If you ignore that there’s basically no typesetting, it’s a pretty good release. Too bad there are a ton of signs that needed to be typeset in this episode.

Release format: MKV (233 MB, 10-bit)

Japanesiness: Honorifics.

I wouldn’t fucking know, now would I, GX_ST?

In GX_ST’s defense, I’m sure the reason they didn’t typeset any of this shit is because their typesetter is too incompetent to handle it. I mean, look at the “infirmary” sign as a prime example of this. Thanks for sparing our eyes.

Script.

TL Note example. I’m not gonna mark it against them, but I find this to be a very silly TL Note to have.

Honorifics example.

“Lack of understanding as to what a question mark is” example.

Line differentiation example.

Another fine example of GX_ST not knowing what a question mark is.

Watchability: Watchable.

Overall grade: B

Due to the lack of typesetting, I’m not gonna be able to recommend GX_ST for this show at all. If I were a GX_ST viewer, I’d have missed way too much shit in their releases to get a perfect idea of what’s going on in the show. I think Asenshi is a better choice overall.

  1. I don’t think a dash should be included since it’s a nickname. There’s a character called Kobasen in Ueki no Housoku; he’s a teacher. Also, I don’t think -sen is an honorific.

I don’t even watch this show so whatever. (^=.=^)

  2. No no, it should be Saya-chan Sensei, right? It’s like saying Miss Saya, only the japanese term for Miss, Mr, or Mrs is Sensei.

      • Er, that’s precisely the point, to sound retarded. It’s the same in K-On! with Yui calling Sawako Sawa-chan-sensei. It’s deliberately ridiculous and the joke is lost in localization.

    • Also that’s not even what “sensei” means. If nothing else this is making an excellent case for why you shouldn’t leave words like that untranslated.

    • Considering that these guys release after WhyNot, Commie, AsukaSubs (lol) and Asenshi, and all four of those groups at least attempt to typeset everything to varying degrees of success, I’m not sure the whole “we don’t typeset anything because it’s a speedsub!!” excuse really works here. For example, they released episode 3 a full two days after the show initially aired, I would think that’s more than enough time to get some typesetting done.

You could probably make a case for the second ‘missing question mark’ not actually being necessary (though I’m not 100% convinced and it would look better with it there either way) but the first one is definitely a mistake.

      • GX_ST’s typical modus operandi is speedsub quality at slowsub speed. :) They’ll take two weeks to release, but translate sloppy and carelessly and don’t have a single person look over the script once it’s done. Bizarre.
