Recently read a review of the game (here) and it turns out this show does have a plot. Just hard to derive that without knowing what the fuck’s going on already.

Oh, and this show gets slightly better when you realize

Spoiler for
the main character dies in every episode.

Script Review

I took advantage of you while we were dating to open doors for you.

In another example of me taking advantage of you, I also made you pancakes one morning.

I’m such a horrible person, please forgive me.

Expert scriptwriting, Hybrid.

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_03.05_[2013.02.04_08.48.29] [Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_03.13_[2013.02.04_08.48.53]

What’s impossible? (Yes, this is all one “sentence”.)

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_06.13_[2013.02.04_08.52.13]

“So, ‘kick start’ and ‘kick off’ have incredibly similar meanings.”

“Yeah?”

“So why not combine the two into one phrase?”

“Brilliant!”

No, Hybrid. Not brilliant.

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_07.35_[2013.02.04_08.53.47]

Shinano Forest

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_09.04_[2013.02.04_08.55.32]

Who doesn’t need Rush things? No excuse needed, friend.

A bit presumptuous to know exactly what her feelings were. I mean, I know this is anime but it seems like the fault’s with Hybrid on this one.

“It took forever until it finally felt like we were dating.”

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_11.41_[2013.02.04_11.41.41] [Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_11.45_[2013.02.04_11.41.50]

With the way this is phrased, I got the impression the drunkard pushed his father away. But in reality, it was the other way around.

For some reason, I don’t feel that causing your viewers to misunderstand plot points is a good way to sub a show, Hybrid.

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_13.31_[2013.02.04_11.44.50]

Accidental overlap!

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_14.27_[2013.02.04_11.46.13]

immediate response? The fuck does that mean here?

“Your response was surprising.”

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_16.54_[2013.02.04_11.48.54] [Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_17.34_[2013.02.04_11.49.43]

If you can stomach how this looks and reads, you’re probably overweight.

[Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_19.35_[2013.02.04_11.53.53] [Hybrid] Amnesia - 04 [720p][C5063654].mkv_snapshot_19.36_[2013.02.04_11.53.58]

Lucky her her.

Beyond these highlights, there’s a lot wrong on the back end of the script. Needless word repetition in sentences, poor sentence linking (sometimes Hybrid remembers how to use ellipses and sometimes they don’t), and generally dull phrasing help underscore why these subs are not your best option.

Oh well, enough of this shit. Reaction time.

Gonna interject and say that this thinking is exactly why the subs suck. While Hatsuyuki was literal, their subs weren’t intentionally stupid. Okay, back to the reactions.

You actually missed out on quite a bit of the reactions from this episode. But that’s because most of the reactions were just cringeworthily bad, and other comments on the script were mini-shrines to bad English. There was also a subplot of Kaitou making fun of the show/commenting on it, and then someone (Denpa?) commenting that he’s trolling — almost like he didn’t understand what trolling was.

The reason I didn’t include all that awkward is because in these bonus sections, I try to at least make fansubbers look like they made it out of middle school. (Yes, it’s hard.)

Hatsuyuki looks like your best bet for this show. But if you want it fast, you’d probably be better off just grabbing the HorribleSubs release when it comes out than waiting for this. Or, you know, actually watch it on Crunchyroll.

    • Oh, I’ll just summarize it for ya. [filler text so people reading recent comments don’t get spoiled if they don’t want to]

      Spoiler for
      Okay, so this chick has amnesia. The reason for it differs depending on which route she’s on. Physical trauma, mental trauma, or spiritual guidance (true route) are all the reasons for it.

      Anyway, right now in the anime they’re cycling through routes and shit, and we’re getting all the bad ends. When she wakes up in the morning, she’s shifted to another world (multiple world theory), although it’s more accurate to say she retains some memories of the previous worlds. If she remembered them all she’d go insane, so the amnesia kinda helps (I’m riffing on this based on the game/anime, but I think I’m right).

      Okay, let’s make this less tl;dr: These characters are completely fucked. Toma (blond haired guy) actually keeps this bitch in a fucking cage in his route. Green-haired guy tries to simultaneously kill/save her (he’s gone insane after trying to save her for so many fucking years now). And you already got this from Shin, but he’s basically a rapist. The goal in the true route is to save her from her fate of dying at the end of each August. Those bitchy girls, BTW? Yeah, they come up with plots to kill her in every arc or so.

      Shit’s like a badly paced Higurashi.

      I’d recommend just reading my description, thinking “oh that’s cool”, and running the fuck away from the show cuz I doubt it can get good.

        So she’s basically loading savegames all the time. If it’s just a little like Higurashi, I’ll sit through it. Have watched worse stuff than this and maybe, if Kami-sama desires so, it will actually turn out good

      • How could Japan possibly fuck up a show that contains this much

        Spoiler for
        death, violence, and rape

        ? It’s difficult to fathom. Well, I can think of two reasons:

  1. 1.The line where Shin said he was taking advantage of being her boyfriend isn’t exactly wrong. If you weren’t so hateful towards Amnesia, (not that I blame you) you’d know he prefers to let her figure things out on her own. In the previous episode when he met with Toma, Toma asked him to tell this chick with amnesia everything she needs to know. Shin told him it’d be better if she remembered everything on her own. He didn’t want to spoon-feed her.
    2. “It’s impossible…” < Here, he’s talking about how she lost her memories and he has to act like he’s another random person and not her boyfriend. He can’t deal with it. Doesn't seem like an actual error. Could have been phrased better.
    3. I believe you’re mistaken with the semicolon error. A semicolon can used to draw attention to how similar two clauses are. “I already told you.” What did he tell her? “I’m studying for exams.” You could use a colon in its place as well. However, that’s just personal preference.
    http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/how-to-use-semicolons.aspx

    That's just a quick example to give evidence. I'm a bit busy at the moment.

