more liberties, like Ni no Kuni, but those are mostly cosmetic.

Only time I see things completely reworked is for comedy series like Keroro Gunsou and Shin-chan, but it makes sense for those. How can you expect the general audience to find references funny when they aren’t even part of the culture? That’s the point of the reference, that you know what it’s referring to.
