Opening. Spot-on colors, sensible font, and clever choices combine for a quality offering. The rainbow bits were super sugoi.
While most of the lines are good to go, the kara would be a lot better if they took readability into account for all of them.
My bad there. That second image only appears if you skip around the karaoke. Score updated to reflect what the average viewer will experience.
Didn’t know half these signs existed until I demuxed the script and went looking to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Chyuu was impressively thorough.
Sorry guys. You’re right, I’ve been acting kind of childish lately. Time to go back to the glory days, back when I was deep and serious and mature. Time for Detective_Sage to make a comeback!
This week on Fansub Mysteries: The Case of the Confusing Chyuu.
Chyuu replaced some of the l’s in their script with capital i’s. But only some. (Capital i bolded in the following dialogue.)
Dialogue: 10,0:02:47.64,0:02:51.73,Main,,0,0,0,,U-Um, ghouIs should hide themselves from the rest of the world, right?
Strangely, rather than being a case of the two characters displaying differently, they appear exactly the same in the release.
But before you determine it’s cuz of a collision issue, this is how “ghouls” looks in both cases:
Yup. Something this unnecessarily stupid can only be the work of one person:
Ha! I knew it! But, hey… Hold on a minute… It can’t be RedHerring — they’ve been offline since 2009.
So if it’s not RedHerring, then who is it?
~The Big Reveal~
Old Man Nyaa?! But why’d ya do it?
<~Nyaa> I knew you’d demux that script and find me with the clues I’d hidden. You’re the only one I’ve ever wanted, D_S-senpai-kun. Why won’t you recognize my love?
<Dark_Sage> But why male models?
Welp, looks like we caught the perp, guys. That’s one more fansub mystery solved, thanks to the power of good detectiving and friendship.
Next week on fansub mysteries, we examine why people who apparently hate this site can’t stop visiting it. Are they really that tsundere or is there something fundamentally wrong with them? Rest assured; this detective’s on the case!
The sleeping city is slowly rising
And the city plan is being enacted
Trains are like morphed snakes
Fuel your brain and go, go, go
Souls rise into the night sky
Progress and faith all seem to be a quiz
Seem to be a quiz
Seem to be a quiz
The still-empty tomorrow
is looking like the darkest of grays
In order to not get used to the something that
is looking like the darkest of grays
Oh, tonight I want you, Saints
Oh, I want you to bring it to an end, Saints
The ED karaoke may as well be a foster home with how broken it is. Back to the drawing board, please.
I’d normally be inclined to mark this as a mistake due to redudancy (“whatcha-ma-call-it” and “thing”), but I think in this context the addition of “thing” actually makes the line better. The speaking character is a jackass, and the smarmy phrasing matches his personality.
So even if it wasn’t intentional, good job, Chyuu.
“regular meeting” sounds dumb. Seems like a status meeting, so call it a status meeting.
I have to believe these subs are a parody of American cinema… and not a very good one.
Generally, lines in a conversation are supposed to relate to each other. …cuz that’s how conversation works.
Change “You can’t even do anything!” to “Do I have to explain everything to you?!”
Try to be a bit more commsistent.
“S-rated ghoul, Glutton, from the 20th ward.” (Hate the guy who invented grammar, not me.)
“That is the sole task we must focus our efforts on!”
What exactly is hard to understand about “do not hire ESLs to edit your releases”?
“What did the manager mean by ‘food supplies’, anyway?”
It’s actually “If you’d like”. You might hear people drop the ‘d in informal conversation, but if you really wanted to turn the subs into a dub script, they’d be unreadable.
This line is like that “My Generation” song that Green Day wrote: awful.
those of your own generation -> those your own age
It must be difficulty to edit without having ever read a book before.
Visual grade: A+
Script grade: B-
Overall grade: B
The script as a whole was pretty competent, but a few stand-out issues with the English really hurt the overall product. Still, I don’t have much of a problem recommending this. Just depends on whether I’d recommend it over the yet-to-be-reviewed releases.

capital I/lowercase L is because Ryuk’s a doodoo and he uses OCR to rip scripts (I guess the official release is hardsubbed).
You saw this that time he somehow convinced you to QC Inari Konkon and there were ‘lnari’s all over the place.
>Yeah, it’s a bit of a long story.
>A long story? What kinda story?
>A long one.
Dissapointed in you, Chyuu.
And it’s weird that they just decided to show how the “i”s and “L”s display with that font in their subs, why would they do that? At least make a TL note or something if you’re going to do that. I can’t believe you allowed this D_S, dissapointed in you too, for shame.
>“S-rated ghoul, Glutton, from the 20th ward.”
I added that error in myself after changing it about 4+ times to fit the dialogue.
>Ending. While most of the lines are good to go, the kara would be a lot better if they took readability into account for all of them.
Forgot to change the color on this because of them switching the ED around from a black background like before with the slideshow.
I blame Ryuk for any of these as he uses OCR to rip. I also blame Ryuk for the last error. ( ¬‿¬)
>This line is like that “My Generation” song that Green Day wrote: awful.