    4. The “kick start” error I agree with. I believe words were added when it went through QC.
    5. Shinano Forest < An error. I agree.
    6. “For some reason, I felt like I needed rush things.” < An error. I agree. I don’t know how it got passed QC.
    7. “It took forever until we finally felt like we were dating.” This isn't being presumptuous. In the episode, you find out when he confessed to her, she turned him down because she felt awkward about dating a childhood friend. Plus, a normal person would definitely feel awkward if a childhood friend asked them out, especially if they saw them as a brother/sister. Just like in this story. The chick with amnesia saw him as a younger brother.
    8. The drunkard part was a mistake. I agree.
    9. Immediate response is not exactly wrong. It’s used when someone or something has a reaction instantly to whatever is happening. When Shin kicked the firework, Toma immediately turned around. Feels like you’re putting a lot of your preference in this review.
    10. The Em dash lines, well, we all know she speaks in parts because she’s stupid, literally, words at a time. Best way is to Em dash it. We don’t control what she says. Blame the script writer or TL or whatever makes you happy.
    11. The “I’ll be in front of your house in in thirty minutes.” I don’t understand how that passed QC.

    “Beyond these highlights, there’s a lot wrong on the back end of the script.”

    I feel like you’re adding too much of your personal preference into this particular review. Not sure if it’s because you hate the show (I’m not a fan of it, either.) Plus, the C script grade doesn't sit right with me since I didn't get to see every "error" that made it a C.

    Reply
    • This is the last time I let Hybrid21 look at the script after I have. At least 3 of those errors weren’t there when I looked at it. I should have known better.

      Reply
    • 1. I don’t really see what you’re arguing for. The issue is the phrase “take advantage of”.

      2. “I’m aware that your loss of memory isn’t your fault, but it’s impossible.” is gibberish. It’s nonspecific garbage that relies on the viewer having to fill in the blanks because you can’t do it yourself. There’s a point where being faithful to the Japanese script impedes your ability to reach the viewers and this is it.

      3. I don’t think they’re closely connected enough. You can’t use a conjunction in between them, and it’s that conjunction the semicolon is supposed to stand in for. Why wouldn’t you use an em-dash instead?

      7. In your script he’s presuming to know how she felt. It doesn’t seem accurate at all and it’s certainly not within the realm of what most scripts work with. The key part I had issue with is the “we felt”.

      9. Would a human really say that? It’s casual speak. Maybe I could see the cross-guy saying “Your immediate response was surprising”, but between two best buds? No. No no no.

      10. You should be taking a peek at how it looks on the screen rather than how it looks as text in Aegisub. You have to be aware of how the readers will interpret these things. But even if you had a good font with it, it’d still look bad.

      Heck, I was actually surprised when I got to that point. I’ve never seen another release that handled stutters like you did. It’s usually done with commas or ellipses, depending on how it fits the sentence.

      ~~~
      I do try to keep these things objective as possible, but there’s only so far I can go with just pointing out spelling and grammar mistakes. If I didn’t talk about scriptwriting and phrasing, these reviews would get dull very quickly and anything that passed spellcheck would get an A. But that’s not reality.
      If you really want the backend results, I’ll throw something together for you, but it’s not going to be pretty, and I’m not going to explain very much.
      I’m not against grade revision, so feel free to argue it up however much you want. Just be aware that I’m stubborn.
      • Sorry to rain on your parade but “that” would probably be the conjunction for the semi-colon line. I’m with you that it sounds awkward though – I’d personally chuck in a colon instead, but it’s not inherently *wrong* as such. I’d chuck in the semi-colon because the first phrase sounds fragmented even though it is a full stand-alone sentence. Can’t really mark them down on that though.
        Reply
        • I must apologise for my poor typing which would lead to confusion on the part of the reader – it should say “I’d chuck in a colon” not a semi-colon. You’re right insofar as a semi-colon just *feels* wrong there, but by the letter of the grammatical law, it is correct (just about).
      That’s just the first six and a half minutes. I could actually bitch about more within those, but I’d rather not.
      I can finish off the episode like that if you so desire.
      • I see where you’re coming from. Though, there is one or two errors that the QC added. As for the OP and ED, “What?” is exactly what I was saying. The opening and ending songs sound nice, but when translated, they don’t make much sense. I appreciate the list, and you don’t have to continue. I walked away from this knowing what I lacked.
  2. Why would you sub something if you won’t give two figs about the show anyway?
    Seriously, Hybrid sucks. I only remember one decent release from them that wasn’t a joint, and even that not from the first episode.
