They got the “important” signs out of the way. But it didn’t really stack up to Otaku’s effort.

Script Review

Main Script.

[Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_04.45_[2014.09.11_22.16.49]

Was “tryst” too big a word for you?

[Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_08.55_[2014.09.11_19.09.46] [Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_08.57_[2014.09.11_19.09.51] [Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_08.58_[2014.09.11_19.09.56]

It took Otaku’s subs to fully register that she was saying “Hey Captain Chromosome, let’s continue this conversation at the beach.” There’s no frame of reference for “instead” in Kaylith’s release.

[Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_11.15_[2014.09.11_22.56.26]

Otaku: And I don’t know why, but everyone pretty much idolizes him.

Pretty big difference in translations there. I’m inclined to go with Otaku on this one, seeing as even with all the stupid idol shit in Japan, I don’t think there have been any secret idols where the idol in question has no idea they’ve reached idol status. This isn’t the Truman Show, Kaylith.

“He looks really graceful when he runs!” is the only thing that would allow her to respond like she does in that second line. Learn to script write.

*I feel like I begin to understand

[Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_14.04_[2014.09.12_21.45.38]

You mean “coach”. This is a swimming club.

[Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_16.28_[2014.09.11_22.58.40] [Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_16.31_[2014.09.11_22.58.46] [Kaylith] Glasslip - 07 [720p][96AF4E75].mkv_snapshot_16.34_[2014.09.11_22.58.53]

That last line made me actually pause the damn show to look up who that fucking chick is, because Kaylith seemed to be implying she wasn’t Kakeru’s mother.

She is.
She is.

While I heavily blame the show for its inability to explain any goddamn thing, Kaylith’s sloppy writing doesn’t help.

his mother would -> a mother would usually

I mean, chrissake, I’m not even a harsh reviewer. All the stuff I point out in these posts is something anyone with a native understanding of the language would pick up on if they gave it a second of thought. Stop sucking.

“Why would people get boring shit like water or tea from vending machines when they could have some pop like Halpis Water instead?” is what we’re supposed to take away from this, but your translation doesn’t get that across.

Who among your audience is going to know that Halpis Water is a reference to Calpis Water, which is like uncarbonated pop or something and not just a brand of water like Aquafina? Shit, I had to look it up, cuz my first impression was that Japan has branded watering fountains near vending machines or something.

At the very least, drop the “Water” from “Halpis Water” so you’re not confusing your audience. Yes, it’s less “accurate”, but so is not running a dictionary translation on every word while leaving the Japanese grammar intact. And yes, it’s your responsibility to make sure your viewers understand what’s going on.

Fucking hell.

I can’t say your suggestion for this sounds any better than the original line. Not that the original was all that good, but the suggestion wasn’t exactly fluid either.

I can somewhat understand your comment on this, but I could take the line as it is and my first interpretation would be what Kaylith intended. Again, not that the line was brilliant by any means, but I have trouble believing many people would be confused by it.

    • Indeed the second line is hardly confusing, unless one doesn’t pay attention to anything while watching it (which, for this show, wouldn’t really be surprising). It was pretty clear for me.

That sounds very awkward, what they have is better.

And the mother part is passable, I do agree with you but there’s no big difference if they are only talking to each and he’s obviously commenting on something she said.

    • “When I’m with him, I feel like I begin to understand” vs. “When I’m with him, I feel like I’m beginning to understand” and you pick the Kaylith version? ESL status cemented.

      Reply
      • I won’t even pretend I know what I’m talking about, I’m just going off what sounds better (that’s why I said it sounded awkward and not wrong), neither of them sound that good when looking at them a second time though, I’d prefer “When I’m with him, I feel like I’m starting to understand”.

        Reply
        • Yeah, “begin” sounds wrong to me too because it’s describing state-of-being. It’s like the line “When I hear your voice, I feel like I’m floating”. I don’t think anyone would say “I feel like I float” there.

  3. Wait, Calpis Water ISN’T a common thing in America?

I’m fairly certain most people here in Australia know what it is. It’s in Asian groceries and vending machines and shit. It’s also disgusting.

    Reply
      • Well, have you heard of C.C. Lemon or Qoo? I’m pretty sure they’re in the same vein of products.

Man, now I have no idea what other countries have as Asian drinks. I always kind of assumed this stuff was universal.

        Reply
        • The fuck is that shit? I think the only Asian drinks you’ll find a relatively large number of people know about in America will be ramune and bubble tea (obviously not sold at grocers). If you wanna consider Red Bull as an Asian drink, that’s super popular though.

I’m sure there are special grocers that stock that stuff, but in terms of what I’ve seen in my shopping experiences across the country, we don’t have too many Asian beverages for sale.

          Reply
      • How about Calpico at least? If I remember correctly, Calpis was rebranded as Calpico in America because of possible confusion. (Calpis = Cow piss)

        Reply
        • Still never heard of it. When I head to the grocery store again I can take some pics of the Asian aisle if you want. Been to quite a few places around the country and never really encountered anything substantial in the Asian sections.

          Reply
          • Considering that the only stores my family visits for groceries nowadays are either Asian supermarkets (e.g. 99 Ranch, Marina Food) or Costco, I’ve never actually frequented a “normal” grocery store to see what the Asian aisle actually has.

So, yeah, I’d like to see a few pics of the Asian aisle in your preferred grocery store.

      • Australian too. You’re living under a rock. If you go to most Japanese karaoke bars, they’ll probably have it. They can be a bit hard to find in asian groceries though. Depends on the grocer of course.

        Reply
    • It’s really not very common at all. Certainly not so that “everyone” would know what it is. Your uncle Bazza and cousins Davo and Jezza in the habit of popping into Asian supermarkets and Japanese karaoke bars, are they? Mine aren’t.
And yeah, Calpis is ace. Blue flavour master race.
