Translation

Karaoke.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_01.31_[2014.04.29_18.48.47]

OP. First of all, this ranks as one of the most retarded kara effects I’ve ever seen. Good luck trying to read any of the romaji lyrics without pausing.

Anyhoo, they did pretty good considering they did this by ear. You’ll only get some bugs like areba being rendered as arete here.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_22.59_[2014.04.29_19.53.07]

ED. Similarly mimicopied. Speaking of “mimi,” if they translated what was in the romaji lyrics here without thinking, you’d get “The forbidden ear.”

Main Script.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_03.10_[2014.04.29_18.52.18]

They decided to render his Japanese translation as an English translation for some reason.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_01.17_[2014.04.29_18.47.38]

“Study time” should actually be “hands-on training” (geddit?)

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_03.21_[2014.04.29_18.52.48]

Yeah, except the way they rendered his dialogue doesn’t make it seem like he did.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_03.39_[2014.04.29_18.54.18]

Wow, someone who can pluralize.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_03.45_[2014.04.29_18.54.45]

“Green Shop Tamo Ag.”

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_04.19_[2014.04.29_18.57.19]

Tsukareru now means “bored.” Oh-kay.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_05.32_[2014.04.29_18.59.47]

Honestly, there are perfectly valid translations for jidori. You don’t have to leave it untranslated.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_06.11_[2014.04.29_19.12.58]

They decide to leave Torpedo Tits tongue-tied say-it-five-times-fast nyaas alone in this scene.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_06.27_[2014.04.29_19.13.48]

Agriculture school.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_07.20_[2014.04.29_19.15.39]

How the hell does gubutsu (“fool”) mean “snob”?

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_07.35_[2014.04.29_19.16.18]

I already explained how whoever thinks this is a valid translation of this line should kill himself. Thankfully they changed it to “eggs made with birth control” in the batch.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_07.43_[2014.04.29_19.16.34]

Boob Bomb? What in the actual fuck?

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_07.52_[2014.04.29_19.17.08]

Once again, akadama may refer to the reddish eggs that hens lay, or it may refer to droplets of blood they say appears in semen if you ejaculate too much.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_09.35_[2014.04.29_19.21.28]

Not that it really matters, but he says “morusua”.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_10.02_[2014.04.29_19.22.44]

That’s a valid a translation for the ousama geemu as I’ve ever seen.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_10.29_[2014.04.29_19.23.31][ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_10.31_[2014.04.29_19.23.37]

A good example of translating two lines separately and not making sure they flow together.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_11.04_[2014.04.29_19.25.04][ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_11.07_[2014.04.29_19.25.13]

The second line is fine, but imagine Raito finally getting the notebook back from the fake Kira. Would he say, “I got this?”

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_13.36_[2014.04.29_19.32.33]

Talking –> Thinking. He was caught staring at her.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_16.52_[2014.04.29_19.36.53]

Misheard boku ga (“I am”) as bokura (“we”). Kounibyou is supposed to be “self-absorbed teenagers.”

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_17.11_[2014.04.29_19.40.34]

“I’ll be taking care of these panties, or rather this feud.”

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_20.07_[2014.04.29_19.46.26]

Forgot the “Calm down, Kousaku” part.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_21.27_[2014.04.29_19.48.49]

When they say the verb kaburu, it means the panties should be over their hearts like they do over their heads.

Other Observations

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_03.29_[2014.04.29_18.53.39]

Why can’t the words fit inside the assigned spaces? Oh right, because of this shit.

And I’ll bet they spent a fuckton of time on those signs too. Such a waste.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_05.17_[2014.04.29_18.58.59][ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_05.21_[2014.04.29_18.59.07]

One of the many reasons why I’m pretty sure an American wasn’t editing this.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_05.47_[2014.05.02_17.24.49]

They couldn’t move the offending typesetting off to the side somewhere, so they elected to put the dialogue subs right in the middle of the screen. Mazel tov.

[ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_12.32_[2014.04.29_19.31.14][ChihiroDesuYo] Nourin - 02 (1280x720 10bit AAC) [EA8D19D7].mkv_snapshot_20.24_[2014.04.29_19.46.55]

A bunch of timing issues abound in this release.

Final Grade: B-

This is certainly better than the effort by FUNi, but they still had a handful of errors. Also, too, the fact that they both had the “eggs with condoms on” line makes me think that this translation is not as original as one might think.

Update your CCCP and/or switch to LAV Splitter. Haali is outdated and isn’t being supported by its author anymore, so there’s no reason to be using it anymore.

    Reply
    • Actually, ignore that. I think they just forgot the font entirely.

But yeah, MIME type should no longer matter. It’s just Haali that throws a bitchfit and refuses to load anything that isn’t muxed as a truetype.

      • I dont think we forgot the font. It rendered for other people correctly. I’m sure we would have heard complaints if everyone had seen it that way. I was also under the impression that updated versions of all the major renderers supported opentype MIME types and only the .ttc and .otc fonts were problematic now.

        >makes me think that this translation is not as original as one might think.

The TL was australia and would wake up at 3am the next day by the TS’ time to TL. So we ripped funi signs to work with until he could get on to TLC them. So we already had that wording before he even got on.

        >They decided to render his Japanese translation as an English translation for some reason.
If I remember correctly, we decided to because for some reason he sounded out “wakkadonna” to her like she is retarded. Which would make more sense if he was explaining an English word to her not a Japanese one.

        >One of the many reasons why I’m pretty sure an American wasn’t editing this.
Canadian. Don’t children’s stories often end in “happily ever after”? That was the intended effect.

        puddi:
        >not going for all according to keikaku
TL actually put that in… it got QCd out cause no one else understood the reference. Was also fixed in batch.

            • Might depend on your system locale too. Mine is set to Japanese for :reasons: and I wouldn’t be surprised if kokujin’s was the same.

Basically Japanese fonts are Satan and you should try to avoid using them whenever humanly possible.

              Reply
              • that’s definitely it. guess now we know. however, i’d guess that the majority (no one willing to take the time to complain at least) of people who watched it are using japanese locale or else they wouldn’t be using the subtitles. lol

                Reply
                • I am never, ever going to switch my locale for any reason simply because it is too prone to fucking with things. I had a friend who had problems with it once and had to wipe his computer because he couldn’t make it go back and it broke so badly his computer was practically unusable. Then again, this was in Vista, but if I remember right 7 actually has a limit on the number of times you can switch.

So yeah, if you need to change your locale, just use something like Locale Emulator, that’s easier.

                  Reply
            • Yeah, renders OK on my media PC (which is set to English locale) so I’d say locale is to blame. Japanese fonts tend to have two different names based on locale because Windows is a pain in the ass.

If you stop by #irrational-typesetting-wizardry they might be able to better advise you as to how to prevent this from happening again (I think you have to manually edit the font in Fontlab or the likes to change the names – either that, or see if the Japanese name works on both). Or just avoid using Japanese fonts whenever you can because this shit is messy.

          • Until you use the script with libass and then it doesn’t work at all (probably). Postscript names don’t always work correctly with libass.

  2. OP. First of all, this ranks as one of the most retarded kara effects I’ve ever seen… – if you can’t feel the song, then you have no right to judge my kfx. It’s sung fast, so going slow is not right(each line is between 1.50 and ~ 3 seconds). Why don’t ya try singing fast pace song slowly? But then again, you there is big chance for you to not understand it. Not many can which is too bad. (It’s all about the pace and the rhythm. It’s simple, yet it’s not.)

P.S. And I know that no one likes the kfx, but me.

    • If it’s a fast song that necessitates a fast kara effect, choose an effect that doesn’t make the text disappear while you’re trying to read it. If the effect is fitting but not readable, then it doesn’t matter how good it is, it fails its purpose. There are plenty of options for interesting effects that work well for the song that can actually be read.
