Hey, folks! I’m typing this from D_S’s mancave, so this is kinda-sort of a commemorative post for me :3

ED. Mostly good, however here it’s supposed to be egao not negao.

Main Script.

Decided to leave the name of the beetle untranslated. It’s up to you whether that’s hot or not.

Wow, they are the only group that typesetted… more of the other shit that’s on the sheet. I’m impressed.

They actually say “nearly the end of August.” This line suggests that these events are taking place in September.

“They took off my outerwear before I knew it.”

“I have to go in.” Like I said in the DDY review, she wants to join her Onee-sama.

“Why don’t you just say you like me?” This is an important detail.

Forgot the Minami house sign.

“People say I can do it when I try!” You need to add that little detail because it actually sounds more pathetic than just saying “I can do it!”

They didn’t typeset Kana’s notebook page, even though it’s supposed to be hilarious. For example, Kana answered the second question from the top “Who opened the Shoka Sonjuku School and was victimized by the Ansei Purge?” by writing “Not me.”

Similarly, if they typesetted that previous notebook page, then they would know she was talking about all three answers.

“Don’t spoil Kana.”

“People say that I can get it done if I try, Fujioka.”

Not “innocent,” it’s “simple.” And as a wise person said, yes, there is a difference. Plus it’s much more insulting.

Aaand they decided to typeset the house sign here for some reason.

“When I followed what Fujioka said, I did it.”

“What if they had cool-looking boyfriends?”

Nope. It’s supposed to be “A man should be able to make important decisions.”

She ordered a “big steak set,” not a drink.

Other Observations

Chihiro not typesetting the name of the show because shut up, that’s why.

Useless, shitty effects in my subtitles.

That’s not how you italicize.

Final Grade: C

Huge part of that grade is the fact that they didn’t specify that the events were taking place in the latter part of August. Otherwise, the release has a scattering of stupid-ass mistakes which renders it into simply a passable script.

Akatsukin says:

Honestly, I think most people associate summer in that context with “summer vacation”. Not a huge problem or misunderstanding type thing in my book.

kokujin-kun says:

That’s true, except they actually did say “August” in that line, so that adaptation, if you can call it that, wasn’t even needed

Etoce says:

Most people don’t wistfully talk about the end of “August”, though. It’s always the end of summer, by which they mean going back to school. As a side note, I’ve always thought of summer as June-August, autumn as September-November, etc., even though I know that’s not technically right.

You could make the argument that if they had it as “end of August”, the uneducated viewer, not knowing when Japanese summer vacations ended, would think to themselves “So does that mean they’re almost done with summer vacation? Are they halfway through?” whereas their version provides that information.

kokujin-kun says:

One, she wasn’t even talking about summer vacation or school, she was talking about the weather.

Two, she was actually saying a pretty specific time period while Chihiro’s subs had her say a less specific time period. In those cases, it’s better to stick with specifics in order to avoid muddying up the plot. Maybe you trust viewers to think that summer ends in August, but in this neck of the woods I’m about to die of heat stroke even though it’s well past Labor Day.

Etoce says:

Oh, I didn’t actually see the episode so I assumed she was talking about summer vacation. Never mind then.

Nice one.

Hybrid21 says:

Think you can do better? Be my guest.

Risq says:

I guess the sole purpose of this post was to strip Chihiro of their precious downloads?

Also, someone in Commie/Vivid also does “shitty effects” like that [personally I love them], so that’s probably theft as well.

anononon says:

wait…. chihiro is still alive ?!?!?!

Switches says:

Hmm… kind of dissapointed they didn’t take better care of the signs… then again, I never translate signs. xD
