Visual Review

Karaoke.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_00.51_[2013.07.12_15.05.10] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_01.01_[2013.07.12_15.05.27]

Opening. Jesus Christ, it’s perfect. It’s fucking perfect.

Rating: Guess.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_23.36_[2013.07.12_16.00.09] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_23.45_[2013.07.12_16.00.25]

Ending. Not very much you can do when the credits themselves suck. But the effect UTW put on the karaoke (which matches the effect at the very end of the episode) and the 8-bit font brings the karaoke above “okay” territory. Good stuff.

Rating: Good.

Typesetting.

Do note that these signs were all done by their backup typesetter.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_00.00_[2013.07.12_15.03.20] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_00.02_[2013.07.12_15.03.31]

I have no idea what purpose these signs serve, but I am glad they were typeset.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_00.26_[2013.07.12_19.47.54]

In case you wanted to know who subbed it.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_01.54_[2013.07.12_15.06.26]

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_02.11_[2013.07.12_15.07.02]

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_02.18_[2013.07.12_15.07.15]

Though it would have been nice to have these signs typeset, it wasn’t particularly necessary as the note was read aloud.

As for capitalizing “Night Time”, that’s an acceptably stylistic decision, and in my opinion the right one to make. Video games often have set sequences that are of dire importance to the plot and thus deserve proper noun status.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_05.18_[2013.07.12_15.18.30] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_05.19_[2013.07.12_15.18.49] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_05.19_[2013.07.12_15.18.59] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_05.20_[2013.07.12_15.19.14] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_05.23_[2013.07.12_15.19.31] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_13.06_[2013.07.12_15.38.11] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_17.26_[2013.07.12_15.47.08] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_18.36_[2013.07.12_15.48.42] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_17.36_[2013.07.12_15.47.31]

It should be mentioned that sometimes the lines being read off didn’t match what UTW typeset the lines as.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_06.30_[2013.07.12_15.21.49] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_07.30_[2013.07.12_15.27.48] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_19.30_[2013.07.12_15.51.12] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_19.32_[2013.07.12_15.51.17] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_19.41_[2013.07.12_15.51.38] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_21.09_[2013.07.12_15.53.38]

The one time these door signs weren’t typeset appears to have been a mistake as they were typeset in every other scene. Dedication.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_07.11_[2013.07.12_15.26.09] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_07.10_[2013.07.12_15.26.30] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_19.03_[2013.07.12_15.50.20]

Subbed/unsubbed for comparison. I thought the typesetting was what was in the original Japanese release at first. Excellent integration.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_07.57_[2013.07.12_15.28.34] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_07.57_[2013.07.12_15.28.43]

UTW only typeset her name. Not that I was expecting much else to be done with this scene.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_13.45_[2013.07.12_15.39.02] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_13.46_[2013.07.12_15.39.08] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_13.53_[2013.07.12_15.39.20] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_13.54_[2013.07.12_15.39.25]

Good shit. Love how in the first two you can see just the little bit of typesetting that wasn’t covered by the circle.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_18.32_[2013.07.12_15.48.32]

I had to check that these items weren’t subbed this way in the original release. Nope — just UTW doing a pro as fuck job with their typesets.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_19.36_[2013.07.12_15.51.25] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_19.55_[2013.07.12_15.51.56] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_19.58_[2013.07.12_15.52.03] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_20.44_[2013.07.12_15.52.55] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_22.51_[2013.07.12_15.59.05]

And there’s the rest. Impressed? I was.

Script Review

Main Script.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_02.34_[2013.07.12_15.12.17] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_02.35_[2013.07.12_15.12.22]

UTW somehow confused the idioms “wrap your brains around” and “rack your brains“. The mash-up unfortunately doesn’t work.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_02.47_[2013.07.12_15.14.33]

And? You could make the guy seem less retarded, you know.

“So Monobear wants us to use these as weapons…”

It’s almost the same thing, but it’s less painful to read.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_06.54_[2013.07.12_15.22.28]

There’s a very key difference between acting as emotional support and being it. Were we to take UTW’s line at face value here, the implication would be that Naegi just wants to appear nice. But this dude’s a lovesick white knight through and through, so that’s not likely at all.

The vast majority of the issues in this release were subtle inaccuracies like this.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_04.36_[2013.07.12_15.17.15]

Well, possibly, but in every scene like this, it’s the door handle that makes the racket. Also, “clatter” wouldn’t really be a good term to use.

“All of a sudden, my room’s door handle started to rattle.” // “Out of nowhere, my room’s door handle started to rattle.”

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_05.43_[2013.07.12_15.20.19]

This should actually be “but, uh…”

Does it matter? No. Am I still gonna bitch about it? Already did.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_06.09_[2013.07.12_15.21.13]

This should be “well fitted” in the postpositive (here, I get to pretend I know what means).

I don’t really like the sentiment behind the current line though. I’d go with, “The bathroom’s door doesn’t work quite right.” No, it’s not literally the same, but it’s the same general idea while also being written in common English.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_12.21_[2013.07.12_15.37.13]

It would be “well aware”. You only throw in the hyphen when you’re using the term as an adjective. For example, “That well-aware man is well aware of his surroundings.”

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_13.37_[2013.07.12_21.55.19]

murderer*

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_13.50_[2013.07.12_19.32.48]

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_14.06_[2013.07.12_15.39.48]

Well, Monobear never said “punish”. He said “punished”. So this ain’t exactly right.

What’s the difference, you ask? It’s a matter of how English-speaking humans speak English. Unless you have the attention span of a dead banana, you’re always gonna repeat the right word when quoting someone.

[UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_14.10_[2013.07.12_15.41.48] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_14.13_[2013.07.12_15.41.41] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_14.15_[2013.07.12_15.41.57] [UTW]_Danganronpa_The_Animation_-_02_[h264-720p][B1A2027B].mkv_snapshot_14.17_[2013.07.12_15.42.03]

Monokuma’s current response doesn’t fit. Again, like most of the errors in this release, it’s subtle, but native English speakers will pick up on it right-quick. (I presume the TL is ESL.)

Exactly what it means. -> Exactly what I said.

There were some dips in quality with sections of the script, but its overall quality combined with brilliant visuals makes this a very high-quality release. Well done, UTW.

  1. UTW is very good fansub because they HAVE education and are not random teenagers(16years old trololol) who want to make fansub just to make something in their life because they are bored by school.

    I’M RIGHT, I KNOW.
UTW go to medical school at last.