You’re clearly from the wrong generation. I actually didn’t even know Green Day covered that song, but it’s a classic (Dark_Sage’s shit taste confirmed yet again?)
> “Those guys who get more attention from older ladies than from those of your own generation.”
So, were they doing that whole “You’re not one of those guys, are you?” > “What guys?” thing? Because otherwise, this sentence seems to be at least a double amputee.
You’re one of those, you know… Those guys who get more attention from older ladies than from those of your own generation.
That was the full line. It could’ve been worded a lot better though.
Fair enough. I just didn’t have the full context, then.
Thanks for filling me in.
Yes only l can be that stupid.
The ending’s top and bottom should be masked so the lyrics don’t clash with the video. http://i.imgur.com/bJIn31o.jpg
I’m guessing you skipped around in the video.
Also, why you gotta be so baised D_S? ( ¬‿¬)
Just checked and you’re right. Mea culpa. Review updated.
That’s weird, the ending doesn’t look like that when you go into fullscreen on MPC, were you not in fullscreen when doing the review?
I just checked myself and it doesn’t matter if it’s full screen or not.
Are you that Nigger guy?
Maybe he doesn’t have keep aspect ratio and isn’t on a 16:9 screen(like the other 0.00000001%).
Probably, I messed around with the options and could not make it look like the screenshot that Ryuk posted, his screenshot is pretty weird in resolution too.
Neither could I….all looked like D_S’s post…I think ryuk meant that that is what it should be like but he fcked up?
No, what Ryuk meant is that his screenshot is what it should look like, but because D_S seeked to the middle of the line, the splitter did not pass the two mask subtitles to xy-VSFilter, so it ends up looking like what D_S has.
And I have no idea what Danuchiha99 is doing.
Yeah, when are they going to fix that? I imagine it could cause a few problems when you’re chaptering too if the chapter comes in *after* the mask has already started.
actually, u just adjust the chapter by fractions of a second. but yeah it’s annoying. not sure if there is anything that can realistically be done about it in terms of skipping around videos.
Lol… I just saw that if you just don’t skip to the ending and watch the whole episode or skip to the part before the ending, then that problem wouldn’t happen…
Well, that’s because it wasn’t fullscreen in MPC. I just did a capture area on puush, then realized that I don’t keep my pictures on puush for that long, so I put it on Imgur. The Case of the Confusing Ryuk.
Press [1!] in your keyboard and then use the puush Capture Current Window (It’s usually Ctrl+Shift+[[email protected]]. This is the way I do capture now for quick sharing. Pressing [1!] will put your MPC into minimal mode which is basically the video without the player panels.
I’m not saying I love how you handled that correction, but I’d marry you if you were an anime onee-san. Fix’d.
“Visual grade: A+” – D_S
It’s rare to see this high.
what was the last time you put A+ on your review?
probably too high considering overall is a B :P
A+ visual grades shouldn’t be too rare. All you have to do to hit it is provide “Good” or above karaoke alongside typesetting a significant amount of signs, including those which no sane group would bother with.
An A+ script… now that’s gonna be rare.
Visual grade A+?
May be A but definitely not A+
Apparently Chyuu encode is a bit blurry than Hatsuyuki. Look at the leaves behind the windows.
Visual Grade in a D_S review is weighted mostly on subtitles-related visuals, like TS, dialogue and karaoke.
D_S can’t into encodes outside of things that are blatantly off, last time I checked, so you won’t usually hear about it unless it’s fucking awful.
He can’t into TSing either but we still get a grade for that.
Because fuck you.
Well, he doesn’t grade the TSing in detail, just what stands out or not to him as a viewer.
And yes, while their TS isn’t totally perfect, as an active TSer myself, I’ve got no major complaints, the grade is a pretty accurate measure.
There are slight improvements to be made in certain signs, but for the most part, it’s well executed and not at all obnoxious. If the Chyuu TSer is curious, he can poke me about it, but otherwise, know that you’ve done a solid job.
I must admit, I spent at least 30 second moving my mouse on and off the image, to watch his mouth open and close.
You know you did the same thing.
you should have added “no homo”.
Chyuu’s encode is way worst than DameDesutos, though I like more Chyuu’s sub.
Screen comparison of the 6 episode SPOILERS: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/86980
When there is too much movement Chyuu’s release looks way pixelated.
They are both fucking terrible.
When you watch it at normal speed DameDesuyo’s doesn’t look that bad, it’s acceptable.
Both groups use Tokyo MX for this show, a station known for butchering the living hell out of anything they air — terrible encodes during action scenes are unavoidable.
Hf with the ghosting.
Can’t be helped when it comes from Tokyo MX, but DDY does look a lot better.
While I’m at it, watching it at normal speed is nowhere near that bad, but I guess that’s what you get for pausing the video to screenshot compare.
Chyuu’s or DameDesuyo’s?
Chyuu’s. The same can be said for DDY as well.
The fight at the church of the episode 6 at normal speed from Chyuu’s looks awful.
Not really. Didn’t seem as bad as you say it is.
Yes, because blurring the picture to hell and back is so much better.
