Even if you’re not entirely impressed by the season (and keep in mind a “Good” rating in this post is only gonna be a 7-8/10), keep in mind that Persona 5 will be here by the end of the year. Japan’s redemption is nigh!

The Series

Charlotte

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: P.A. Works

P.A. Works hasn’t made a decent series since Hanasaku Iroha, but maybe Angel Beats Lite will bring them back from the brink. After all, this is a Key show. And Key can do no wrong! Well, except when it’s Little Busters. Or Air. Or Planetarian (I assume, cuz I ain’t wasting time on a 3-hour VN even if I have it).

But you thought it was super sad when the foxgirl died in Kanon 10 years ago, so just fucking believe this will be good. At least you’re guaranteed to be shedding tears by the end of it.

Put your faith in a company that can't even spell its shows right.

Venus Project -Climax-

Venus Project -Climax-

Manga: N/A

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Nomad

They’re only throwing six episodes at this series, and even the visuals look budget, so I’m not sure what we’re gonna be in for other than a godawful fucking time. Look, I don’t care how pointy the girls’ boobs are, the smoothness of their hips, or the– wait, how low are those panties again?

Sike! I’m not the kinda guy who’d be taken in by fapbait. Taste this discerning didn’t come from a lack of sagacity. My recommendation to avoid this show stands.

Rokka no Yuusha

Rokka no Yuusha

Manga: N/A

Light Novel: https://rokkathetranslation.wordpress.com/volume-1/

Animation Production: Passione

Six warriors have to defeat an unspeakable evil, but seven gather. And one of them rocks a mean underboob. This is the show I’ve been waiting my whole life for.

Now, I know what you’re going to say. “Dark_Sage, is it not butts that are a man’s romance?” And while I must acknowledge that is true, the underboob is a justice of its own design. And combined with an eyepatched kuudere sniper…

Just try and tell me you aren’t interested. Nobody’s taste is that bad. I’ll be watching this one intently, and I recommend you do the same.

God Eater

Shingeki_no_God_Burst

Manga: http://bato.to/read/_/112801/god-eater-the-summer-wars_v1_ch1_by_village-idiot/2

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Nomad

Ufotable does Attack on Titan? Hells yes I’m in. Or, I would be, if I wasn’t already familiar with the characters. Look, ufotable couldn’t even make Fate/Stay Night good, so I don’t have any expectations that they can somehow turn a cast of somewhat-personified tropes into something capable of entertaining me for more than a few minutes.

And just because drinking Alisa’s bath water would be more motivating than an Adderal tonic–

Alisaplz

And just because a certain character provides the cure for whiskey dick, that doesn’t mean this show’s gonna be superb. I mean, I’ll watch anything with money put into it, but for a show like this expectations must be tempered. I’d ask you to remember Owari no Seraph when dealing with God Eater, but that show’s created more alcoholics than Russia, so I’ll just recommend blanket caution.

Akagami no Shirayukihime

Akagami no Shirayukihime

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: BONES

It’s shoujo, so it’s an automatic 8/10 for me if I don’t get bored enough to drop it after 5 eps (hi, Ore Monogatari). Having gone through the manga, I guess I’d describe it as Soredemo Sekai, but if the main characters weren’t irredeemable cunts. So yeah, I fucking love it.

Now, I gotta state off the bat that it’s about as unambitious as a fansubber, but with this being thrown into the BONES pile, I am intrigued. Fingers crossed for vanilla with some bite to it.

Million Doll

Dolls' Millions

Manga: http://bato.to/read/_/310484/million-doll_ch1_by_shini-tan-scans

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Asahi Production

Though I despise idol/wota culture (really, I despise celebrity culture in general), Million Doll is closer to something like Wake Up Girls rather than the sugared poison of a Love Live. I’m probably just projecting, but goddamn, not only is every character completely broken, but they’re all trapped in prisons of society’s — and their own — creation.

For a central plot point in what appears to be a stupid shoujo, the conflict between the wota blogger and the concert-going wota is finger-nommingly hype. How fucking selfishly manipulative will these “fans” get?

Million Doll
Which pawns will win?

Okay, now I’m sure I’m projecting. This isn’t fucking deep drama; anything interesting about the series has to be specifically read into. But that it can be read that way is the best part about the series.

With the proper interpretation (read: mine), I would be exceptionally interested in the anime, but I get the feeling it’s going to be more whitewashy than skin bleaching cream. As such, don’t expect anything more than your standard cutesy idol shit. Which is a shame.

Jitsu wa Watashi wa

Jitsu wa Watashi wa

Manga: http://bato.to/read/_/329807/jitsu-wa-watashi-wa_v1_ch1_by_futari-wa-pretty-anon

Light Novel: N/A

Animation Production: Asahi Production

A high school comedy featuring a guy who can’t lie and a Kansai-go-lucky vampire (plus a bunch of other whacky characters). Sure, the manga’s cute, and the anime likely will be too, but silly high schoolers being silly has been done to death by now. Even if you don’t think you deserve better than this, you totally do.

  1. Rokka no Yuusha is solid AOTS, unless you aren’t me but then who cares about you really.

Can’t wait for the shitfest that God Eater will cause when the budget runs out halfway through (episode 1 is already delay, woops).

  3. I’m hyped for Akagami, personally. BONES won’t let us down, right?

I just hope a group picks it up, because it’s a funimation simulcast.

    • Uchouten Kazoku, AOTS 2013. And TariTari was pretty much the same thing as Hanasaku Iroha, just a bit watered down. I’d then put Nagi no Asukara between the two. Really, they’ve done decently enough. And even Red Data Girl and Glasslip still looked like sex.

      • I found Tari Tari boring.

Also, I tend to find that the fact that how pretty PA Works’ shows are make me more upset if the show turns out to be shit. I feel like they’re trying to mask how terrible the story is and bereft of depth or likeability the characters are with pretty visuals. I think good visuals make me judge a show more harshly because I feel the content should match that quality, which is why I’m often hard on KyoAni shows, as well.

      • Nagi no Asukara had fantastic production design, but it’s by far the most poorly-written anime PA Works has produced. The final half of the show, in which everybody spends all their time screaming their feelings at each other in endless expository rants requiring a level of self-awareness no human being possesses and an estimation of the audience’s intelligence somewhere between “Internet retarded” and “cucumber,” was nearly enough to make me give up on PA Works altogether.

Glasslip’s quite underrated compared with that briny turd. I can’t care about it enough to defend it, but at least it was a show in which we watched uninteresting people do uninteresting stuff, instead of explaining the uninteresting stuff they were doing directly to us. Also it used Osamu Dezaki techniques at emotional highs, which was pretty cool.

But this is all academic. Uchouten Kazuku more than makes up for every subpar effort PA Works has spewed out.
