Translation Review: [COOL] Tamayura ~More Aggressive~ – 01

This post was written by kokujin-kun. He is not Dark_Sage.

I already thought this was a dead group, they didn’t need to announce the drop today.

OP. They went pretty literal, for example instead of something involving “candid shot” they went with what you see here.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_23.43_[2013.08.02_15.48.40]

ED. In a similar fashion, they had trouble streamlining the lyrics, which will give you unnecessary two-liners.

Main Script.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_01.18_[2013.08.02_13.30.13]

They decided not to translate Fuu’s node verbal tic, or at least not anywhere I noticed (except for the titles).

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_03.08_[2013.08.02_13.33.34]

One of the few quirky lines in this script (mita yo! chou kawaikatta!)

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_06.41_[2013.08.02_13.38.23]

Their attempt at translating the portmanteau teretsun. Me no likey too much.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_07.10_[2013.08.02_13.40.51]

So they are saying howahowa which is just another way of saying fuwafuwa of which one of the definitions is indeed “fluffy.” However, that term also means “flighty” and I am convinced that this is the definition that they are looking for.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_09.46_[2013.08.02_15.10.06]

Faito, scriptwriters.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_12.32_[2013.08.02_15.23.23]

Double C-minus.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_13.03_[2013.08.02_15.24.07]

Since ohayo is apparently the informal way of saying “good morning,” this is necessitated.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_13.43_[2013.08.02_15.25.48]

She actually says komasshakure, not “Komachi”. Same difference, I guess.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_16.51_[2013.08.02_15.30.35]

Ganbatte, scriptwriters.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_20.59_[2013.08.02_15.36.20][cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_21.02_[2013.08.02_15.36.27][cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_21.10_[2013.08.02_15.36.38][cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_21.15_[2013.08.02_15.36.47]

Yep, those are four lines in a row: four lines containing ouen, and four lines containing “support.” Not sure if I should applaud them for preserving how fucking lame the original Japanese dialogue is or kick their ass for not varying up their lines a little.

…Nah, I’ll opt for the latter.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_22.28_[2013.08.02_15.39.21]

She’s talking to the camera, so that means she wants to get along with the camera. Awesome.

Other Observations

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_22.40_[2013.08.02_15.42.30]

There are three things wrong with this picture. First, they decided once again to translate “ganbaru” as “working hard,” which is lame to say the least. Second,  the sign at the top comes in too late. Third, they failed at layering the sign at the bottom.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_07.57_[2013.08.02_15.07.55]

“Alright” is not all right.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_13.18_[2013.08.02_15.25.00]

One: Capitalize the first letter of each part you’re stuttering

Two: When stuttering “Wh” or “Th” words, retain both letters in the stutters since they represent a single sound.

[cool]_tamayura__more_aggressive__-_01_[720p][faab4b26].mkv_snapshot_14.15_[2013.08.02_15.27.26]

Timing was pretty hit-or-miss. This was one of the biggest bleeds in the release.

Final Grade: B

Like I said before, their mediocre script did a good job of capturing how mediocre this story was. However, there are ways of making even mediocre scripts not sound like straight Japanese translations, something which this group ultimately failed at.

  1. The “h” in “what” is silent so you don’t know if “wh” makes a “w” sound or “hat” makes an “at” sound, right?

    • This isn’t even kindergarten stuff. “Wh” represents a certain sound, so there is really no reason to split it up. Maybe it’s less problematic with “Wh”, but with “Th” people might think the character is actually sounding out the letter “T” if it’s stuttered like that.

Four: They used “made” two times in a single line.
