You may be wondering why I would review this show’s dub instead of the dub from the highly acclaimed mediocre action-comedy series Space Dandy.

This review probably won’t give you the answer you’re looking for.

Note: I will be judging this dub by the same standards I judge fansub scripts.

Oh, and you can also watch this shit on their Youtube channel, assuming you’re capable of enjoying shows ironically.

But to be fair, they did go out of their way to make sure the English release looked good too.
Dub: S

Overall rating: S

This is, I believe, the only S-rank I have ever given out. And yes, this score is canon.

Like I said in the beginning, I’m judging this release by the same standards that I judge fansub scripts. That is, do the characters sound like actual humans who are natively speaking the language? In this case, yes. The main script delivers on exactly that (as does almost every other English dub out there).

Now, by dub standards was it a good release, or was I just cherry picking minor derps here?

    • Given that the only dubs I have time to watch these days are the Ocean dubs of Bakugan in the morning, I can’t say I have much of an opinion on what Sentai’s been doing.

But honestly, for shows like Bakugan and Buddyfight, it’s better that they’re bad. I don’t think I could sit through them if people were pouring their hearts and souls into that shit; it’d be too depressing.

  1. Can’t say I’m too familiar with Ocean’s work in anime dubbing, but I remember that they did the dub for Mega Man X: Command Mission and it was pretty good. Then again, maybe it only seemed good in comparison to X4. It’s been a while.

    • Last I checked (and I really do not keep up on the news), they have three studios: one for their high-tier work, another for moderate-paying gigs, and another that’s basically the cheap option. Shows like Buddyfight get the latter studio. Mega Man probably did too, but it’s possible they did a good job. I don’t much keep up-to-date on which dubs are good or bad, since ultimately I don’t really care. I’m too busy with Crymore to watch a lot of dubs for entertainment anymore.

And since I gathered this info, I’m just gonna blow it all here: They haven’t been doing too hot recently. Ocean made their name off of being a cheap dubbing studio back when the Canadian dollar was a lot cheaper than the US dollar, and as a way to break into the Canadian TV market. But YTV (which is I think sorta like Cartoon Network) is not super-sold on anime anymore, so that combined with the weakened American dollar made the Ocean Group a lot less attractive to studios looking for a dub. The US domestic market hasn’t been so great either, especially for Ocean, since Funi and Sentai do dubs in-house, and they’re currently the top players. So any VA looking to do this shit super seriously for a living would have already moved down to the US for gigs. They also have a weakened reputation from years of being the cheap dub studio, working on stuff like DBZ, which was later redubbed by Funi.

So yeah, not the best time for Ocean right now.
