Much like Watashi’s KlK, Anime-Koi’s Coppelion has been delayed per request. So you’ll see those reviews sometime later. Guess that means it’s onto the latest poll results for now.

Visual Review

Karaoke.

This sways
This sways
This moves left to right
This moves left to right
And this rides the fucking elevator. It rides the fucking elevator.
And this rides the fucking escalator. Yes, really.

Opening. I doubt I will see a more faggy, navel-gazing, ostentatious display of retardation this season. This karaoke is a prime example of why people who hate karaoke will never see one iota of value in it.

And it’s beautiful.

Rating: Great.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_22.20_[2013.10.22_17.36.52] [Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_23.01_[2013.10.22_17.36.24]

Ending. The font and colors match quite well. The only complaint I have is that they didn’t really handle the super-fast-talking-bit at all. Missed opportunity there, but nice otherwise.

Rating: Good.

Typesetting.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_02.05_[2013.10.22_17.44.05] [Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_04.07_[2013.10.22_17.46.11] [Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_09.07_[2013.10.22_18.13.08] [Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_19.35_[2013.10.22_18.26.32] So I [Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_23.38_[2013.10.22_17.35.56]

5 signs, 3.5 of which were typeset. So I guess we’ll give it a “banana” out of 5 for the score.

Script Review

Main Script.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_07.10_[2013.10.22_19.16.43]

This would be a snack, not a dessert.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_09.29_[2013.10.22_18.13.45]

just <=> doesn’t

Swap the order and this will right read.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_12.59_[2013.10.22_18.18.11]

Way to match Japan. (Note that the “typeset” was done by the animators.)

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_19.57_[2013.10.22_18.27.11]

[mp3t track="http://www.crymore.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/vivid_coppelion.mp3" play="Start audio" stop="Pause this shit" volslider="y"]

Unreadable in the time allotted.

The Good

As I mentioned in my EveTaku review, this script is fucking easy mode, so I don’t have any great examples of scriptwriting to share. But since this is an A-tier release I feel obligated to give you guys something else to work with, so let’s talk about the edits Vivid made to the original script.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_02.25_[2013.10.22_19.37.53]

Original: Why are you trying so hard to hide him?

The original requires fixing because the hospitalized guy isn’t actually hiding the deliveryman so much as he is hiding the deliveryman’s identity. There’s a clear difference and I’m glad Vivid was able to recognize it.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_02.47_[2013.10.22_19.39.01]

Original: Getting nowhere as expected, huh?

Anytime I see an “as expected” in a release it triggers a death flag. That line’s death flag, that is.

I don’t exactly know how to describe why the Viz line is wrong to non-native speakers, so you guys will just have to accept that “Getting nowhere as expected, huh?” is not something you’d hear uttered by any native English speaker.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_04.21_[2013.10.22_19.41.02]

Original: She’s been staring out the window all this time.

Vivid adds specificity that results in a much nicer flowing line.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_05.17_[2013.10.22_19.42.15]

Original: W-Why isn’t she wearing a hazmat suit?!

Wait, Viz had the better line here. Never mind, forget you ever saw anything.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_06.39_[2013.10.22_19.44.22]

Original: The advances in science is truly horrifying…

I know it’s October and Halloween’s just around the corner, but please, Viz.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_07.22_[2013.10.22_19.45.47]

Original: It doesn’t have any taste!

For Viz’s line to be right, the “taste” would need to be replaced with “flavor”.

[Vivid] Coppelion - 03 [42A3373E].mkv_snapshot_09.34_[2013.10.22_19.56.38]

Original: Something that is spewing the pollution…

Spewing is right. All right, I’m done. You get the gist; editing provides value. And when groups actually edit official scripts, you don’t have to deal with any of the bullshit you saw here. So you can imagine how displeased I am when groups simply drop out the honorifics and call it a day.

Clearly, that’s not good enough, and it’s especially doing a disservice to the many people who actually try to learn English via subtitles as a means of edutainment. Well, I guess it’d just be the “edu” in the case of Coppelion since the show sucks.

So kudos to Vivid for putting more than a minute’s worth of effort into the show. It definitely isn’t unrecognized.

  1. Something about that Kawabata Miku typeset seems off, though it’s serviceable enough. The whole thing seems angled a bit wrong, and then the individual letters don’t seem to match the rotation of the original characters on the door name plate. The placement isn’t too convincing either. I’m definitely no TS though.

    > This kind of contamination just doesn’t come out of nowhere.

Is there really a problem with just/doesn’t order? Both ways are pretty common. The grouping “this just doesn’t come” gets millions of hits, if you want to go that route.

    • Yes, it actually does matter, and when we’re talking A-tier I’ll bring it up. It ruins the cadence of the line. I don’t think I’m nearly adequately equipped to describe the exact benefits to anyone who doesn’t speak the language natively, but I can probably associate it with a pattern of “short-syllable words”, “long-syllable words”, “short-syllable words”, “long-syllable words” being preferable to one that goes “short-syllable words”, “long-syllable words”, “short-syllable words”, “long-syllable words”, “short-syllable words”, “long-syllable words”. But that’s just a guess as to my brain’s reasoning. All in all, it doesn’t sound right to me, and when things don’t sound right, I generally trust my instincts.

I wouldn’t have put this specific critique in there if I thought it was actually arguable.

    • One does not simply put the adverb before “does not/doesn’t” and have it read/sound as nicely.

I feel kind of bad about that, but it shows what I mean. It’s just better. “Just doesn’t” sounds more insistent/childish/whiny. “I just CAN’T eat you shitty food!” “Doesn’t just” is more refuting the simplicity of the concept. It’s not a simple matter to walk into epic maymays. This contamination is not a trivial matter, and where it came from is IMPORTANT, damn it.

Basically, the constructions give different senses. “Just doesn’t” works, but it doesn’t fit as well.

      • Okay, if the context is more “let’s find where it came from” (hence the map?) and not “omgwtf it came out of nowhere,” then I can get on board with “just” being afterwards.

I don’t really know what the show is about or who is talking there, so that was probably an issue.
