Realize that gg was only ever popular because they released fast and consistently. And that’s it. So stop flipping your shit over gg’s “grand return”. Wake me when GotWoot comes back instead.

That being said, I do respect jaka for all he’s done for the scene. So I’m glad to see he’s still getting shit done. <3

Visual Review

Macross_Delta_01

Spoiler for

Encode.

If you wanna know what a concussion feels like, watch this release:

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_05.03_[2016.04.11_21.10.11]

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_18.19_[2016.04.11_21.35.08]

Now, I’m not gonna say the RAW quality is gg’s fault, but I am gonna point out that poison is poison, no matter who put it there.

Karaoke.

Insert.

Rating: Bad.

Opening.

Rating: Bad.

Ending.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_23.05_[2016.04.11_20.34.10]

Rating: Bad.

I see no significant difference between gg’s efforts on Macross and Funimation’s on every show they’ve done. I’d be a hypocrite to praise gg here for their quality visuals, and a liar too.

At least Funi has the excuse of ignorance.

Typesetting.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_22.05_[2016.04.11_21.40.03]

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_07.49_[2016.04.11_21.17.09]

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_23.37_[2016.04.11_21.08.09]

Relying on typesetters whose skills were considered antiquated when the DVD was first introduced is not a strategy for impressing the visually unimpaired.

Script Review

Macross_Delta_02

Spoiler for

Karaoke.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_02.09_[2016.04.12_19.30.03] [gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_02.11_[2016.04.12_19.30.19]

Macross has always been gibberish. I ain’t touching this shit.

Main Script.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_01.22_[2016.04.11_21.53.12]

I take it that’s a call sign from a culture uncorrupted by simpering simpletons. Capitalize the full name — “White Knight”.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_17.14_[2016.04.11_22.02.51]

What, again? Barrette City***

gg seems to have this weird belief throughout the release that proper nouns spread across two words only require the first word to be capitalized. While I will cut them slack in most situations out of respect for stylistic differences, things like names of cities don’t have a lot of wiggle room.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_05.16_[2016.04.11_21.49.44]

Were you touched by Uncle English as a kid? Did Sean Connery’s accent watch?

Normally I’m against victim blaming, but when there is a spellcheck function literally built into Aegisub… Well, maybe it’s time to explore more permanent ways of preventing the cycle of abuse from continuing.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_05.20_[2016.04.11_21.11.19] [gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_05.21_[2016.04.11_21.11.25]

“We’re looking forward to seeing you”//”on Ragna!”

This is basic shit, so you’d think these basic bitches could at least get that right. If this is what happens when a group recovers from a coma, perhaps we should start pulling plugs more often.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_05.36_[2016.04.11_21.14.10]

You give me this sing along bullshit but neglect the karaoke? Not on my measured watch.

“I sang alongside them” or “I sang along with them”

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_06.08_[2016.04.12_19.23.04] [gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_06.11_[2016.04.12_19.23.09]

“Just doing my duty.”

Someone on script duty really likes short lines. I get that. Nothing wrong with a tight script in theory. But ya need to give some breathing room to the dialogue so you don’t lose the point. This includes using common turns-of-phrase when it may not be 100% necessary otherwise.

Don’t keep trying to reinvent the wheel. Often it’ll fall as flat as a fansubber’s personality.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_09.34_[2016.04.12_19.22.17]

I can deal with possessives only so long as they’re yanderes. This needs a rephrase almost as much as someone at gg needs an education.

“That’s the HQ of Chaos’ Ragna branch: the Macross Elysion.” (By the way, it can be Chaos’ or Chaos’s depending on personal preference. Just gotta be consistent about it. Can’t help but love these English ~standards~)

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_09.43_[2016.04.11_21.19.38]

High? Wait, you don’t mean hot, do you? Oh my god, you mean hot, don’t you? Fucking sperg goblins.

As an aside (because I know you come here for the dank disses), gg sort of had the right idea here. “running high” is indeed an idiom, but it must be attached to the word “feelings”.

“feelings are running high” = good

“<other subjects> are running high” = not good (especially if the subject is “runners”)

Sorry editor-kun, but Crymore ain’t like that “nontraditional school” you dropped out of — you don’t get points for almost not failing.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_09.59_[2016.04.11_21.21.11]

This ain’t Japan, pal-tachi. Here we have pluralization.

[gg]_Macross_Delta_-_02_[EA738580].mkv_snapshot_15.45_[2016.04.12_19.21.23]

The fuck else would you use them for?

Watchability: Watchable.

Visual grade: Objectively, this is an F. The visuals are more corrupted than the UK Parliament. But I’ve been down this route before and it’s not worth retreading the same old arguments, so I’ll ignore the eye blight and hand gg the D+ they otherwise earned. Toll the victory bells.

Script grade: C (There are 300 lines of dialogue, with an average of 5 words per sentence. Don’t tell me this was a hard script.)

Overall grade: C-

The visuals are bad enough that I’d gladly pick a somehow-more ESL alternative over this, so long as it didn’t look like an upscaled workraw from a decade ago. Again, gg doesn’t deserve full blame for it, but I sure as fuck ain’t gonna go the other way and suck their dicks like a trained dog. There’s enough peanut butter addicts over on Nyaa to fulfill that needless quota.

So yeah, since it comes to take it or leave it, I’ll take it. I just wish the show was worth the migraine. Maybe I should just rewatch Frontier.

  1. Personally, I feel like on a show which has a main theme of songs (Macross, Aikatsu, Love Live, K-On, for instance), there should always be karaoke. Like, full on flashy effects for all songs. Many people may disagree with me, and that’s their prerogative. But, it just feels off to me when a show is essentially a musical and is missing that.

  2. Still makes me smile that gg drop the F-bomb for rough speech. Their subs remind me of those Manga Entertainment dubs from the early 90s. Anyone else remember ME’s Cybercity Oedo 808? gg would have scripted that show the same way.

  3. Will you be doing the Doki-Chihiro release for this as well or not? Frm screenshots visually theirs looks much better and normally Chihiro have nice typesetting plus OPs and EDs, so would assume that will be the better release (unless they messed up the script).
