Opening.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_03.54_[2016.04.15_12.00.11]

Rating: Sure is something when the only one you can count on to even halfway translate anime is Japan.

Ending.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_23.33_[2016.04.17_11.44.10]

Rating: Funi, I can’t read this shit. At least give us a clean version so your incompetency doesn’t sting as much.

Typesetting.

Sure, you’d have gotten the point in just two screenshots, but then it’d invalidate the insignificant amount of time I spent on getting all these.

Script Review

Spoiler:

Main Script.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_02.06_[2016.04.15_09.39.09] [HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_02.11_[2016.04.15_09.39.19]

might be*

getting bullied*

Let’s not mince words. This kid’s had his shit kicked in so much he’s basically a metaphor for redditors.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_04.36_[2016.04.15_12.01.49]

What? No they aren’t. Katsuki spent his entire childhood beating the shit out of that 8-dimpled recessive. Take a second to read your fucking source material.

“Hey, Katsuki, don’t you and Midoriya go way back?” <- Even this is pushing it, but at least it isn’t factually incorrect.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_04.45_[2016.04.15_12.02.20]

I could see “trying to get in my way” because then it’s just growly eyes’s opinion. But nothing about Midoriya’s stated desire to get into the same school as Katsuki would qualify the statement (as written) as accurate.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.11_[2016.04.17_11.19.17]

While not being an error, this line has enough commas to give any literate pause, so I’d suggest dropping one for readability.

“You’ll come too, right, Katsuki?”

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.30_[2016.04.15_12.03.18]

“invisible cloak”? If a term doesn’t really translate into English, then you’d better have a good reason for keeping it gibberish. This does not have one.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.43_[2016.04.15_12.03.50]

“Y-Y-You deflated…!”

Much like my hopes for the rest of the episode.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.17_[2016.04.15_12.06.36] [HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.21_[2016.04.15_12.06.46]

If “fearless smile” was said in Japanese, then why the fuck wasn’t it said in English, Funi?

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_07.29_[2016.04.17_11.21.43]

Literally what the fuck is this supposed to mean?

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_07.59_[2016.04.15_12.09.49] [HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_08.03_[2016.04.15_12.09.57]

Also your editor needs to learn how to write.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_08.50_[2016.04.15_12.13.06]

What (in this context) = Unknown, or presumed unknown

Which (in this context) = Known, or presumed known

Kid knows most of the heroes in town due to his creepy understandable latex fetish, so this needs a rewrite.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_10.24_[2016.04.15_12.16.09]

With this:

  • Quirk, I can get revenge on that bastard{guy}!
  • power, I can get revenge on that bastard{guy}!

Redundancy is bad because redundancy is bad.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_10.30_[2016.04.15_12.16.19]

Whoa*

We’re not animals here.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_11.22_[2016.04.17_11.31.03]

You can’t really “hold back” damage. But you can “contain” it. Sorta like how I wish the editor was contained in that fire.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_12.38_[2016.04.15_12.19.00] [HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_12.40_[2016.04.15_12.19.09]

As if you needed any more evidence that this translation was outsourced.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_12.48_[2016.04.15_12.19.22]

“You were averting your eyes from the truth.”

Much like I had to if I wanted to get through this episode without laying train tracks on my arms.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_14.26_[2016.04.15_12.21.25]

More like “hang in there”. The whole point is the kid can only struggle in vain, trying to hold out for someone else to come and save him. Outside of a narrow interpretation, the current line doesn’t serve that point.

[HorribleSubs] Boku no Hero Academia - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_19.41_[2016.04.17_11.39.57]

Two sentences is pushing it harder than I want to push the editor off a building.

Watchability: Watchable.

Overall grade: Pass.

While sometimes inaccurate and often poorly written, the script is not going to inhibit your understanding of the show, which is about the best you can hope for from Funimation’s professional translation team™ these days. So yeah, it gets a pass.

As far as Academia goes, it’s awful. But the boorus have informed me it’s got a yandere, so I’m in it until the reality hits.

  1. “If “fearless smile” was said in Japanese, then why the fuck wasn’t it said in English, Funi?”

What did you mean by this?

    Reply
    • “A fearless smile, huh?” <- All Might's "quoting" Midoriya here. That means the line had to be said by Midoriya earlier in order for the quote to make sense. However, if you go back to the line Midoriya actually said, he never talked about a “fearless smile”, just how All Might is “fearless” and “saves everyone with a smile”.

    • Absolutely not. To call Academia generic would be an insult to the word.

The pacing is shit, and the characters are detestable. There’s not one new idea in the entire soulless endeavor, and the reaction faces aren’t even good. Fail, on all fronts.
